I had the pleasure of watching this series over the past three days, and my word, was it a good one.
It's about a guy who's in grade 11 who for some reason, starts dating this chick he doesn't even know. He finds out a very big secret within the first 20 minutes of the first episode that changes their lives together forever. The first ten minutes would lead you to believe that this series is gonna be cheesy, but trust me, its ANYTHING but.
With a fairly large cast of characters who you get to know and relate to pretty quickly, the 13 episodes don't seem to go by too fast or too slow either.
The story doesn't have many plot twists, but the ones that are there definately work. The ending really took me by surprise, and not many movies/series do that.
This series really makes you think about some serious topics. I found myself thinking about my views on life during the breaks over the three days, this series has that big of an impact.
Saikano, first and foremost, is a love story. Underneath it though, lies a much bigger set of ideas and views on life, all of which seem very believable. I don't want to give away any of the plot, but to quote another viewer of this series:
"This is an AMAZING anime, very touching, sad, uplifting, and will change your views on life. If you aren't mentally affected by it you have no emotion within you and should seek help, and I am serious in saying that. It is not a joke."
I totally agree with this viewer. Saikano will make you look at your views on life, and could quite possibly change them. I know they changed mine, even if slightly.
Also, being a romantic at heart, this series I will say, is quite moving. If you're a big crying person, you're going to need a whole box of kleenex for this one. I teared up quite a few times, which isn't easy for me to do. I'd have to say this series hit close to home for me, at least a few times.
Overall, I'd have to say this is in my top three favourite series of all time. Everything that's going for it works. If you like romance or sci fi anime, or if you just like anime, watch this, you will not be dissapointed.
