>***Sync needs work - see notes. Going to give judge notes for this file as-is, then detail what will be a somewhat extensive sync fix. The slowdown is close, but the overall sync needs a good deal of refinement.
>***Parts of this file (notably the beginning) have what we used to call “Blue Note Syndrome.” Essentially the downbeat of the song is charted on 8th notes (blue notes) when it should be on 4ths. Fixing this will be covered in the last note.
Playtest Impression, 0.9x Rate – Immediate impression, feels like there’s some weird layering choices here. I’ll have to look at this one closely.
4.880-11.949 - There doesn’t seem to be much reason for the white notes here. There isn’t an overly unique piano hit or anything else that they accent. I’d recommend just removing them/put back on 8ths.
7.315 - missing
9.200 - ghost (note doesn’t exist in the music)
13.755 - ghost
20.096-21.667 - why are these all hands? And why are they all different? It’s just the piano playing the same pitch.
29.442 - ghost - no piano (which is my assumption on the intent given what immediately follows here)
39.258-40.986 - this is one oof anchor on 1
39.965 - ghost
40.279 - missing
44.285-44.913 - these aren’t 12ths, hits will land on 44.520 (3 16ths after the 4th), 44.756 (3 more 16ths later) (might be clearer after sync fixes)
55.914-1:08.480 - you’ll need to brush through this section for accuracy. There doesn’t seem to be quite as much of a polyrhythm here as the chart would suggest. Try charting each element separately (eg. on different charts/difficulties) and see how they should combine
1:10.364 - should probably start following 16ths here
1:15.077-1:15.234, 1:15.705-1:15.862 - (very optional) might like these parts to be 24ths instead
1:25.914 - why step all the drum 16ths that start here and not at 1:24.658?
1:33.460, etc. - I really like these - they’re a good idea for this sound
1:35.652-1:36.438 - don’t hear any 16ths here, just 8ths
1:36.909 - 32nds should start here, make sure they’re still jumptrillable (might need to remove jumps up to 1:37.380 to accommodate them)
1:39.736 - 32nds? Probably okay to leave out if you want or make 24ths
2:07.223 - no reason for this to go to 48ths part way through
**The layering (use of jumps/hands/quads) choices for the whole file, as far as I can tell, is exceptionally inconsistent. I can’t reasonably list out such inconsistencies - I have to get through as many files as I can. Broadly, pay attention to how you use jumps/hands/quads and ensure you use them in a consistent manner in each section. You should be able to answer -why- each of them is a jump/hand/quad, and be consistent with their use – a jump for this sound is also a jump for the same sound over here. This is the closest layering approach that I can guess was intended to be used here but this needs a more careful execution.
!!!This should be your last step to fix this file. Doing this will slightly shift the timestamps of my other notes, so to prevent confusion, I recommend you do every other fix you plan on first and save a backup copy of your file just in case!!!
I’d recommend placing a placeholder mine at the start of the slowdown before you do this so you know where the slowdown begins.
First, you’ll need to change the offset to -0.034. This will be more accurate for the beginning (before the slowdown).
–This step will also have the effect of needing to move all your steps to the proper downbeat (up an 8th). That is, select all (ctrl-a), cut (ctrl-x), move to 0.977 (now a 4th), and paste.
At this point I’d recommend deleting every BPM change that isn’t the starting tempo as the first step will make the current BPM changes be in the wrong spot.
You’ll then need to redo the BPM changes for the slowdown. Even if you’re not a ddreamstudio fanatic (like myself) you can still use ArrowVortex’s waveform (and filter, Shift+W) to help align notes to the waveform’s peaks. I say redo very deliberately – the original sync is noticeably off, so it needs to be reworked.
Make sure the notes are correctly synced coming out of the slowdown, and it should be good to go.
Don’t forget to remove any mines you placed! (In ArrowVortex, Notes > Select > Mines, Delete)
This might end up giving “Blue Note Syndrome” in a later section of the file, but that can be somewhat easily fixed. Either the judge(s) might pick it out (if you resubmit), or you might notice it yourself now that I’ve pointed it out.
This needs extensive work to get it to an FFR-ready state. Between the sync, layering consistency and other errors, there’s a lot to work on.
But, this is a decent effort for what appears to be your first chart (at least, your first submitted to FFR), and there are a few good ideas in here. Don’t be afraid to try sending another song! Or try fixing this one. Please don’t be discouraged by a reject rating – it took me a few years to get my first file in, but the charting community is a lot more helpful now than it was then.
If you have any questions, by all means reach out in the FFR Discord’s #simfiles or DM me, preferably on Discord.
