    Soaking Hands in Hot Water

Cool experiment: I filled the sink with hot water like a mini-jacuzzi before playing FFR. I held my hands in there, and tried to get most of my arms soaked up to my elbow. I kept them there for a couple minutes, so I knew the arms/hands got nice and toasty.

Okay -- run back to the room to play some FFR! Do you feel a difference? I think due to the elevated temperature of the nerves and muscles, the fingers feel differently and respond much faster.

It wears off pretty quickly, but it was a cool experiment!

I do this when it's really cold and my hands get stiff, otherwise there's really no reason too.
I don't know about soaking your entire forearm though..I usually just dunk my hands for a few seconds.

I've also tried playing with an electric heating pad over my hands, but that doesn't really work too well.

Try setting your laptop ablaze, it will keep your fingers toasty warm throughout the duration of the song, at least if your keyboard survives it.

oh yeah warm/hot water is great for relaxing your hands to ease tension going into a key smashing session. Staying relaxed and exerting the least amount of effort on even the hardest of songs while keeping as shake resistant with your inner fore arm as possible in my experience can make a night and day difference in your performance.

But as for the actual premise of the thread, I too have only soaked my hands in hot water if they were literally cold from being outside on my bike (I don't have gloves cuz I'm stupid) so I have never actually done that with the intent of playing FFR after but I have thought about it and can see why it would be a great idea to avoid hurting yourself from too much stress.

I will say when I have taken baths, and my arms are totally immersed under hot water, my one hand trill speed is ungodly and I have no end to stamina while the water keeps my fore arms absolutely motionless and relaxed at the same time. I some times wish I had a water proof keyboard to play sm in bath water (I'll spare you a terminal 11 reference).

I did this during the winter when I still played a lot.

A better alternative is to do a bunch of finger tip push ups. But you should still play some songs to warm up. I found doing this didn't increase my skill at all but it felt better when playing because I started feeling like I'd played for 30 minutes or so.

I've tried something similar to this before (placing my hands on a heater), but I find that it doesn't measure up to a good old-fashioned warm-up. It does help when the weather is cold but that's about it.

Re: Soaking Hands in Hot Water

I actually do this during the winter to help prevent my hands from getting dry. After soaking them in warm water, I apply lotion so the air doesn't end up sucking the moisture out. I had a crazy Russian piano teacher that would shoot laser beams out of her eyes if my hands were the slightest bit dry so rip. It definitely loosens up your muscles a bit for FFR (or in my case in the past, piano) and I find that if you're trying to push your limits, you want your hands to be warm and loose. Who knows, it might even end up being a better situation if you're trying to skillboost.

What about if you wore fingerless gloves to retain the heat in your hands? Not sure how effective this would be as I've never tried it.

I've tried this with wool mittens, they kinda limited my finger movement too much to be effective.
