[2] Guidelines
Most of the time, referrencing to canonical sources (official website, artist facebook, soundcloud, newgrounds) is encouraged. Music databases (Wikipedia, Discogs, Rate Your Music, VGMdb, etc.) are useful for additional information but we should be careful because they usually have their own set of rules for uniformity or convenience. For example, Discogs do not follow any capitalization rules to speed up approvals. Ultimately, those guidelines are not set in stone and can change. [2.1] Conflicting sources Having conflicting sources is common and can be frustating. Usually, we should be using the source closest to the artist's intention. If there's no way to figure this out, we can use capitalization rules. [2.2] About song names [2.3] About artist names [2.4] About links [2.5] About musical genres |

Re: Song Corrections Official Thread
Got two or three things to add. I'll try to be concise.
As far as the list goes, we realized the limits of having to work from an external point of view rather than being a part of the music producing community. So, our work consists ultimately as a verification of the information that are already being listed as of the FFR Song List. Thus, the author and the song name. That's all there is to it. ____________________ One of those limits is that we could not verify the concordance between the song's audio version present on the site, and the official release of the artist as it would have been too much time-consuming and money-consuming. As an additional corrector, I'm trying to localize songs that have been misnamed or have been mistaken for another, but it's still a demanding task. (see Elektrik Shiivers by Aliceffekt for instance) If you want to help, it would aid greatly if someone could be on the lookout for this kind of information. We will also be contacting musicians so that we can have their input on the information presented. Concerning the chaotic pattern with genres, as Noname said earlier, we could not do much more as to what is already integrated to the site, since we do not know the FFR position on creating a more methodical system for those. Also, since there is so much about it that we are clearly unaware of, the position of FFR is what matters the most (we would certainly not replace genres that the community consider relevant). Finally, we are reluctant to replace genres with more acceptable substitute, since most of the time it does not represent well enough the feeling of the song. For example: Press Start is labelled Click House and would have been replaced for Chiptune. In that sense, we will make a database of genres according to the RYM list of genres and our knowledge (http://rateyourmusic.com/rgenre/) At last, about those FFR artist profiles, since there is a lot of research to do on these (aliases to find, regroupments, new/old accounts), we will include them into the finished list unless it is a necessary source. I personally reckon they are often more reliable than social networking sites. That's another information that we need to rely on the community. (apart from the musician credits page) ____________________ As of now, my contribution stops at Aliceffekt, and goes on at random points throughout the list. (Letter C, D and E) If this list receives positive feedback, I plan on completing the verification. I consider myself an extremely meticulous and stubborn person when I do my researches (to the point that I dig really deep into anything). I reckon it might be exhaustive and detailed, but it is necessary. And so, if anybody has any objections on the changes, feel free to discuss. We're really trying to make the move for a better organized website. You will notice that this thread is a first draft, hence why we posted it early (and in time for the new year). We'll post the rest as the thread gets interest. Although the list is done from A-Z, as a whole, it's still a WIP, and heavily needs contribution. There is still a lot to do, but we believe this list will help into facilitating the task mods and admins are charged with. All there is left is the community contribution and agreement. In hope this initiative will help motivate changes to the site. (like the completion of the new tier point system. (talked too fast :D) IMPORTANT: As we speak, I am preparing a file with all sources that explains why we are making such changes, that way it will be easier to discuss and take a position. |
Re: Song Corrections Thread
For artists that are located on Newgrounds, it might be worthwhile to leave special characters out, as it usually is intentionally done for distinction in the audio portal.
Example: {Rose}, {Blaze} for Cornandbeans. This might be worthy of ignoring special characters. |
Re: Song Corrections Thread
Agree on this.
Proposing minor changes to songs so it can ease the search query could really help. I mean it's a complicated matter regarding songs like R/\in and all. I don't know if there is any way of crediting the official song name on FFR or sorting out between alternative song names but it would be ideal. Still, there's some problems with special spelling: like -API- / API or Envy / EnV |
I...
@ Crazyjayde
Don't forget that we don't need to have -API- changed to API. Those corrections only concern song names. As for those changes, if the name of the song makes it too difficult to be found in the engine via the search option, I think we should use an alt name. For cornandbeans, I don't believe it is necessary since we can simply write Rose to play {Rose} or A Change of Seasons to play {A Change of Seasons}. EDIT: Thinking about that, if we're sure the name wasn't written like this as part of the title, it should be changed. |
Re: Song Corrections Thread
Thanks again for taking so much time in creating this list. Now I have a ton of stuff to amend (later on)...
Quote:
Side note: "&" seems to be the only acceptable character to use when attributing multiple simfile artists, as that will automatically create a link to those simfile artists. Quote:

