Haha, the sick thing is, it's actually feasible -- check the all-time high scores

Slight improvement. =O
MrRubix
10-4-2007, 03:18 PM
In the future I'll probably make bonuses only achievable for people below a certain average rank in order to help decrease the variation a bit, I was not expecting Kekeb to rape this game silly. Although really this is really a game to be played not for the credits, but to see how you stack up against your fellow FFR'ers in terms of diversified skill :D
If you happen to look at the highscores today, i got a higher score of 68k, my photobucket isnt working right. sorry.
EI_Tizzy
10-4-2007, 03:26 PM
ok, wtf Kekeb?
I will get 80,000 if it kills me!

10-4-2007, 03:37 PM
I'm assuming the mental challenge will be scored by time? O_o
MrRubix
10-4-2007, 03:37 PM
In general, yes, by time. And there will also be another section evaluated by correctness, but this section I might not implement yet, who knows.

MrRubix
10-4-2007, 04:31 PM
Just letting you guys know, I'll probably make the mental challenge round longer in duration. It's going to be hard, but if you do it slowly and carefully enough, you'll figure it out I think. Four days should be enough.

10-4-2007, 04:33 PM

Rubix if you could please wait....I have a score of 50k but it is saved to my laptop......
I will probably post it by 6:45, and if not before 8 or so but will you please count it no matter what?
you can look on the high scores and see I'm not on there for today (meaning I am not playing past the time limit), I got it yesterday when I posted.

here is mine.....
it wont load but my score is 22900
Trying to get a higher score because like I've mentioned, not good with mental puzzles... trying to embrace the impact it will take on me :P.

I am surprised more people have not taken advantage of Round 1 -- there are 12 people that did Round 2 but not Round 1, and maybe only 4 that did Round 1 but not Round 2

round 1 is hit or miss.... some people just can't meet the req.

Yeah.. Round 1 has a requirement (that I still cannot do >.<)
While Round 2 has none :3
Fractal_Monkey
10-5-2007, 05:01 AM
Yeah, Round 1 is much harder for me. I still can't do rounds 5 or 6, but it's very slowly getting there.
Also, I'll be staying up late for the mental challenge, but I don't expect that it'll be something I can easily do in half an hour.
Oh, and a slightly better score:

in that case I will probably improve my score later this afternoon....
MrRubix
10-5-2007, 10:56 AM
Just giving you all a heads up, I might have to post the mental challenge round sooner because I am going to dinner with my girlfriend and her mother who just flew in from HK, but I can't say for sure yet what time that will be. If I am not here I could prob get an admin to edit my post at 6:30 with the necessary updates. I'll probably choose the point allocations for the round after people start submitting answers because I have no idea how quickly people will solve it, so whoever submits first will probably set the curve at a few thousand points.

EDIT: Nvm i see why it's .5
MrRubix
10-5-2007, 11:37 AM
I don't think I would require one to solve a cube.
Kekeb: 1.5 because Truthfull put you in Rank 2 for Round 2
EI_Tizzy
10-5-2007, 11:46 AM
If the Round must be started early, please don't start it with an arbitrary time like 4:17 or something.
MrRubix
10-5-2007, 11:52 AM
If I were to post it early, I'd probably post it within the next hour or so, or I might grade it differently, by time intervals rather than constant time.

MAKE US SOLVE RUBIX CUBES
I just started learning, and I can get it down to like 3 minutes... not very fast, I'm sure, but better than my old average of 4 days
I wouldn't mind this, I can average about 55 seconds per cube solve, and that's with me starting and stopping the time on a stopwatch.
If you are going to post the next round early, you should post about an hour before you do saying that you're going to do it in an hour, so people that care can be there when it starts.

The next round will be up in an hour. It *will* be a challenge that will probably take you a long time. Probably multiple sittings unless you're very observant. I'll decide point values once I start getting answers.
Nice, XB!

You could start the first correct answer at 4,000 (or whatever), and then scale everyone else to that person.
Or whatever... it's your tournament.
XBmaster
10-5-2007, 01:10 PM
Rubix, do you think that you could post the round by round score for everyone in the first post, or maybe just screenshot your excel sheet and put a link to it.
I want to see how I stack up round to round, rather than just total.
EDIT:
This would also let us check our scores to confirm they are correct.
MrRubix
10-5-2007, 01:25 PM
Sure, I'll screenshot each round after they end and put up links above the point totals.

It will probably be in the range of 7,000 points for the first solver, decreasing from there. Then second solver gets 7000-x points, then third gets 7000-x-y, etc.

