There's a theory with Pi and the meaning of life...

that there's a golden ratio, and it's the mathmatical equivalent to the meaning of life. i saw a movie on IFC called Pi about a mathmatician that found the golden ratio, and saw it everywhere. eventually it was linked to the jewish beliefs, and the words of god on the torah.

any thoughts? anyone else seen this movie?

its possible there's a very simple number that's the golden ratio for everything in the universe, then after figuring that out, we could go further and find out things about the existence of such a god that would begin from that number.

it's a bit weird, yeah, thinking that everything could relate to just one number, but that's what a ratio does. it relates.

btw... in the end of the movie, it drives him insane searching for the meaning to life through the number, and he uses a power drill to kill himself in the bathroom. least... i think he kills himself. the next scene is him sitting on a bench doing math tables with a little girl, then the camera looks up and focuses from the leaves going up and down with the wind, to the sky.

I haven't seen that movie, but I think that's just weird. Maybe even insane. Then again, me memorizing the number to 800 decimal places is insane (but true). (Shhhhh...)

Just out of curiosity, how do you think a number can relate to a descriptive meaning? sure we see the 3.17blahblahblah but how are we supposed to know what it means?

Ummm... are you stupid or mathematically challenged? Or just young?

It probably wasn't called Pi. The number is called "Phi" and it half the square root of 5 plus 1. It's the golden ratio. It is used for many things in life.

No kidding. There is. It's 1.618, but it doesn't determine EVERYTHING as far as I know, just a lot of things, paired up with the fibonacci sequence. i.e. the number of petals on a flower, the designs of snowflakes, the spiral of seashells, the way a pinecone's little thingers and a sunflower's seeds are arranged... our hands, our bodies...

And ren, you got the third digit of pi wrong. o.O That's just sad.

What is the world coming to these days?

The number Pi (3.1415...) has no special meaning other than the relationship it has with circles.

I'm sorry I don't have to concern myself with Pi in any way and haven't used it for 5+ years.

Becoming onverly obsessed with pi can actually become dangerous. I've seen it almost become a life obsession with people. Starting with myself.

as amazing of a ratio pi is, it's not the answer to everything. Some people just have to come to terms with that.

WE NEED ANSWERS. The normal human being will not sit still knowing the solution to life is around the corner...

                        Wait a second...

Solution to life? Meaning of life?

Could life POSSIBLY have a meaning? And if it did, once that is fulfilled, then what?

                        Meaning... Purpose...

1 a : something set up as an object or end to be attained : INTENTION b : RESOLUTION, DETERMINATION

                        Intention. Resolution. Determination.

There is no purpose to life, why would you want a purpose? an end?

Don't worry about some number. It couldn't possibly mean anything beyond something to do with mathematics.

Just enjoy life, and do the best you can.

pi [3.141592654] is also used in something called "the permiability of free space. and if you can clearly explain what that is i will gladly give them 600 credits. note, no just regurgitating what google has to say; trust me i have tried to figure it out before.

Permeability of free space? I believe that has something to do with the matter stored in space, but I'm not sure what... gah. Now I wish I paid more attention in class.

Yeah, free space is pretty permeable.
