Default New Search Engine?

http://www.wolframalpha.com

Try it and discuss, Please keep in mind it's in the alpha stages and most likely won't return obscure information quite yet.

It seems pretty promising to me, would have helped a lot in school since this appears to be a little more scholarly. And instead of searching page results, it just displays information so it's quicker.

http://www24.wolframalpha.com/input/...and+everything
Get the important information... Get's a thumbs up from me.

Oh and LOL at the "search the web" function using google if it doesn't come up with information.

This is less a search engine and more an encyclopedia.

Why would we need a new search engine? We already have google.

If you think google has absolutely no flaws, then you have your head up your ass. Yes google is great, doesn't mean we shouldn't stop trying to make something better.

Knowing that Wolfram is slowly trying to take over the world...

I like this though, it does integrals and plots things and solves equations and knows specific things.

It won't replace Google or other search engines that use the web as a resource.

it's interesting, sorta cluttered. Says a lot about math on the first page under the bloaty search box. I'll give it a try for a few minutes... tell ya how much i don't approve of it

edit: OH it's a big frigging calculator with neat tidbits of info if you enter a date! no wonder there's so much math there, good for all the mathletes this worlds needs. Ya think they'll port this to an app?

edit edit: it's ok.... won't be using it as I'm not that big for math on the internet.

Again, this is not a search engine, this is a language parser built on top of Mathematica that will search through hand-picked databases for specific kinds of information as well as formating it the way you request. Google, however, takes your request and returns the websites it thinks are the most likely to have the information you need.

That's extremely cool for math reference, nice. Wow...I think it owns my TI-89. The format for inputting stuff like integrals is so lenient.

Pretty soon nobody will have to go to school but will have to have the internet so that basic skills such as math can be done.

Pretty soon no one will need to "know" anything because the internet will "know".

I'd say that statement is generally correct about the direction of our sources of knowledge. But like...even though we have calculators to do so much stuff for us, we still find ourselves learning and working with 200-year-old math theorems and such in the 21st century.

It's a nice calculator.

There was another search engine that used to show you everything instead of hyperlinks, but I forgot what it is because it sank so fast.

You guys suck . It's much more than a "Mathematica".
EDIT: Actually, in a broad sense, I suppose it is a Mathematica.

It still makes for a nice Firefox toolbar though.

Wow I'm surprised that people have only tried putting math in... They apparently didn't see the "new to wolfram" thing... As kekeb examples show, you can but in a ****load more than math and get really good answer.

try states, cities, science formulas, species names, animal names, greek gods, books, movies, music(nothing foreign yet, Doesn't know who Malice Mizer is). hell, Math isn't the only answers you can get out of this(even though I must say it does a lot better with math than Google is.)

Mind you, I still use Google, I just saw this and thought that it would be awesome to share since it is a good idea. No more worrying if the site that google links you to is even valid anymore.
