Ok, so I'm sure everybody's seen The World's Greatest Riddle thread in CC. Well, upon implied request of some people, I'm plopping a thread in "Game" threads about it. In order to avoid arguments I've thought up some fair rules. We can alter them as we go along.
The Rules: - Standard "Game" Threads rules apply. Meaning only 1 post per forum default page (every 20 posts). - If this thread is deemed as competitive, the rules remains as this: You may post a new riddle or attempt to solve the current one only after 10 posts from your most recent have been made. Ok, let's start. I'll dish out an easy one to get the ball rolling: Mom and Dad have four daughters, and each daughter has one brother. How many people are in the family? P.S. The only time a person may post more than once (breaking the rule) is if they are running the current riddle and are clarifying a question or confirming the answer as to allow the next person to post there riddle (also breaking said rule). EDIT: In light of devonin's thrilling post, you may only post an answer or question or riddle.

And now, by RZR's game rules, neither RZR, Psychotik or I are allowed to post again until at least 7, 8 and 9 more people post respectively.
Edit: Yeah, pointing out the poor logic in the ruleset was actually pretty thrilling. I feel so light and special inside. Last edited by devonin; 05-4-2008 at 01:17 AM.. |

Three guys go to a hotel for the night. They go up to the counter and ask for a room. The man said it was $30 for a room. The three guys each paid $10. They then go up to their room. A few minutes later, the man at the counter noticed that he made a mistake. For that night, the rooms were $25. He called the bellboy and, gave him 5 dollars in 1 dollar bills, and told him to bring it up to the guys. The bellboy took the elevator up. Then he thought "I can't split this money equaly". So when he got to their room, he gave them three dollars back. which ends up being $27 dollars in this problem. The bellboy took the 2 dollars and then the final total is $29. Where's the missing dollar?

There is no missing dollar. The riddle is posed in such a way as to suggest that some rounding error might be creeping in, but it relies on you making a false assumption.
They aren't paying 10 dollars each then 9 dollars each, and they aren't paying 30 dollars, then 27 dollars. They are paying 30 dollars, which is supposed to be 25 dollars. The hotel keeps 25 (25) The bellboy keeps 2 (26)(27) and gives 1 each to the three people (28) (29) (30) 30==30. No missing dollar. As an aside, when I was in highschool, my Grade 11 math teacher gave us this problem, and it completely stupified me for weeks. |

And, also... I think the answer to the riddle... Well, the three dollars given to the men was subtracted from thirty, so the two dollars the bellboy took should also be subtracted from the thirty, not added. And twenty-seven minus two makes twenty-five, which was the price of the room... Or something like that. ... Right? Ninja edit: Yeah, dev went in to more detail than I could. |

Silvuh is also right, and better described where the inherant "trick" to the riddle is located. They do sneak some addition in there where it shoudln't be.
Here's a relatively easy one (I presume) Used left or right, I get to travel, Used up, I vie for sweet success, Used down, I cause men great duress. |

+ I think I've heard something similar to this before. I'm probably wrong, but if I'm right, I can't have a go because I'll be in school. EDIT: Lol, that missing dollar riddle was old. OLD I tell you. Hehe. Last edited by lxDestinyxl; 05-4-2008 at 07:53 AM.. |
