They don't need it, but it will severely hurt their sales.
Well, your precious Xbox Live already turned me off with all its useless features. It's like a cellphone. All I want a cellphone for is to call people. I don't want games, text messages, e-mail, AIM, etc. I want a phone. I don't want a gaming console with Internet browsing, chat, e-mail, etc. I HAVE A COMPUTER.
That's why Nintendo knows how to play the game and why I will support them in 2006 with my 6AM purchase of a Nintendo Revolution and the best game at the opening release. I can only hope it's SSB3.
In a way, the lack of an unified online system for the PS3 is a parallel to the Gamecube not having much online play in the sense that it's lacking something that gamers want very much. This will likely hurt the chances of people rushing to get a PS3, considering they could have an XBOX 360 or a Revolution with online play that the PS3 lacks.
Look at how well XBOX Live did. It's obvious that online play is hugely important to gamers of all types.
Of course. But we're talking about a unified online system here. It's already known that PS3 will obviously have online games.
Peronsally, though I guess Xbox LIVE will seem more attractive, it really shouldn't cripple Sony. Look at PC games. Completely forgetting about Steam (and Gamespy, which I had for a while), all of my PC games that have online multiplayer are not combined under one sytem. RTCW: Enemy Territory has it's own thingy. UT2K4 has it's own thingy. C&C: Red Alert 2 has it's own thingy. They're fine.
