    The Cyberathelete Professional League

    O.M.F.G.

Twice every year, the CPL holds a giant tournament of Counter-Strike and UT, and I think maybe something else.

Last year it was in Dallas, at the Hyatt Regency. It kicked ass.
This year, it was at the Gaylord Hotel. HOLY SHIT THIS THING OWNS YOUR MOTHER.
It is so much better this year. Last year everyone gathered around a home theater screen and watched the tournament. This year, they got a fucking concert stage and put a fucking huge screen on it. Also I should mention, the people that were playing on stage were playing Natural Selection. Nice choice, boys.

Also awesome about the CPL is that not only can you compete and watch the tournament, but you can bring your own computer, and hook up to a giant 5000 people LAN for an entire week. Plus, they have a crap-load of sponsers(aka nVidia and stuff) and they LOVE to show you cool shit theyre not releasing until next year, and then giving it out to one lucky winner. There were plenty of games out there for non-competitors and non-brought-your-computer-people to play, especially a 32-people small lan for Call of Duty, a DDR booth, and a Free Play arcade machine of Metal Slug 3. Probably my fondest memory was when this one kid was all confused about how to play UT2004, and I was like, "Well what's the problem?" and he was like, "The controls dont work!" so I tried it out, and he was right! Some asswipe reconfigured everything to a random button! So I spent a good 10 minutes in User.ini reconfiguring everything, and had a good time doing it (aka, getting a Monster Kill when you can only move backward, left, right, and shoot. No moving foward or jumping).

Not to mention, there was a buuuuunnnnnnch of free stuff that was there to grab. I have, like, 6 new t-shirts. Oh, and they had some sweet bargains on stuff too. My dad bought, like, the highest quality PC headphones for only $80.

It was so awesome. Hopefully I'm going back today, and with a camera.

    The original UT? Hell, yes!

If not, then boohoo. They added double-jumps and nasty shit like that.

That sounds really fun. Too bad I am so not in Dallas.

    Signature subject to change.

Wow. I wish that I'd have known about this and that I lived remotely close to the event. This is like my dream. Anime conventions are cool, but sometimes have the weirdest people at them. What are video game conventions like? You just solved it for me. Hundreds of geeks all LANNED together. Heaven in a room.

Not not, the original. Though they were playing it plenty in the giant BYOC LAN room.

And Squeek, you believe it. Its not so much that the LAN is for gaming as it for the fact that more than 4000 people out of the 5000 have every episode Space Ghost: Coast To Coast and are watching Trigun fansubs. All you have to is ask if you can have them, and theyre like, "Sure, lemmie burn a CD real quick"

          Awesomeness beyond awesomeness.

BTW, Incredible Fact: THEY RAN OUT OF BAWLS. I KID YOU NOT.

              Thanks for the correction.
I think I'm going back today some time. Anywhere I can find you in particular, or a name I can follow? Ill be on the lookout for Team Zex, man. That's awesome, even if you did lose.

No seriously, bawls is just a caffiene loaded drink which just tastes like a lighter version of cherry 7up. Bawls doesn't do much for me anyway, the only way I can ever get any kind of noticable effect from caffiene is by drinking coffee. IMO, it's probably one of the most overrated sodas out there.

I'm not down with the whole "cyberathlete" shit because most competitive PC games are boring to me i.e. they're all first person shooters and real time strategy games. While I like Warcraft and all it can get fucking old real fast (which is why I like playing the custom maps) and I've always found first person shooters to be boring pretty much (cept Goldeneye but that doesn't count)

I'm more for the Korean style of PC game making because they usually find ways to make games competitive but innovative at the same time. However, I'm more for the American style of running it because the Koreans always fuck up their games and have lots of holes and exploits and have horrible payment plans.

Anyways, Im on my way now. Bye bye, coming back with pictures of this fantasmatical event!

Bah Redbull sucks too. I drank like 3 of them yesterday for work because i was tired. The only that happened to me was I had to piss really badly. =D Anyway IMe and my friends went to a 3-day LAN party at our mall like last month. PPL were there for days on end just playing UT 2004. It was crazy.

Oh, looks like someone has been playing Ragnarok Online and Lineage 2. And yes, payment is messed up and they dont care. Im a proud owner of 1 year of RO which i managed to swindle from some employee when i callen them up and said they deleted my account. (which didnt exist in the first place)

Uh cpl? Its a nice place, I plan to go next year. The new policy CAL is implementing is fucked up, though. If they had made people pay $5 to sign up for the league sooner, CAL wouldnt be the admin-less piece of shit it is right now.

I seem to be in a ranting mood today. How odd.

                              PICTURES, YAY!

First One: THE CONCERT STAGE! YAY!

                              Neo Geo > You

                              Marvel Super Heroes!

                              Yay for Demo Booths!

Unfprtunately, by the time I got there mostly everyone had left. =( I soo sorry. But you can still imagine a fucking bunch of people being there.

This where the actual competition takes place.

The radio booth, where they played cool music and broadcasted everything play-by-play.

Another shot at the awesome concert stage.

A small portion of the people that were there.

The giant screen where they showed the tournament.

The small LAN I was talking about.

                              YAY FOR MORE DEMO BOOTHS!

A really bad screenshot of Team EYE, the Counter-Strike winners.

This is Caleb, from Arkansas. I met him on the way back from the CPL. Turns out, his team was the 1st place winner of the Call of Duty tournament. So feast your eyes on the face of awesomeness.

And that's all. There's a few mroe pic if you look at the gallery, but theyre either blurry or crappy.
