    Question: Longer playfield on Stepmania?

    Hi all!

I use Stepmania v5.0 alpha 3, and I have a question for everyone I know this is possible to do as I've been told by Jousway, isk/Summerschool, and a few others, but I can't seem to find out how... I have been playing games like Stepmania and FFR for a while now, and recently Thirdstyle. Thirdstyle has a very long play field, so the arrows are on-screen much longer than FFR or SM (for example, I use C675 on Stepmania and have trouble reading C700, whereas on Thirdstyle I can use 850-900 or so). It helps a lot in fast passages as with 850-900 I can read the patterns easier than C675 of course. The problem is switching back to Stepmania (and definitely switching back to FFR, I can only read 2.5 or so and when it's that "slow" everything is MASHED ultra close together, if FFR had a longer play screen I'd be far better than what I'm capable of now). I can go and play the same song in Stepmania but not be able to read it at all and failing because the arrows are too smushed together, and if I speed up my mod to spread them out, the arrows are too fast!

SO! That being said, my question is: Does anyone know how to extend the playfield in Stepmania? I have checked all the options (and yes, I've tried just enlarging the game, but that just stretches and scales everything in the game so that doesn't work) and I've found elsewhere that it has something to do with the code. I know it would probably involve making the arrows and receptors a tiny bit smaller, and I'm fine with that, probably wouldn't be a huge difference anyway

Thank you all for reading and for your consideration, and even if you don't know the answer I'm still happy to be here and make my first thread. My name is Sam

P.S. I genuinely apologize if the thread has been made or the answer is somewhere, I really did search for it and still can't find it! If it's out there, I'd be extremely grateful if anyone could direct me there. Or if you know anyone who might know how to do this, it'd be great if you could pass the thread onto them too.

There is a way and it has to do with fiddling with the theme metrics. Sadly i dont mess with sm5 so i cant help you there. I'll give the metrics a quick lookover though

This is a weird question. I mean, dont most players use a small screen cut for FFR because it helps with reading? When there's less on the screen, there's less to process. That makes reading easier.
I guess it comes down to personal preference.

Sorry i was no help for your question.
It doesnt matter where you draw the line, everything leads to the same place... Over the line!

people who use higher speed mods usually like more space to read

also people who migrated from itg (like me) cant stand to have anything on the bottom of the screen blocking notes

Haha weird questions are fine. Early on before FFR had speedmods and there was only x1, people would use screencutting because it gave the feeling of the arrows moving faster (just by putting them on the screen for a shorter period of time). This isn't necessarily the case for me though, since we do have speed mods.

The problem with using a small screen on a lower speed mod is that the arrows end up being very close together (try it yourself to get a better idea of what I mean ). Now that's a problem cause on fast rolls or jumpstream I get lost in which I should be hitting first and I can maintain a consistent combo but my accuracy goes out the window! So I increase my speedmod to spread out the arrows and can read it fine. However, the problem with FFR and SM for me is that I see that the arrows are very close together and kinda smushed, so in a normal case I would increase my speed mod to spread them out. However I'm already at a speed mod that if I go any faster, the arrows will move too fast for me to see comfortably and I do even worse. Thirdstyle has a longer playfield (probably twice as long as FFR and a good amount longer than SM as well) so I can read higher speedmods. The arrows are spread out and moving faster, but since the playfield is so long, I can still read them.

this is hardly a weird question lol. i've actually changed my arrow receptor placement on my sm but its sm3.9 so what i did doesnt really transfer over to sm5

            also what valor said

Re: Question: Longer playfield on Stepmania?

Thank you all for responses so far. I have found that mini (since being different from mini on FFR where the game keeps the same horizontal distance and just makes a mess) on Stepmania increases the height/width ratio of the playfield. This is actually exactly what I'm looking for but the problem now is that the arrows are faaarrrr too small. A writeup on modifying this somehow would also be much appreciated.

EDIT: Figured it out in the process of transferring everything from alpha 3 to beta 2, but basically everything has been situated thank you Carlos and others for helping/pitching in.

This is pretty off-topic, but how did you get alpha v3? I can only find v2 on the Stepmania website.

I downloaded Alpha 3 when it was the latest version. Although I did upgrade to beta 2a and it did not run as smoothly as Alpha 3 did, so I uninstalled it and switched back. You can download Stepmania 5.0 Alpha 3 at the following link:

NOTE: Store your "Songs" folder in another location (I dragged mine to my desktop first). That way, when you are installing Alpha 3 (and uninstalling beta 2a simultaneously), you do not have to redownload all of your songs.