I wish I could quote all that...
Also, for #1, don't you need to know the speed of the Synthlight Photon? I can't find out how far it traveled because it doesn't have a set speed.
How fast does the light particle travel? or is it just the speed of light >_>

Mitchtyler
10-5-2007, 03:51 PM
Just a question, when the photon is in the middle of the two, does it get destroyed?
# of myriameters the photon goes until they collide. whether or not its destroyed, you stop at when they collide.
oh man, I am having trouble with #3. I have all the numbers except the one from the second picture i think. ill help with #1 or 6 in exchange for some kind of hint? pm me
Tasselfoot
10-5-2007, 03:55 PM
ieat: i'll help you with 3 and 6 if you help with 2 and 5. :)
i've got 1, 3, 6. will trade clues for clues on 2, 4, 5, 7, 8.
lightshark
10-5-2007, 03:56 PM
In theory, up to the point where the two people intersected each other, it would oscillate with negative fractional exponentiation, producing decreasing decimal additions, but since people physically can't intersect, you can assume that we stop measuring the photon's distance the instant the two people collide.
EDIT: Ugh...ninja'd
Ok, Tass.
I also understand 4 now, but I can't extract an answer. : (
MrRubix
10-5-2007, 03:58 PM
lightshark: Correct, but solving #1 using a series of summations would be disgusting -- it's more of a reasoning problem than a full-on physics problem IMO. You stop measuring once they collide, or more specifically, when the distance between the two people are 0.
MrRubix
10-5-2007, 04:01 PM
I've gotta duck out for now, but good luck to you all!
Help with #1...
My answer came out that he lost money...
But I made it a physics problem full on...
And Rubix says it shouldnt be...
Any clues on how to begin?
I used the pythag. theorem...
But I dont think thats right...
If im not aloud to say that I used that... tell me in a PM...
I dont know the limits of what is considered "giving away" the answer
MrRubix
10-5-2007, 04:03 PM
It *is* a physics problem technically, but what makes it special is that the standard way of solving such problems is, this time around, made easier by some additional facts which save you a lot of work.
Fantasticone
10-5-2007, 04:05 PM
Hard lol.

So, for the requirement, we have to be able to give correct answers for all of the challenges? We cannot submit just certain problems correct?
Also, the bonus points for solving the cube. Can you submit that without having any of the problems solved, since its bonus? Or can you only submit that after having the objective completed?

another question, please answer soon Rubix... when in #1 you ask how much money Tass has when they collide, do you mean his net gain, or just the money he gets from Chardish (without regards to how much he has to pay back)?
MrRubix
10-5-2007, 09:14 PM
I will post hints as time progresses -- I'll prob post some hints now.
I will just give a crapload of points to the first solver and just give each solver at that fewer and fewer points
Regarding Tass: His net gain. Technically it asks how much he has after they collide, and so by this time we are to assume Chardish and Tass have exchanged all money within the bounds of the bet.
Regarding Notpron: <---- was one of the first to solve it! :D

10-6-2007, 12:24 PM
2-9 Those questions right there. All but 1.
MrRubix
10-6-2007, 12:29 PM
2: The key's encrypted... which means you need to "fix" it. But how? There are word clues in the note and the names to help you figure out what WD3 encryption really is.
3: You can do this riddle from across the room really lol. As for the binary and ternary, use google
4: Use the source, Luke!
it's simple logic:
if no one needed any more hints, you'd have a lot more people that solved the challenge.
I'm stuck at 2 (I don't really have any idea for it, and the hint didn't help me at all..) and 5(had some idead but they lead me to nowhere. I don't even have an idea of how an answer to this one can look like. 5 different numbers? one number after combining the answers? in both cases I don't know how the answer can be achieved..).
as for #8, what are the small x's? are they the same as the big x?
I'm gonna think about #2 some more with this new hint you gave right now. is the story above the note from a friend important?
MrRubix
10-6-2007, 12:41 PM
#2: Pay attention to the names. What do they all have in common? Try speaking them aloud, maybe it'll jog your memory a bit. As for the story above, it's useful for knowing the friend's name, and it's useful for knowing where you start on the map.
#5: You have a clock. I mention that half of their aspects may be more than mere numbers. How many aspects are there to a clock time? This means one aspect is another -- the other aspect is something more than just a number. If it's not a number, how else could you represent it? How else could I write "2"?
#8 is an equation. FOR EXAMPLE: If I say Y= X + X^2 for 0<X<3 , then this means I should do the equation for X=1 and X=2. You replace X with the number, so Y = 1 + 1^2 = 2 for X=1, and Y= 2 + 2^2 = 6 for X=2. So WrongAnswerx, would be WrongAnswer1 for X=1. Something like WrongAnswerx+1 would be WrongAnswer2 for X=1. For example, FFR Song4 might refer to "The 4th FFR song". So say, for X=2, x * WrongAnswerx+1, means 2 * WrongAnswer2+1, or 2 times "The 2nd Wrong Answer"
4: Use the source, Luke!
I hate you... ugh i feel stupid now that i got it.

