Sexual desire is an evolutionarily successful unconditioned response. Experiencing it is the standard. This perfectly natural need is often romanticized to those with relevant prolonged cultural exposure. As for why people are so obsessed with it, we're not only biologically inclined to be affected by others; there's also an element of cognitive distortion to the process, seemingly a consequence of ongoing idiosyncratic pursuit of effective ideologies. Romantic love as an ideology is a logical fallacy that I'd class primarily as perpetuated by emotional reasoning and the overgeneralization of peripheral moral values.
