I personally would like to know. What do you think? For me, It's Underworld. I love Vampire movies and I think Underworld is the best one.

RE: What
See, your topic is wrong. The greatest movie of all time is NOT the same as your favorite movie of all time. There already was a thread about favorite movie.
You said greatest movie. And I'm willing to bet NO ONE would pick any of those 3 movies as the greatest of all time.
In terms of what it did for history, movies like The Wizard of Oz or Citizen Kane are good choices for being the 1st color movie and for completely new concepts in sound and video techniques, respectively.
In terms of classics, plot, acting, and script... Godfather is hardpressed to be beaten with directing by Coppola, and acting by Brando, Pacino, Caan, Duval, etc.
If you want to talk strictly about awards, LotR: RotK would be the best, with the most Oscars, 12.
Other great great classics: Casablanca, Schindler's List, Shawshank Redemption, and a select other few. North by Northwest perhaps.
BeethovenVirus, I'm happy to see you becoming an avid poster here at FFR, but please try and give support for your beliefs. In another thread you said something to the effect of "so-and-so is a great director." and that was your entire post. Give reasons and facts for your beliefs, or you won't be taken seriously.RIPComment

RE: What
Well we can have personal opinions or be Movie Snobs... I saw we be movie snobs
Go Look at the AFI (American Film Institute's) list of the top 100 movies of all time
They say Citizen Kane is 1.
I would disagree personally, and probably go with Casablanca or The Godfather.
Casablanca probably I would say has higher replay value though, so that's why I would give it the nod.
Btw, if I remember they have Casablanca 2nd and Godfather 5th

Re: RE: What
It was brilliant for its time...but now that we know that space looks nothing like what it does in that movie...and that film was made mostly for the sole reason so that they could use special effects that were new at the time, I don't think it belongs in the "best movie of all time" catagory.Originally posted by djshoxI'm surprised you didn't mention 2001: A Space Odyssey. Quite brilliant, both the book and movie.
Things like Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, and The Africa Queen are all movies that could be called the "best movies of all time."\"All the world is the birthday cake, so take a piece, but not too much.\"

RE: Re: RE: What
Citizen Kane, and here's why.
Although it wasn't exactly doing anything "new" in filming at the time, Orson Welles (director/actor) was under heavy scruteny at the time from RKO to shut down the production due to a smear campaign from tabloid owner William Randolph Hearst (the character Citizen Kane is almost identical to Hearst), but refused to sell his production. As such, he ended up creating a movie that was his own vision as opposed to the studio's normal controlling nature over directors.
Another thing was that Welles had no formal directing or technical experience in the film industry, he was originally a theatre/radio host. So it's even MORE impressive that he created such a masterpiece with such little knowledge of production.
Third, he performs brilliantly and utilizes many film styles in Citizen Kane. Film Noir lighting, German Expressionism, a flawless use of flashbacks and camera angles, and runs character development so expertly one would hardly notice.
While developing the character Kane in the movie, he never really gives away who he is, so in the end of hte movie you're not sure about the question of the movie: Who is Charles Montgomery Kane?
There are many other things I could get into, but won't for now. But it's easily the best movie ever.

The overall best comedy movie was Ferris Buelers Day Off (sp?) funny as hell. Not the funniest movie but probably most popular. My favorite is American wedding. That was so ungodly funny. I died laughing.Comment

