    overcoming lag on vista

I started playing FFR in March this year all the way until the official tournament started, when I decided to play stepmania instead (due to lag that was actually coming from the site, if I remember right). I got hooked and played a ton and skillboosted. Now I'm back to playing FFR and since I got better from playing SM, I'm eager to get some good scores and AAAs on FFR, but it's impossible. I tried ignoring my lag and just try to have fun, but I'm at the end of my wits and quite annoyed.

    Description of the lag:
FFR standalone (flash 9) is very choppy, the arrows can still be seen moving upward, but they skip ~1-3 frames every second or so. The game is still quite playable and I can usually get around 3 goods or better on a 1000 note song (that I would normally AAA). What happens is every now and then I hit a note and it registers anywhere between 1 and 3 frames late. I see it fly past the receptor, often in jumps where it's like a 3 frame split that I know I hit together.

I've tried lots of different fixes, but either they do nothing or just increase the FPS of the game, which very slightly decreases the amount of random late goods I get -- not enough to make the game enjoyable.

Does anybody have any tips on what to do to get rid of this? Has anybody had this exact problem before?

FFR is infamous for running very poorly on Vista, unfortunately.

I wish I could offer a legitimate solution, but a lot of people will probably tell you that your problem is that you're using a Vista operating system.

Have you tried using the R^2/R^3 engines to play? They should be an improvement in performance and they might not be affected by that same lag that you speak of.

So are there no players who get a lot of AAAs that use Vista? I really hope that there is just some solution that doesn't involve getting new comp/OS that other Vista users have used in the past.

Not true. EN has Vista I believe and he's D6.

Go to Control Panel Home (Start -> Control Panel) -> System and Maintenance -> System.
On the left side pane, under the Tasks, Click Advanced System Settings.
Click Settings under Performance. Click Adjust for Best Performance.

If you're running anything else, turn it off.

This should get rid of most of the lag.

To get rid of any other unnecessary processes running in the background, you can turn them off using msconfig (type msconfig in the run box) or download gamebooster.

I did both of those, and I also run GameBooster. It slightly reduces the late goods, but doesn't get rid of them.

@TC_Halogen, I would use R2, but whenever I try to set up the controls to SDKL, I click and there is just a field that says <?>, and it doesn't get populated by the key I press. Maybe I'm doing something wrong ??
I haven't played R2 for a long period of time, but I will try it tomorrow if I can get the controls working. It'll be hard adjusting to a new engine again. Hopefully it works, and thanks.

Ultimately the majority of people who use vista computers have lots of annoying lag issues. I used to play FFR on a Vista very early on, so I can tell you what I did to reduce lag as much as possible:

            - Obviously put FFR on low quality
            - Flash standalone (you use 9, that seems to work pretty well)
            - Adjusting your computers settings to run "best for performance" in the performance options.
            - Setting your flash standalone's priority to high on the task manager.
            - Closing all processes you don't need in task manager (including explorer.exe, you can always bring it back by going to new task and typing in explorer.exe)
            - Some people say applications like game booster help out, if you want to attempt that as well.

Even with all this I still experienced lag blurbs on my Vista, but it's as good as it's going to get unfortunately.

Right clicking flash player and increasing local storage to unlimited greatly reduced that weird frame skippage I used to have when I used Vista by a shit load.

I've already done this and it doesn't remove the problem, but it slightly reduces the frame skipping (although not the random late goods).

Playing on http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...y/ffr_Wide.swf on Google Chrome and with a non-maximized window with the aero effect turned of kinda helps for me (not sure about Vista though, its been awhile since I played on my Vista PC)

I've tried playing on the standalone link through the browser before, and I have an interesting problem.

There is literally no frame lag, everything is perfectly smooth. But it just misses every 100 arrows or so, especially in denser areas or in jumps. So I end up with scores like 950-0-0-8-0.

However, this was through Firefox, so I'll go DL Chrome and see what happens.

For Vista, I have the theme set to Classic...not sure if that's the equivalent of turning Aero effect off, or what that even really is.
