Good, but I feel it loses some of the charm / feel of the original piece due to the 8-bit instrumentation. Cover-wise you nailed it though.

Also work on dynamics a bit more, but I don't know how easy that is with famitracker.

Thank you both, although now I'm curious what is missing from the 'ideal cover'. More filling out of chords? Different volume-over-time changes? Take the piece 20km south and do something different?

While I can see where CBR is coming from, I'm not entirely sure I agree. Still, taking it in an 8-bit direction should allow you to go a bit more crazy than this. It's excellent either way.

I feel like the song perhaps could've benefited from different instrument choices. Sadly as I don't pay attention to Famitracker I'm incapable of being more specific, but perhaps revisiting the song and playing around with which instrument plays which channel may prove to be a worthy effort towards self-improvement.

I really really like it, oh god the nostalgia I really need to play this again, honestly the best game emotionally.

I can partially agree with CBR, though I think it's more it gives off a different mood because it's 8-bit. Can't really describe it, but either way, it's still a good thing because it sounds really amazing.

I wonder if part of the different mood is due to having lots of notes in the chords an octave lower than normal. If I 'fix' that the song sounds like this:

It's less bassy, more harmonic.

This would be really cool, coming up with new material to a song like this is difficult to me though. I will have to think about it some more

It can definitely happen. The other song I really want to cover (the one that plays during the final 6 hours) would be really difficult though
