Either your computer is not fast enough to handle Stepmania.. happend at my friend's house.
    or
You're using a wireless keyboard.. it causes random misses.
    or
    You just suck..

Try playing songs on beginner + higher speed mods to see if your timing is off or if it's something else.

Also, what are your computer specs?

FFR's timing window is considerably bigger. Stepmania's timing window is smaller and more like DDR.

Hee-hee, let's see what I could do to help.
1)don't use a wireless keyboard, cause it seems to be screwing you up. Buy a DDR pad for PC. That might help. Or perhaps use a joystick? I know Microsoft has one that looks like a PS controller. Whatever the case, don't go wireless.
2)The songs you have might also not be synched correctly.
3)The speed mods are in select options. After selecting a song, hold down on Enter and you'll be taken to the option screen.
4)I don't think you need to be good at SM for R2. It's just that it'll probably have aspects of it like select style and select difficulty etc. The gameplay should still be the same.

I'd say a wireless is ok for SM but if you're serious about it just use a keyboard that's not wireless. Also, just practice.
