Tournament Guide!

This guide will help you on making a good running tournament. READ THIS BEFORE STARTING ONE!!!

-------------------------------------------------------

Making A Tournament:

When you first start the tournament, it would be a very good idea to look at someone elses' successful tournament. It will show how other people have run it. If you want to start something unique though, it would be very nice to include the following.

1) Explain what the tournament is about. When it will start, or how many members it will take before it starts. Be sure you make clear how long each round is going to be.

2) You have to make sure you have a LEGIT prize. If you know you won't have the credits by the end, DON'T MAKE THE TOURNAMENT! If you really want to, decrease the prize value.

3) It's highly recommended to explain what type of skill you need to have in expert, intermediate, or whatever difficulty levels you have.*

4) Explain how you want the scores. PM'ing them, posting them in the thread, etc. This is a VERY good piece of information.

5) Make a list of all the people already in the tournament. Creating a line dividing the eliminated from the non-eliminated will be useful for your rounds later on.
http://i18.tinypic.com/6gtzrl0.jpg

6) Take some time to do some history on the players, and make sure none of them are too good for their place. Shashakiro can not join beginner.

7) ENTRY FEES ARE NOT ALLOWED!

8) Make sure you point out if any subscriber only option can be used or not, to make the tournament fair.

The First Round:
http://i16.tinypic.com/52onjev.png

1) Pick the songs! Make the songs big and clear to read! Some people may not see it with all the text.

2) Announce in a new post in your thread when the round has begun! Others will have no idea it has begun if you don't tell them.

3) Pick decent difficulty songs! If it's beginner, don't pick Vertex BETA! Make sure it has the decent amount of skill needed for the group.

4) NEVER DIFFICULTY JUMP! If the song is Standard, don't move to Very Difficult!.

5) Make sure to pick tiebreakers! Tiebreakers are important if people are fighting to stay in.

6) This is recommended: Alert the users who haven't submitted, excluding the first round. Some users are busy, and need a heads up. Always be nice, and remind them!

7) Sometimes extra time is needed in a round, but don't extend the date by too long. An extra night would always help a few people. Make sure you give them enough time to play the song!

The Final Round/The End:
http://i15.tinypic.com/669sk6q.jpg

1) The final round should get extra time if necessary. The final round decides the final 2, of course.

2) "I can't play it because I ????". Don't extend the date even longer. If it is going to be too long, eliminate the user by default.

3) When the tournament ends, send the users the credits. Don't try cheating them, Tass will know. If a tournament user does cheat credits, don't make a thread about it. PM an Administrator for further help.

-------------------------------------------------------

*You can make your tournament have any name for the divisions, but the most common are Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Experts.

Some of these rules vary for each and every person, but follow these rules, and you should make a fine tournament!

Good luck everyone!

Hey, nice thread. Any criticisms on my tournament?

I'm annoyed with losing, so after I build my credit count up some, I'm gonna try my luck with a tourney.

I've done them before with other games, so maybe I won't suck.

Hey, nice thread. Any criticisms on my tournament?

There are a couple, but no ones tournament is perfect. It IS your first. The last song was a bit of a difficulty jump, it was hard to find the current round with the other rounds still there, etc. :p

The next time you have another tournament, take screenshots of your first post in various stages in the tournament. People could look at your old ones to get an idea of a basic template, but it would get more attention here. I guess this was sort of covered in there, I'm not exactly 'alert' either, lol@Tass.

I'd like there to also be an emphasis that not all tournaments have to be based on PA skill, which a lot of us don't have. I really liked your first tournament, where everyone was struggling to get an FC. This is where things could get interesting, like a tournament where whoever has the best GA or AA goes on.

One more thing, for those who don't have spare thousands of credits, don't be afraid to use a lot less credits for prizes. This can also be creative, such as sticking the winner's names in the host's siggies, names in the custom title for subscribers, or even permanent sucking up to in places like the forums and in MP. If the players enter for free, don't be afraid to have 'worthless' prizes. Also, kinda mentioned up there. Ok, I'll stop talking.

Getting drunk during the week doesn't sound healthy, Tass. At least I wait 'till the weekend. ;) (Most of the time...)

I WOULD have token SS's, but my tourney is almost over. once it is over, I'll edit it and add some pics.

Tass, you can edit some parts in/out that are redundant I guess. I don't see anything TOO redundant. I repeat some things, but not too often. Enough to get the persons attention, lol.

Adding to your point about picking songs, I think hosts should be aware of the songs that are being played or have just been played in other tourneys, so that repetition of songs can be avoided, which can get kind of annoying for players.

True, but that's more of a personal thing. Some people like songs being played over and over, and some don't. It would be too much hassle for the tournament creators to look through every tourney, so I'll just keep it the way it is. Thanks anyway, though.

I am trying to do that. I keep setting up songs, then other people keep picking them right before that round starts.

7) ENTRY FEES ARE NOT ALLOWED!

What if the credits from the entry fee go into the prize pot?

They're simply not alowed. Everybody should be allowed in the tournament and donations are Optional. If you put a tournament with a fee, you probably will get either banned, either your thread will be destroyed or both.

It's fun to actually run a tournament. Sadly I would have started one already, but I just don't think I have enough credits for the tournament. Might tell people to make donations, but I need a big prize.

Well, when I'll be having enough credits, I'll start that very kickass FFR "Forums" Tournament, nothing about FFR or Arcade Games, all made up by myself.

For a VERY successful example of how to start, run, and maintain a tournament, view mine at:

http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz/showthread.php?t=82705&page=9

Once reading it, if you have any questions please feel free to ask. Also, the way I have presented my tourney isn't exactly the only way you can. You can do PvP, mental contests, etc. Be creative, make something new and exciting up. If you're having a hard time getting credits for it, just ask around, hell, that's all I did and look how people responded :)

Indeed. When I had first read this, I almost didn't join his tourney.

lol I have no clue why so many people donated him credits...he seems clueless and ignorant in general. Not to mention his thread title suggests he's the very first person to run a tournament on ffr.

i was just wondering if you are allowed to do tourneys with no prizes...except maybe having their names posted on the hosts profile or something....(i just rly want to start a tourney but for now, dont have enough credits)

also, if im allowed...would anyone actually be interested in joining...?

Breakdown16

Bolth Mann, you cannot run a tournament without any prizes.

Before you create a tournament, you must:

-Have a prize for the winner(s). If the prize will be credits, you must have enough credits on your own to give out a prize. Do not create a tournament and soley rely on donations to get you prize credits. ***If your tournament will have any FFR-related or cash prizes other than credits, ie. shirts, subscriptions, stickers, anything from the FFR Shop, the money must be sent to tasselfoot@gmail.com via paypal to be held in escrow until the tournament is over. Make sure you send a PM to Tasselfoot to let him know that you have sent it. He will then distribute the prizes to the necessary members.***

Copied from one of the stickies in this subforum. See here: http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz/showthread.php?t=92006

Additionally, you cannot start a tournament anyways, for you must have at least 100 posts without postwhoring.

-Have at least 100 posts (no postwhoring). This will ensure that you have been a part of the forums for enough time to understand them, and also that you know the community enough to be able to handle it. It's also a plus if you are known by most of the regulars of the forum. There may be some rare exceptions to this rule depending on the circumstances.

I don't understand... how exactly do tournaments work in the first place?
