Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway. I understand that theoretically you could park on a parkway, and dive on your driveway, but why are they opposite. Also why is matterial in a ship called cargo, and in a car called shipment
Why do we drive in parkways, and prk in driveways.

We drive on parkways because some random guy wanted to name it that.

'Cargo' is not a term used only for boats. It's for planes, trains, and cars. Irrelevant.
'Shipment' is anything being taken from one place to another. It doesn't have to be in a car.
Sorry, not a critical thinking caliber thread.

Actually, although it doesn't really belong here, it is a valid question that I intend to answer.
Assuming I know the answer. I remember that driveways were initially "drive aways", which is what you would use to "drive away" on. But then again, you also return on a driveway, so that name is awkward too.

Ok, sorry my question was too dumb for you guys, i didn't mean to insult your intelligence, it was just a question i was wondering, and still i have no answer other then i was made up by some random guy, which is no help to me, and the cargo thing was just another example of what i was asking. Just trying to figure out some origins og words we use today.Comment

Look it up in an etymology book. There's another book I love called A Bird in the Hand that does lots of this.
Please, don't post anything other than critical thinking in this forum. It's just a policy that was made by some random guy( sorry Synth and staff). I follow it, though, because it has made this place enjoyable.Comment