Ok, time for some *massive* hints. Only highlight these if you're desperate.
1. One of the FFR players goes away and then over, meaning the straight distance between the two players is like the hypotenuse (longest side) of a triangle. The two players both run at the same speed, which means they will collide in the middle of the hypotenuse. How long does this take? How long will the photon be traveling for and how much distance will it cover? Be careful to convert things to the right units. 1 m/s (one meter per second) is the same as 60 m/min (sixty meters per minute). As for the speed of the photon... look around. There are two people who will tell you. Who would know?
2. The story is important to know where you begin on the map. The names are important clues to help you figure out how to decrypt the key. This very message is encrypted with TNR encryption. After that, you'll better be able to make use of the map. Then play some Duck Duck Goose repeatedly...
3. Stand back for the first picture and relax. Small details are not important here. Let your mind look at the big picture of things. Then you'll better be able to find the number in the second picture. Google can help you find for ways to convert binary and ternary.
4. Source... You need to look at the source. Don't know what that is? Without it, you wouldn't be able to read this very message. What composes the diamond?
5. What's in a number? IV? Four? 4? Why would only half of the "aspects" be more than mere numbers? How can you manipulate this information?
6. This riddle's easy. Again, it's right at your fingertips. I've told you where to look and how to look.
7. This is the easiest riddle yet a tricky one if you don't understand 8. The answer's given to you. But not the correct one.
8. Try rearranging it... you want the right answer, yes? Not the wrong ones! Rearranging it: Right Answer[x] = (Wrong Answer[x] * Wrong Answer[x+1])/x. So, if x=1, that would mean, the first right answer equals the first wrong answer times the second wrong answer, then divided by 1...
9. Once you have everything else, you must be able to read 1337. What have you been solving for so far? What could leet imply? You must do something with your answers and then put it all together... you'll derive a final answer. Then all you gotta do is pay him a visit...
Would also like some feedback:
1. How difficult was this round from 0-10 (0 being insanely difficult, 10 being omfg easy)
2. How fair was it? (0 being totally unfair, 10 being a fair/decent challenge)

Okay, I've figured out how to use screen recorder, and I understood a cube tutorial. I'll probably spend tomorrow memorising it and making a video, or at least writing everything down.
I've always wanted an excuse to learn the Rubik's cube.
Feedback for Rubix:
Difficulty - I'd say 2 or 3. It was three hours of slog to get 4 of the first 6, although some were much easier than others. That fact that only 5 or so people have solved it so far probably tells you it was pretty tricky.
Fairness - 10. It was hard, yes, but nothing that couldn't be worked out logically/mathematically. No background knowledge was needed, which is the sign of a good logic puzzle.
Fun Rating - 9. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, although staring at one puzzle for over an hour without getting anywhere was a test of my sanity. Good thing I think sanity is overrated.
I'm looking forward to the next mental challenge.

Would also like some feedback:
1. How difficult was this round from 0-10 (0 being insanely difficult, 10 being omfg easy)
2. How fair was it? (0 being totally unfair, 10 being a fair/decent challenge)
3. Any fun? (0 being I-hated-it, 10 being omfg moooore moooore!!111oneoneonelimx->0 sinx/x)
1. Difficulty - 0 - Too hard for me. Didnt know anything except 6 5 and some of 4.
2. Fairness - 1 - There's a disadvantage for younger people because we dont know this stuff.
3. Fun - 2 - Not that fun.

Even the highlight hints don't make me solve this. Hell, I can't solve the latest token so why am I even bothering lol :)
0 for difficulty as I'm poor at mental crap.
10 for fair I guess. EDIT: I do agree with Mitch for the age thing, but that makes me feel even more stupid considering I'm 21.
0 for fun since I hate these *Plays Rainbow Blitz*

age doesn't always have a direct correlation to intelligence. try and look at the puzzles objectively, instead of just whether YOU can do it (it's ok if you're not smart). except the fun question, which clearly is subjective.

Yeah well i lost half my IQ when a computer fell on my head.
Here's my cube solve. I couldn't get the camera working, so I have it on the gabbasoft program. It's a pretty good time for a virtual cube solve.

I'm not gonna have a score for this round. It will just be 0 forever.

I just posted some major major hints, take a look at those and try to see if you get anywhere first
Upon second glance, I really should have made this tournament graded by rank as opposed to raw skill goals. It's probably going to cause a lot of point-skewing because time rounds have smaller variance than skill rounds. I am going to see if there is a way to change all this to keep the ranks constant but with smaller variance to improve competition.
