Re: Songs of the Week (Aug 4, 2013)

N's Farewell illustrates a big problem with a lot of piano songs that are being submitted to the batches lately.

    - The gallops are two notes at max. Some of them are stepped as three notes in that file, and then stuff like this happened:

The mix of hands and gallops from the close placements in the .sm file make it impossible to tell whether or not the file was meant to be hit as actually gallop bursts or jumps. If it was meant to be hit as jumps, then it should have just been stepped as jumps. If it was meant to be hit as gallops, the converter does not care. It's unfortunate a nice song like this had to succumb to more awkward color note playing with mixed note placements. Many piano files being submitted are like this too.

If something is supposed to be hit as a gallop, don't use ridiculously close intervals. If something is supposed to be hit as a jump, just step a jump. The converter does not care about the author's intent. Every stepper needs to keep this in mind every time they place color notes. Every time something like this happens, I patiently have to wait for whenever there is a jump placement in notes, and then it just becomes awkward.

I'll be honest, I much prefer Rebound's Witchcraft.

Also Dossar, I say this is the nicest way I can... But you obviously didn't look at N's Farewell close enough; there is a difference between the two and three note graces. On top of that, it's irrelevant if the converter doesn't care because there are numerous people on the site who know how to apply frame fixes. On top of that, that's because we convert them from one file format to another in the first place.

You're gonna be terrified if / when Our Final Mourning [Standard] hits the game. That chart make's Silvuh's charts look rather tame in terms of grace notes. This assumes it doesn't get jerked around forever in the batch like N's Farewell did.

Nobody cares about how close sounds are on 0.3x rate when they're playing the file on normal rate. The "third step" is just a barely audible sound nobody hears. Shade had gallops that were stepped after the initial sound happened, and I'm not the only judge to point it out either

It is very relevant to step something either as jumps or gallops because if a stepartist purposely neglects this important part, then your file becomes a mess after conversion and the player can't tell if it was supposed to be hit as gallops or jumps.

Also, stop saying "nicest way I can", I know you talk smack in skype chats all the time

The problem occurs in a lot of piano submissions too. If a piano player splits a chord, it's stepped as something ridiculous like 192nds which can only be distinguished on something like 0.3x rate.

I'll be honest, it took me ten plays to get through the intro because it doesn't flow as nicely as Rebound's (to me anyways.) Also the ending 32nd notes drive me crazy, I don't even hear what they're to tbh.

I also have never tried his on Xmod, I should do that. I've played the SM version, but I never saw an Xmod symbol, so I assumed he did that to just color it neatly. I'll have to play it that way sometime.

As to Robotomy, I don't understand the hate you get. I actually kind of enjoy the file.

because it's stepped in a really polarizing way and it's a lot more leftfield than vortex (which seems to be hit or miss enough as it is)

Chipscape was fun. I like how mi40 (anaru, OHN, what do i call you) handles bursts by effectively stepping them just as multicolored hands. It's fun.
Patterns were somewhat predictable but appropriate and had nice flow.

Everything I say is in a way subjective because I only look at the file and not play it.
                          ---

I thought Down with the Sickness was an index file, but I was treated with doublesteps
Good file though, interesting for people starting the game.

The bursts (or whatever the term is for them) in Chipscape are a bit weird.
                          - 3 noises = hands
                          - 1 noise = quad
                          - except the first single noise in the cooldown which is a hand
                          - whereas the subsequent single noise is a quad again
                          - there is one set of 3 noises where the last one is higher pitched, while the arrows stay the same

N's Farewell has a bit of weird jump usage (and non-jump usage at times), but p gud.

Do I remember Witchcraft from DF? Somehow I remember it being more jacky.
                          Fun file.

Nope, different file. I didn't even realize there was a Witchcraft on DF (never really used the engine).

Witchcraft was great. Layering made sense, patterns were mostly okay. Some weird 1-handed anchors such as 111(12) which could have been better. Also the 32nd pattern at the end was a bit troll (try to put fast trills on two hands or else people rage :P) but yeah

                              good file
                              enjoyed it a lot

props for having the note colors make sense despite the weird time signatures

I mean the 32nds at the end are the only thing I really dislike about the chart. It is not bad by any means, but Rebound's is simply the one I prefer. I do see myself playing this again even after I AAA it.

I mean Rebound's has it's down side to, which is the dang quads at the end, I was glad you chose not to use them.