Quote:
I really hope though that Velocity or Zageron could find a way to provide substitute values for a select few songs. That would definitely be preferable, not only in the correctness of the song, but ease in finding it too. And finally, I'd like to mention here that the Ingame Song Information thread is severely lacking in general publicity. It is a nearly dead thread, and I feel that proper, correct info should be more well-known. Whether someone wants to make a new thread, or have another innovative idea, I'd like some ideas. Quote:
What I'm thinking is to make a front page post to let everyone know that a number of changes were made to FFR's songs. They can then be directed to this thread and become informed. After a while, people will get to recognize songs by their proper titles for once. There'll definitely be a transitionary period before that happens though. Quote:

e.g. "Click House" is really just 8-bit or glitchy/electronica music with a house beat - Press Start definitely has that distinct beat that other songs on FFR labelled as "Chiptune" doesn't have. Another thing to note is that some songs have genres as specified by the artist him/herself (e.g. the song genre for BEER is and WILL remain as "Collage Techno", not "College Techno" or "Techno" or anything else as such) or was originally derived from another rhythm game (e.g. Kick Your A is a remix of the song "A" from DDR/IIDX, and that song's genre is "Renaissance"). In other words, there will be some limitations when it comes to make genre changes. Quote:
I'll reply to some of the mysteries for individual artists in another post. |

I also heard that FFR will change its format and presentation in the (hopefully) near future - the relevance to this is that "Arcade" as a grouping could be removed altogether. Then we can stop calling those songs "video game remixes". |

44teru-k : Was supposing those titles were translated since they are lowercases and the artist is Japanese.
5 OC Remixers : If we drop out Game Remix as a genre, then Pops should be used. But I really don't know what Pops is. Is it a derivative of Pop ? Toxic : I do think Post-Hardcore is an accurate genre for the song. As far as Hardcore (EDM) goes, I don't think it is very confusing. There's also Hardcore Hip Hop or Hardcore Punk which are two other genres that have no link whatsoever to Hardcore music. We could also use the Screamo tag. A. Dvorak : Was wondering why there's no classical composer with its full name. Is this to save space ? Antinomie : I found where the songs were featured (Electric Dreams 1 in 2003 and Electric Dreams 2 in 2003). They were probably composed earlier but I found no trace of that. Antinomie should then stay. BACO : Didn't work at all earlier this month. :| Now it works like a charm. Ieva's Polka (Basshunter Remix) : Is the genre more known as "Hands Up" ? BELUGA : Link still works (http://www.muzie.ne.jp/artist/a060881/). Muzie changed its domain from co.jp to ne.jp. That's where some of the mistakes in the links come from notably. Thanks for the link! I'll try to find more about him now I know a little bit more about him. Captain Jack : Information come solely from Discogs. Apparently, K.O.G is a remixer for Dancemania and Total Operator (dunno what those two are xD). championanwar : I'll try to contact him eventually. Constructor : The link leads me to his muzie page (http://www.muzie.ne.jp/artist/a016621/), this is where he submitted for the first time the song (back in 2005), with the exact same title. Also, for the translation issue, when it's a translation made by somebody other than the artist itself, should we meet capitalization ? |

I'll even quote something legit from the Urban Dictionary (out of all places): "A genre of trance music which typically ranges between 138 and 145 BPM. It has themes in common with Euro, Trance, Happy Hardcore, and Hardstyle. It is typically unpretentious; very poppy and commercial." Quote:

Huge thanks for the links and info bmah, I'll look these up again before going down on the list. (still don't know how the f I missed 44teru-k's personal page) EDIT: About that Hardcore shenanigan. I believe Post-Hardcore and Hardcore as an EDM genre is not that big of a mixup. :) They both have been around long enough to be distinguishable. I get your point though. Might be because I'm not coming from an electronic background all that much. |

