Social media sites are making it harder and harder and harder to maintain privacy in the name of "facilitating sharing." I got around the YT naming issue by switching out the email accounts to dummy accounts.

The problem here is that employers care about internet sub-life and think they can draw meaningful inferences from it. We're going to reach a point where everyone has their dirty laundry. It's stupid to expect people to live squeaky-clean lives.

It might be stupid, but you do have to admit that if you wanted to hire someone, you would want someone who's respected and nice, not someone who's secretive and if they hide secrets, that means they could be withholding info that would disqualify them from the job.

This is another way of restating that (flawed) argument "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear."

Just because someone wants privacy doesn't mean they're "hiding anything." I'm sure you're not doing drug deals in the bathroom, but when you go to take a shit, you sure as hell close the door.

People shouldn't have to worry that every move they make, every word they say, or every bad/embarrassing/etc decision they may carry out -- gets put up on permanent display for all to see.

You can determine someone's "respectability" through things like character references and interviews (which are by no means invasive at all), which are required in most cases. If an employer really needs more information than that, I'd say the employer has issues and isn't very efficient.

If I am hiring someone who is, say, good at coding and is a team player, I can glean these things by making my interview process better without getting invasive.

So do I really need to know the applicant's YouTube search history? Do I need to see all their Facebook photos? Do I need to see everything they've ever said on online message boards? Hell, why not their dating history? Their bank statements? Do you see where I'm going with this?

It gets to a point where you basically have to act professional even in personal/private settings because something you say or do might end up publicized, and honestly, that's no way to live.

Reincarnate, I understand and side with your opinion, but nowadays most big companies will check FB for job hunters and use social media sites as a background check. I don't know why since most people get their jobs the same way as usual, maybe with a Linkedin account thrown in.

Anyways, I do what everyone else does. I have one email that's for ALL my social media like this and Youtube and Twitch and wherever the heck else.

I have another email that's strictly for professional/business. As in, if I want to an email from an employer or my boss, I want them to use that.

'Cause ya know... my email that I use for social media sites is kind of "dohoho" if ya know what I'm saying.
