As of right now, the only appeal o!m has over sm or lr2 for me right now are loading times, the pp(broken-soon-to-be-possibly-fixed) rankings and other network features that weren't really o!m specific to begin with. (ingame chat, multiplayer, etc.). As far as gameplay is concerned, other keysmash games do much better imo.
(but in the end i'll still play all three \o\)

I have only been playing rhythm games since a couple of months ago, but do you think that StepMania will ever get any of the social/online features that osu! has? I think that the social features are one of osu!'s strongest selling points. I realize that StepMania Online exists, but I'm not sure how well integrated that is with StepMania.

            Re: osu!mania vs. Stepmania

            bad jokes inc.

osumania is basically this generation's o2jam a.k.a. every chart heavily relies on forced released holds, mashing the spacebar (or w/e 7th key is mapped to), and note density via chord-stream to increase difficulty threshold. top all of this off with poor accuracy/timing judgment and we've got ourselves a game that's ridiculously stupid to score well on unless you grind like east asia.

also, if you're looking from a stepmania elitist circlejerk viewpoint in terms of charting/simfile making, every ranked osumania chart is either severely under-layered (considering aspects such as song choice and overall intended difficulty), over-layered (a.k.a. noodle fest chord-streaming with no particular song relevance), or just plain doesn't make sense period. in retrospect though, this is basically r21freak calling every simfile coming from ffr bad (surprisingly, many people there are strong about their opinions...), so this should be taken with a pinch of salt.

there are better rhythm game alternatives to osumania to be quite honest (beatmania, bms/lr2, sound voltex, etc.) but it already benefits itself from osu alone. massive integration of gameplay modes, chat integration, ease of access with charting/mapping, online rankings, and overall convenience make osu a far superior online rhythm game in comparison to others.

            to each their own though.

                Re: osu!mania vs. Stepmania

I find it funny that the itg community still thinks that to this day FFR is a dumpfest of shitty files on the simfile database (which no longer exists anyways)

each community caters to its own style of simfile and osumania has ushered in a new gen of o2jam elitists that will probably only ever make noodlestream wannabe lr2 dumps

There may be more, but there ain't a wider variety of charts. There's no barusa of mikosu, mekadesu, or c18h27no3: and that's inexcusable for a modern rhythm game. And those are only a few examples of songs that aren't on step mania.

C18 converted is pretty nice, it's fun at rates, it's way over rated difficulty wise in osu

You can open .osu files with arrow vortex, fix the offset if needed and then save it as a sm file, both games are good etc, different mapping styles, more maps to play, I don't see why people couldn't just play both, this isn't like brawl vs melee this is like project m vs melee, c'mon boys

Stepmania. osumania has great controls, but forces you to release at the end of a hold everytime.

Stepmania is inspired by DDR and Guitar Hero, so I preferred it more for simfiles. I have to give credit for osu!mania to play songs generated for osu with its own unique gameplay

I like both, but stepmania is more better.

That feel when you have a song in osumania called "Hold Angel" and it's not even holds ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