Re: Song Corrections Thread
I have contacted Velocity about special characters compatibility, search query alternatives and other questions. We'll know about this later on.
I'm thinking this thread is a temporary proposition to modifications so we can all agree on what changes should be applied. I believe an official thread could be made out of this? I'm up to helping on creating something we can publish. Quote:
Btw, I'm looking at team holic's page as of right now (http://www.muzie.ne.jp/artist/a046080/), and I was wondering, since there's no name credited under "teraholic", if D-Suke's has been part of the production or if it's really just 44teru? (don't know if it was part of the BMS of Fighters 07' since I can't find any archive on this). In that case shouldn't it be tagged "44teru-k/D-Suke" or even "holic"? EDIT: Just thought about this, but, is it justified to leave the [Heavy] tags if there is no other counterparts apart from Stepmania? Just wondering if some of those seemed out of place now. |

Re: Song Corrections Thread
This is an amazing project and undertaking and glad this is being done.
That being said, is it possible to change my artist name to CBR in-game and in the list provided? If I recall correctly, I just used Coolboyrulez0 to receive credit for the composition (which is sadly very dated) but CBR has been my artist name for at least 2-3 years now. On another note, I'll look over all the changes with what knowledge I have, but so far everything seems superb. Great work, once again. |

Added section [9.3] Other useful links with very important information we're using for this research. Thinking about it, we could contact the artists if they have a profile on the website and ONLY on their FFR profile. Andreas Kuch (slight change in the proposition) Mario Mix For Piano -> Mario Mix for Piano Added more widget corrections : And...... letter D. This took more time than I expected. I'll see about getting a team updating these, using your work.

Re: Song Corrections Thread
Well I'd like to have people become aware of the changes, so I'd rather have the changes done at once, as opposed to slowly and gradually making the changes whilst people becoming confused at the changes.
Right now, I'm hoping to eventually see all of the corrections that they post. I'll try to look through them and see which ones are acceptable to correct and which ones should be ignored (others are free to help). It's not until a more trimmed-down list of corrections is made that I think the fixes should be done. Basically, once that's solidified, a front page post can be made to inform people of the changes. Everything can then be fixed directly from that finalized list. If the changes are actually done within a number of months, people may become confused (most commonly the song name changes) - not to mention, a fpp to inform everyone at that point would feel less relevant for a dynamically slow process. It would be nice to have helpers point out errors and other opinions on these corrections. I would hold off on making changes immediately though. |
Re: Song Corrections Thread

FFR is LOOOOONG overdue for a cleanup like this, great work mang I agree with beamer that doing all the changes at once is probably best. |

Re: Song Corrections Thread
Are we gonna integrate the OCRemix artists we have into these normal lists?
I find it odd that they are clumped under the "OCRemix label" which isn't a label in the first place but rather a portal for video game remix. That's like if we had cornandbeans and envy and all those guys under a newgrounds label list. It's rather odd. I propose to integrate the OCremix artists we have obtained into this normal list. (http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...d.php?t=121825 under Label permission > OCremix artists) (more info on if they are Full permission or remix only permissions can be found here: http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=15735 -- read note at bottom!) |

Um, specifically, those two were a grey zone and we didn't know exactly what to do. Since they are a collaboration and they don't have an official name, we were thinking giving them the name of the puslisher/web portal. At first, I was thinking to credit every artist like this :
5 OC Remixers -> D-Lux, Geoffrey Taucer, Jillian Aversa, Shonen Samurai & zircon 7 OC Remixers & Nobuo Uematsu -> bLiNd, Fishy, Jillian Aversa, Sixto Sounds, Steffan Andrews, Suzumebachi & tefnek (btw Nobuo Uematsu shouldn't be credited) Problem was the character limit (75) and the fact that we're not sure how well they'll display in the game. But, I believe this is how they should appear. I still hesitate about this entry since we shouldn't limit ourselves to technical difficulties for the database accuracy. Quote:

Update about the current situation : I re-started working on this list after more than 1 month... I have barely enough spare time to work on this atm.
Plus the lack of feedback kind of depress me, but I was expecting this. I would like to know how much time it would take to calculate the exact length of every file. I mean, the total number of frames in each file. I'm doing it by hand right now and it's not accurate (+/- 2 sec.), so it only gives me an vague approximation. Also, how are the length of the newer files calculated ? |

