    Mirrored ball test

Some of you probably saw that I had gotten this thing in the "Look what came in the mail" thread:

Well today I finally got to test it out, and I'm pretty impressed by the results to say the least.

(probably should go full screen but whatever)

    Spot the not.

If you're just confused and have no idea what you just watched. Mission accomplished.

Just thought it would be interesting for all like, 3 of you, who are into 3d. Definitely worth getting one of these mirrored balls.

          Re: Mirrored ball test

The mirrored ball is placed in the environment you're filming, and a series of HDR photos are taken of the ball. You can translate the merged HDR photos of the ball into reflection, light intensity, color, and ambient occlusion information inside of 3ds max and apply it to any model. In other words any model I put in the scene will actually have the exact same lighting as its real-world scene.

This was tracked in Boujou 5.0, rendered in 3ds max via Vray, and composited with After Effects. The dolphin statue and the green lighter are 3d models.

Without a mirrored ball you'd need to create all of the digital lighting and reflection maps yourself, which is super tedious and time consuming.

Things that are still tedious...Color correction, grain matching, depth of field matching, light wrapping...but those are all in AE and don't take too long.