Re: RE: What
I can't believe you're actually saying this.Originally posted by ayanepuckIt was brilliant for its time...but now that we know that space looks nothing like what it does in that movie...and that film was made mostly for the sole reason so that they could use special effects that were new at the timeOriginally posted by djshoxI'm surprised you didn't mention 2001: A Space Odyssey. Quite brilliant, both the book and movie.
1) The actual motion of celestial objects has NEVER been depicted more accurately in cinema than in 2001. Things in space do not rocket around making wailing TIE fighter noises as they swing from side to side. Things in space move very slowly, deliberately, and carefully, in meticulously calculated paths. Kubrick, in a revolutionary stroke of brilliance, decided to place these objects against the musical backdrop of The Blue Danube Waltz, suggesting that they were but elegant dancers in a cosmic ballet. It's a shame today's TIE fighter moviegoers are failing to recognize this. (P.S. there is no such thing as noise in space)
2) With the exception of the monolith, there are no mistakes in 2001 that I recall. Everything - from the simulated gravity in the Discovery to the gravity boots on the moon shuttle - is astrophysically correct. Did you even notice the sign on the shuttle about how to operate the zero-gravity toilet?
3) On that note, did you even read the book by Arthur C. Clarke, generally regarded as one of science fiction's all-time greatest authors, which prompted the creation of this movie? Are you unaware that the film's director, Stanley Kubrick, is also hailed as one of the finest directors in cinematic history? Do the titles A Clockwork Orange or Full Metal Jacket ring any bells?
While 2001 is not the best film of all time, it's hardly a special effects blockbuster that was made to win a box office weekend before people realized it sucked.
Taken as a whole, The Lord Of The Rings is my favorite movie of all time. I do not know if it could be considered the best movie of all time, though. There are so many great movies I've never seen. Citizen Kane, for one. I've never seen The Godfather, either, or Casablanca.
The best comedy of all time is The Blues Brothers. This is beyond debate. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is wonderfully funny, but as a movie it's not particularly great - it's essentially a long collection of sketches based on a common theme. The Blues Brothers is both wonderfully funny, a great movie, and plain enjoyable to watch.Comment

The movie was excellent. The end. Re: RE: What
There was a hella long scene where you travel through space and it is nothing but colors for about twenty minutes!!! Today's screensavers were that movie's special effects. Plus, I think that Sci-Fci movies have no business being in the "best film of all time" catagory. When that movie was over, I felt nothing. It didn't make me want to fall in love, it didn't make me want to be the person in the film....I wasn't inspired to do anything.Originally posted by chardishI can't believe you're actually saying this.Originally posted by ayanepuckIt was brilliant for its time...but now that we know that space looks nothing like what it does in that movie...and that film was made mostly for the sole reason so that they could use special effects that were new at the timeOriginally posted by djshoxI'm surprised you didn't mention 2001: A Space Odyssey. I love Kubrick, I think he is great, and I love the fact that he takes 5-6 years to put out of a movie because of all the research behind it. And I did love this movie....I love all his movies...but I will stand by my decision that this film does not deserve to be in this catagory.
I dunno...I would have to say Animal House. Ferris Beuller is funny....but it came out in the age of the VCR. Animal House was pre-VCR era. So it is probably more popular.Originally posted by babybenji2004The overall best comedy movie was Ferris Buelers Day Off (sp?) funny as hell. Not the funniest movie but probably most popular. First off..BlahBlah..LOTR:RotK has 11 awards..tied with Titanic and Ben-Hur.
Secondly, The Matrix is up on the list of greast movies of all times, Here's why. The Storyline of this movie is one of very orignal, How human needs for making things simple with technology leads to a massive power struggle for life between the humans and the robots they created. Next, the special effects, no one until then had used these special effects, the creators invented them for this movie. The Bullet Time, the way the agents and Neo moved, the running on walls, and the punching through walls changed the entertainment industry(sorry, the last two have been used but not anywhere close as well as they were put to use in The Matrix). Bullet time not only changed Movies but video games and even music videos. Movies like The Net and the last James bond took it to try to be good, and Kung pow parodied it..i think Shrek did too.The music video for Freak on a leash by Korn was all in bullet time(awesome video btw). Both Max Paynes and a few others ued Bullet time to make Game play "better" which lead to full slow motion in games like Viewtiful Joe and Prince of Persia. The acting is pretty good, not legendary by any ,means though. Keanhu Reeves is good, Lawrence Fishburn is amazing, and the Chick who played Trinity is also amazing(and hot). The sequels to this movie sucked though..well 2 was alright, 3 sucked. And with this i say The Matrix is defenently deserving of credit as a great movie.Peace&Love ....Pacifism is keyComment
