View Full Version : Do we have the right to populate other planets?

lets say hypothetically its in the future and the us people need to populate another planet. However, the only way to do this would be to drastically alter the planet's atmosphere, terrain, and stuff (which in the process would kill off any native life forms). Do we, as humans, have the right to do any, all, or none of the following:

1) Populate and alter another planet with no life at all
2) Populate and alter another planet with single celled organisms and the like
3) Populate and alter another planet with intelligent life.

I personally think that we should adhere to number 1, although 2 and 3 are possible as we've done similar things on earth (colonize islands and places like that, and in the process destroy much of what is there).

BTW: i took this topic from another forum and i wanted to post it here to see what your responses are

1) Populate and alter another planet with no life at all

also, hunans are ailens. it takes 450 million years to a single cell organism to evolve into existence. the earth is like 400 million years old. dum dum dum!

So we have a right to do it based on what?

Well, according to us planets don't have rights because there inatimate objects so:

1) yes

And even if there was life, we probably wouldn't care about their rights:

2) yes
3) yes

The earth is about 4.5 billion years old. -_-

Definetely 1 and 2, not like anyone will get mad if we do. But for 3, I don't know maybe we could land on their planet and try to use sign language or something to explain that we need to live on their planet.

I think it's 1 and 2

Terraformation is a truth that we must look upon in the near future. And yes, it would probably kill the life forms on the planet, but hey, we have endangered species, right? We just make some more...

If a planet had intelligent life, they would probably try and kill the settlers. So what is the point of this? If others are there it would be better to leave them alone

Um.... I'm not answering this question, because i'm not a U.S Citizen, and since you guys apparently don't consider the facts that OTHER countries might need to colonize other planets as well. Fools.

aw spec and observe, please dont try to kill the thread pointlessly, contribute!

im trying to be nicer from now on... due to popular demand... =/

i think it depends on the intelligent life. and how we go about it.

also, how desperately do we need their planet.

maybe we could pay for it somehow. give them some beads.

sooo....one of your first posts in the critical thinking board...

Please do not compare the take over of alien planets to Samurai Sword video games ever again. I think you have much more interest in the game than in creating thoughts and principles when it comes to this.

and...back on topic...

I personally think aliens will be VERY different from us if we ever encountered them. They would probably live with a darwin philosophy and be the only species on their planet that is free to live for their own good. every animal on this planet fights other animals to survive except for humans. Chances that animals on other planets, intelligent or not will live this way as well.

I didn't know i was so literate. I feel so organized today... this is great! I can see how Spec gets a kick out of writing intelligently.

We've got a right to anything we damn well please with the other planets. I don't see any laws on the books regarding the rights of alien lives, nor do I see any interplanetary legislation that we have to follow. What matters is if we're met with resistance.

Oh, and Samurai Swords (Shogun) is pretty cool, but I'm an A&A man, myself.

Basically that one dude is right, we can do whatever the hell we please on other planets. We're (hopefully) not going to just invade other planets, and take over peoples land, but i mean, who gives a **** if there's animals or w/e there. Are we going to kill off all the animals on purpose? no. Is it the animals planet? **** no. So we can just go wherever we need, assuming we ever have an efficient way of getting there.

Observe: In reguards to your first post, I don't think even one post in this entire thread but yours specifies a specific country or group of countries.

In reguards to the posts saying that we can because there are no regulations stopping us, I view that as a very self-centered thing thinking that we as a species are so far superior to that of other species that we can simply do whatever the hell we want to another planet without thinking about what'll happen to the planet in the end.

If theres no life, then ya sure I could care less if we blow the thing up as long as it wouldn't effect other planets with living organisms. If there is non-intelligent life then thats a trickier subject. If we can do what we need to do on that planet (in this case live in it) without causing any side effects to the ecosystem then i don't see a reason why not to do it. However if there is intelligent life then living on the planet should be avoided at all costs.

NOTE: If the human species is in a dire situation and would be practically wiped out if habitation on a planet isn't possible, and the only viable planet has life in it then yes, we should do whatever it takes to habitat it. Sorry ET, but survival of the fittest comes first.

Omg man, we ARE dominant over certain things, so ****, why not live with them, its not like we purposely kill our animals and lesser species here, okay well we do, for food, but still. We preserve the planet as much as possible, or at least we try to.

No animal group better stop us from colonizing another planet, or i'll seriously smack them. Animals can't tell us no, unless they're crazy animals that kill us all. Face it, its not self centered. We have a right to live too. We're NOT going to purposely destroy other planets.

Right there man. The US people need to populate other planets? You either typo'd or just didn't even see that.

"Aw, don't want to hurt the little bunnies?"
(Mad props to those who know from what movie that quote came)

Please, we're humans. We lord ourselves over every other species on this planet; it's only natural that we think we're awesome because we've practically taken our species out of the giving end of the food chain. If there are other planets with life forms out there that have things we want, and we have the capability to get them, go for it. If we can take over an entire planet, that pretty much shows superiority right there.

Has anyone else taken this debate and applied it to imperialism here on earth? Would everyone who agrees with "our unconditional right to take what we want from other planets" condone a large nation conquering a spear-chucking African tribe just for the nearby diamond mine? Aside from the species being the same, the argument is identical. Also, it raises the discussion of whether or not you can have superiority/inferiority inside a single species. This is a topic I like to discuss...