Also, not sure if this has been mentioned but some of the rock-style video game remixes are under the Rock genre while the other half are categorized under Arcade. This should probably be made more consistent. |
Re: Song Corrections Thread
Quote:
Thinking about this, I believe it should stay only for that reason. I leaved the proposition, but added a note. I can image a rule concerning japanese titles : we should always use the original name, even if it's in japanese. Correct romanized title can be used if it's impossible to display japanese characters. As for other language system (cyrillic, korean, chinese), original name is first, then a correct translated version if the characters cannot display. For special characters (@, /, $, etc.), first the original name, then a modified version if the characters cannot display. Quote:
EDIT : Gathered all the data and compared all the songs : EDIT 2 : Btw, only 229 songs have the correct displayed length. 15%. EDIT 3 : Made a spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...aTXlHNGc#gid=0) Concerning the genres, I think they are outdated and need a revamp. Arcade itself isn't a musical genre (just like Misc or Dance) so, a lot of songs can be transferred to other categories. There were some suggestions made last month, like using difficulties instead, but I do like the classic names. We could have a clean-up and add other song styles; breakcore, house, chiptune, IDM, trance or techno for example. We could even remove the Dance category. EDIT : Btw I do like Silvuh's icons, but they should have only 1 character, to keep a unity between them. |

Screw the idea of sorting by genre entirely. Sort it by difficulty, a way that actually makes some deal of sense and is significantly less subjective. |
Re: Song Corrections Thread

Or what about a poll and see what's the consensus ? About the song style, I agree, some of them are ridiculous (Esoteric Grunge comes to mind) and I think we can come up with better names. Cutie Pop for example sort of represent the song style and the feeling even if it's not a real genre (cute and poppy sounds). Of course it's subjective, but we need to fill out that space anyway. Maybe Chiptune J-Pop would make a better genre, I dunno. If you have any good ideas. |
Re: Song Corrections Thread
I think the author for Unconnected. should be changed from t+pazolite to t+pazolite feat. Rizna (but it appears as リズナ on the discography).
The author for Indo no Sobaya (t+pazolite Remix) is RoughSketch feat. 臨界モスキー党 (which translates to (if I remember correctly) Rinkai Mosquito, which is a group that RoughSketch is in). The song appears as 印度のソバ屋 (t+pazolite Remix) on the album but, I think since FFR doesn't use the Japanese text/symbols/language on song titles ingame, the title might be correct as far as translating goes. For do i smile? it appears as Do I Smile? on the discography. |

I found something about Charlotte Summer that I'm not sure now : Charlotte Summer -> Charlotte Summer remixed by Kyrandian The song might be called Wish (Asiago Remix)... (http://soundcloud.com/jihnsius/jihnsius-feat-charlotte) But if you look up in the comments, you see Kyrandian say "Kyrn remix"... jihnsius uploaded a version of the song Wish (Kyrn Remix), but it's not the same song : (http://soundcloud.com/jihnsius/jihns...at-charlotte-1) Is it a mistake or Kyrandian remixed it two times ? Btw, letter J is done : |

EDIT : Might have to do some more work on classical pieces, I have the feeling I didn't do it correctly. Also, will probably propose the correct name in Japanese as well as the romanized version. |

That way, it's a good compromise between accurate information and recognizable song names. It's also a nice idea to keep the common name at the beginning of the name since titles often do not appear completely. I don't see why finding a song would be a problem though. Even if the name for the piece is two foot long, typing in the common name in the search query will isolate the corresponding value. But yeah, if you search songs according to genres, it could become a problem... It's a shame there's no way of inputing a secondary title for a specified song like SM. It could have been of great use. :\ |

There's some other cases I really can't find what's going on, and we would have to contact some people outside FFR to get more information. We just have to be prudent on how to approach the artist. Quote:
Anyway, as you said, it would be more convenient to have the common name first, then the "reference" name. Like this : - "Moonlight Sonata" Piano Sonata no. 14, Op. 27, No. 2, Mov. 1 - "Badinerie" Suite No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067 hi19hi19 did it this way on this thread, and we (Crazyjayde and me) thought it would be the best way to write them out (after a quite intense debate I should say ^^). I would like to do the same thing with Japanese title, something like this for example : - Border of Maximum (極限領域) - Zephon (世音) But, that would not be possible. After we've gathered all the data and make the changes, I would like to set an extensive database (so we could have more information about everything concerning the songs and artists - something like the in-game song information thread). So far, I've set up this list, but the problem is that it's on another website. Probably like a wiki or something so people can add their own information. That would be cool. edit : ninja'd EDIT 2 : Thinking about : how are we going to write One Minute Waltz v2 ? Full name is Waltz in D flat major, Op. 64, No. 1. How are we going to tell the difference between the first version from the second if the search will cut out the last few characters ? "Minute" Waltz, Op. 64, No. 1 v2 would be the correct way... What about "Minute Waltz v2", Waltz, Op. 64, No. 1 ? |

