Default Guess Who's Back

Oh boy, it's been a while.
No need for catch-up or anything just a new Chiptune for you all to enjoy -- a rework of the original Donkey Kong theme.

More will be posted on the new soundcloud of mine, so be sure to follow and comment.

FFR permission is obviously still granted, so feel free to step if you are so inclined.

PS: Any old-school songs you want to see remixed / reworked?

I think this was cool! I'd like to hear what you could do with Super Mario World

I'm sorry, it's a good track don't get me wrong, but I just cannot get into chip tune, and there's enough of it around here I feel like I have a pretty solid idea of how it sounds.

I'd like to like chip tune, but, I don't know. What is it about the genre that you all find enjoyable? Maybe that'll help me understand more.

Please use this track to explain why, some how. I'd feel bad for drawing the attention away from his song.

I think chip has the best sounding leads out of any genre ever. Chip is generally lacking a bit in rhythm and definitely lacking a lot in drums, but dose leads mang... Especially the SID chip had absolutely stellar sound in general, even though it still kinda sucked for drums. I guess the biggest drawback of the genre is that a lot of it tends to sound really similar, and often somewhat bland (but that can't possibly be the problem for you since you like dubstep har har). That said, many composers really know how to work with this sound and they can produce some seriously awe-inspiring stuff. Sabrepulse, RushJet1, Psilodump, Goto80, Binärpilot, Virt, iPatch (under his The One Electronic name), Anamanaguchi and many many names from the demo scene are good examples.

In many cases, due to the chip limitations, the composer is forced to focus a lot on the melody since that's what's going to stand out the most. Extra Credits over at Penny Arcade had a good episode about this if you're truly interested in why people still swoon over this stuff.

Even though I said all that, I think it mostly boils down to nostalgia. I grew up with this sound as a child so it's not entirely unsurprising I still like it.

ps I'm not a huge fan of this track. you probably should've moved away from the source material a bit so you could go for a ride. that said, I think the NES DK stage theme is a terribly boring pos to begin with so maybe I'm a little biased here hehe. I dunno I'm pretty crap at commenting on chiptunes in general, get Kommisar in here or something :I

To me it's "videogame" music. I know that that's a way off position, but as a kid, that's all the games really sounded like. Like Stone said it's about the melody mostly, and not bass/drums/beats. I'm terrible at describing things, but nostalgia would be a good description.

Nostalgia has to play a huge part in liking chiptunes, imo. If you didn't grow up with an NES/SNES/Sega Genesis, chiptunes might be a bit harder to get into.

I did though. Not as much as some of you since I'm only 16 but I still play those games on emulators and I was really into all the game boy color games.

I'd love to hear any track from Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 2/3. Would highly prefer boss or battle themes though.

Oh, and before I forget, and as an apology for helping derail your thread a little...

I honestly really want to do this one myself, but there are plenty of rock/metal arranges of it and many other Ys songs already.

Another super cool track from the same game:

DO EEET

edit: stepmania warning

and yeah I just discovered how great the Ys series is even though I've heard songs from the soundtracks several times already.
