It's time I say something about this

For the past 3 years, I've been depressed as hell. I always beat myself up over the most trivial things, and I've kind of used drugs to escape from this. I'm tired of it.

Does anyone here have advice? I know this is FFR and not exactly a forum full of expert therapists, but anything would help at this point.

    Have you tried medication?

What a lot of people don't understand is that depression is a lot more than just feeling sad. Sometimes it's a sort of disease that can't be solved by any amount of rationalization or will power.

Medication never helped me. Get a therapist (a good one) who can help you. Drugs (recreational) will just make you worse, because you'll develop a "this is helping me, so I have to do it" mentality.

listen man, i've been depressed as all fuck for the past 1 and a half years or so, i did the same thing you just described. been smokin lots of weed, been drinkin every now and then. i thought it was fine to "escape" like i was. for some reason, just one day i decided, "you know what, that's enough. i'm sick of this shit."
i've picked back up on exercising and getting back in shape. it's really helping me a ton. i've got better self esteem, confidence, and i can actually sleep at night.

I'm not saying that going out and exercising is what will help YOU, but maybe try doing something that you really love to do, something that you did before you were depressed that was helping you all along.

edit: i myself don't recommend medication, as meds can often times be of the same nature as other drugs. you're covering up the problem. (but rubix is right about one thing, depression isn't just sadness, it is a disease.)

Exercising is one of the best ways to fix your depression.

Especially since if you're robotripping you can get hooked on that shit and then you'll really feel bad.

I beg to differ. We are all professionals.

oh yes not to mention i was robotripping quite a bit. like...once every 2-3 weeks. that's really not healthy for your brain.

decided to stop that as well. I'll still smoke some weed here and there, but not in such an abundance

If you really are.depressed, go see a therapist ASAP. Depression is not something can be easily cured, and if anyone tells you otherwise, ask if they have a professional diagnosis or a degree in psychology. If they have neither, tell them to shut the fuck up.

I'd say you should give up the drugs cold turkey, do all you can to ease the depression. If you feel like smoking, drinkin, robotrippin, etc, go for a walk instead.

If you go for therapy, if you dislike your therapist after at least 3 visits, ask for another. I have had one the worst therapists I can imagine, and I've also had one of the best I can imagine (why did he have to retire )

.... A2P man, I dunno if my words mean much to you but...

Every time I get depressed it takes a few days to go away. I start asking myself stupid meaningless questions over the most trivial things, like "what is the significance of waking up" and usually I would answer "because it doesn't matter, we're all going to die some day." I would usually dig myself deeper into the question until I just get so depressed that I can't even walk to the kitchen. What helps me do things I am required to do without the use of drugs is actually hope. I can start aiming for things in life and make myself stand out from other people and gain a position in life and stuff. Even aiming for crappy things like getting out of Highschool without quitting is driving me right now.

I guess what I mean to say is, if you preoccupy yourself with thoughts that counterattack the thoughts that make you feel like shit, you can get rid of the depression.

I don't know what you mean by "beating yourself up" but I think you mean getting pissed off at yourself by doing dumb shit. In my opinion maybe you could just shove those ideas as soon as you think them and just replace them with better thoughts about what you actually did right, instead of what you did wrong.

Even if I'm off base, I still think you should start giving yourself more credit. Hold back on the drugs, use that achievement as a crutch for a bit if it makes yourself feel better. Once you get back on your feet, you'll get better at noticing what sets you off and what you can do to balance it.

tl;dr: it's all about balance. Happy thoughts are best against thoughts that make you feel like shit. Do what you can to balance the good and the bad.

and in case you want to know, I've been fighting with depression for over 5 years now. I don't take drugs for it, or even do them in general. It IS possible to stop feeling like this.

get off ffr and find something to do in real life that brings you a sense of accomplishment

it can be small stuff like building a lego castle or working to renovate your house or fixing a dumpstered car into an awesome machine

What can you do realistically to have a better tomorrow?

Think about that all day instead, you'll be on the right track.

Ass to penis... We are here for you bro. There are a lot of good suggestions in this thread. Specifically doing what makes you happy.

As someone who has rarely experienced depression (if at all) I can't say I know what you are going through. But I'm rootin' for you, and in all honesty I hope you don't totally leave FFR because you're one cool dude, and it would suck to lose you

I wish I had some better words but I'm at a loss. Take care, man.

Honestly fixing my financial problems fixed 90% of my depression. I honestly didn't realise that what was making me the most depressed was almost completely irrelevant to emotions.
