Challenging someone in FFR requires you to know his or her name. Then you click the "Challenge" button and work it out from there.

To play Challenge mode, get any DDR Max or Extreme (except Max2 USA), and press right a bunch of times in the difficulty menu (in Extreme USA, choose it from the song select)

To play Challenging mode, get DDR 4th (3rd?) mix Japan or either of the DDR Ultramixes and choose "Challenging mode" from the main menu. There's also a similar "mission mode" in DDR Extreme, which is unlocked once you play enough songs.

To play the Challenge difficulty, unlock songs that have that difficulty. Song songs have all songs except Challenge, Some songs have all difficulties, some songs (remixes) have only Challenge difficulty.