Actually, idea: put the classical info in parentheses. Your second example would be Black Key Etude (Op.10, No.5). Then if we have a v2 we can just put it before the parentheses and it wont look weird at all. Quote:

It's a good argument to add a "secondary title" or something... we could put classical info, original language titles, and even album data there. Less clutter for people looking for songs to play, but anyone who wants to can look it up. |

Having the real title in parenthesis after the common known title (similar to the classical proposition) is something that, imo, could work. We wouldn't have to rely on a separate database see the real name. Of course, a better solution is a secondary title. |

On another note, Arrogant Cobbler is mislabeled I think. It's supposed to be Arrogant Cobbler (Nero's Day At Disneyland - Rock Rock Rock Remix), basically it's a remix of Rock Rock Rock by DJ Donna Summer but it's named as Arrogant Cobbler. The title is too long though, a secondary title would definitely suffice. http://www.discogs.com/DJ-Donna-Summ...elease/1486707 |

I know I've proposed the artist name "DJ Donna Summer remixed by Nero's Day At Disneyland", but I wasn't sure for the title track. Was it really intended to put the title like this, or it was to indicate who made the remix ? It's a digital album, so it can be downloaded. So, I think you're right. Looks like the name is really Arrogant Cobbler (Nero's Day At Disneyland - Rock Rock Rock Remix) |
Re: Song Corrections Thread
The artist should be just DJ Donna Summer. Seeing that Nero's Day At Disneyland is already mentioned in the title, the "remixed by Nero's Day At Disneyland" part would be redundant.
Same goes for the other Rock Rock Rock remix on FFR, the artist should be just DJ Donna Summer, instead of "DJ Donna Summer feat. t+pazolite". |
Re: Song Corrections Thread
I don't know about the rules concerning this (or if there are any), but I don't think the song name should have an impact on the artist name. They're both different things. I see the remix as a work of both DJ Donna Summer and Nero's Day At Disneyland, I believe both should be listed. Even if it's redundant with the title, it's more homogenous with other remixes (less exceptions)...
About t+pazolite, it should be "remixed by", not "feat." right? |
Re: Song Corrections Thread
Yes, it would be DJ Donna Summer remixed by t+pazolite if that's the case.

Re: Song Corrections Thread
I dunno if anybody remembers the super old FF7 Battle that got disabled due to permission issues with The Black Mages.
Well, today I found out that the FFR version of the song was from the video game's OST, not from the Black Mages themselves. By way of comparison, here's the original: And here's the Black Mages' rendition: This is assuming that SilentWeaponsIII has his sources correct, of course. |
Re: Song Corrections Thread
Correct we used OST version, same with Chrono Trigger.
Black Mages battle rendition was never stepped but should be given that we do have permission. |
Re: Song Corrections Thread
@noname, if you can compile and sort the list of songs in order of largest time difference (I'd rather get the big ones out of the way first as opposed to < 5 sec differences), I'll fix the entire list over time
|
Re: Song Corrections Thread
I think you're on the spreadsheet atm, I've changed the last column and the songs are ranked by their time difference.
Re: Song Corrections Thread
Perfect, thanks. I'll post occasionally to let you know which song I'll have last stopped at.
edit: Everything up to and including Computer Dreams on the spreadsheet is fixed. Only less than 15 second differences should be present now. |
Re: Song Corrections Thread
Time to finally take a look at some of the proposed corrections. Last time I checked, I looked over the letter C. (note once again: anything I don't remark on assume that I agree; any questions I don't answer assume that I don't know either)

You actually have to register to peruse through it, I'm still looking though for any song listing or anything so I'll edit this post whenever I'm done looking. Edit: Won't get too far into it, this thread refers to the 300 SM original simfile: http://z7.invisionfree.com/Detach/in...ic=93&st=0&hl= plus a nice small talk about FFR sim database back in the day. You can find the original 300 by Detach M-STYLE stepped by Hiryuu on BMS 7, but this is the only info I can find as far as song name. (source: http://z7.invisionfree.com/Detach/in...wtopic=209&hl=) |
