    Initial D (Live Action)

So, earlier this morning I watched the Live Action version of Initial D. As you may, or may not know, Initial D was originally a Manga series which in turn was made into an Anime, and later a video game. The live action movie basically retells most of the major events in the series in a span of two hours.

Now, as you should be aware of, Initial D is a Japanese series. It takes place in Japan, uses Japanese cars, with Japanese people. So why is the movie a Chinese production? All the actors and actresses are Chinese, and they speak Chinese...yet the movie still takes place in Japan. I just dont get it.

Anyways, back to the movie itself. Basically, it wasnt very good. It didnt completely suck, because the racing scenes were still pretty cool, but everything else was...well, just terrible. Maybe it was the fact that I was watching the (Cantonese...or Mandarin, I cant tell the difference) dubbed version (there are two versions, one in Mandarin, and one in Cantonese, one is dubbed, the other isnt). Or maybe it was the fact that the subtitles were absolutely horrible (like...literally, half the time they made no sense).

The racing scenes were done really well, lots of action and intense camera angles and jazz. But the none racing scenes were just boring.

Brace yourselves for the worst part: the soundtrack was absolutely devoid of Eurobeat. Worse, it was all pretty much hip-hop...and in English too. Not that the soundtrack wasn't good, it's just...f*ck, it's Initial D, where's the Eurobeat?!

I'd give the movie 5 out of 10. 4 for the racing scenes, and a 1 for this scene:

Initial D movie has the hottest Hong Kong actors on the face of the planet.

Also, it's understandable that you thought the subtitles were shit. Alot of commonly used jokes/ expressions are next to IMMPOSSIBLE to translate, but since they have to sub all of the dialogue, it ends up making no sense.

Hey, I liked the movie, but that might be because I got to watch it in it's original form.

Ah! There he is. The guy on the right. Edison Chen. What kind of name is Edison? Doesn't sound very...Chinese...neither does Jordan. What the hell is going on? I thought all chinese people were named Liu Kang or Shang Tsung or something along those lines.

Yea, this is a common occurance when translating jokes. It's so common in fact that there's a term for it: "lost in translation."

I've seen FLCL subbed and the manga scene in episode one features a quick fire run between two characters with lots of jokes. Every single one of them only makes sense if you know some Japanese.

Also, there's Japanese in that picture HVAM posted. It says "edeison." Ha! I'm so cool.

PS about Americanized names for Chinese actors: They're just following Jackie Chan's lead.

No, unless you're suggesting my real name isn't Karen. I have two legal names. And so do they. Keep reading..

Edison Chen's chinese name is 陳冠希, pronounciation is soemthing like Chan Kwoon Hey (rofl I'm bad with pinyin)
Jordan Chan's chinese name is 陳小春, pronounciation is something like Chan Shiu Cheun (I think I go this pinyin right..)

And before someone asks. Yes they have the same last name, but no they aren't related. Chan is a ridiculously common last name in China. Hell, even Linus's last name is Chan.

Is Cheun chinese for Spring (the season)?

And I guess having two names isnt that uncommon. My Jewish friend has a western name and a jewish name. I only have one name...and it sucks.

Yes. 春 = Cheun = Spring. It's also the same cheun used in SPRING rolls. 'cheun gune' Gune means roll.
