This is why you shouldn't rely on "The Cloud"

What started as a small issue affecting some instances of Amazon's Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) in North Virginia became a full-blown outage of AWS in North Virginia. Major services, such as Reddit, Foursquare, Minecraft and Heroku, are down. GitHub, imgur, Pocket, HipChat, Coursera and others are affected.

GameFAQs, Imgur, Reddit, Minecraft, and many other sites are down because they rely on Amazon's Cloud services, which are having problems.

This is precisely why it's not a good idea to make your site rely on any kinds of Cloud services (from any company) -- it just takes those services going down to tear your site down.

It's also why it's not a good idea to make your site rely on scripts hosted elsewhere (among other reasons why this isn't a good idea).

Hah, wow. That's embarrassing. It's too bad it would cost so much to set all that up yourself - for a smaller site it is kind of prohibitive to NOT get Cloud services from a company like Amazon.

I do wonder why a cloud service so many people rely on can't be made as robust as, say, many Google apps.

I can't blame them. cost savings for them could easily be worth potential downtime.

      lol at minecraft, though.

Maybe Amazon shouldn't be located in a place known for it's moody weather patterns. Maybe this'll warn people about the overreliance of new technology. Now that we know the hazards of cloud storage, people will use it properly, but that is asking alot from average peoples.

This sounds like a pretty major problem. Kind of sucks, Amazon is a good company.

I don't think people should stop using cloud services, however people should have backups available. Some of those websites probably do, but they weren't mentioned.

The same could be said for any storage of any data anywhere. It's far more likely to go down if you use something local when you aren't specialized in data storage.

I thought this was going to be about how Windows 7 cloud saved something but the program you're running isn't accessing the cloud right or something so you've lost time trying to get it back.

I'm willing to bet these sites would be down a lot more often if they weren't hosted on amazon. How often does amazon ever have problems? Is this the first time it's ever really caused anything?

This isn't a reason to not rely on data center professionals to host your site. They have a great system for nearly 100% uptime as well as nearly perfect redundancy. You are way better off using these services than investing in the time and hardware to do it yourself.

Of course this is mostly related to sites with excessive traffic.
