There is no purpose, we will never have a lasting affect on the universe, even if we did its still all going to start over (The expanding/deflating of the universe, big bang theory thingy.)

The purpose is to have fun, without hurting any others.

Our purpose is to reproduce. That's it. There's no other logical standpoint you can really take, just a religous one, and I think religion is bull****, so that's it.
Oh, and 42. (I'm waiting for someone to ask what that means).

why are we here... hmm, it was kind of mentioned before but i think it would depend on how you look at it... scientifically, our purpose is solely to reproduce to ensure the survival of our species... religiously (pending the religion) would be somehting along the line sof to learn a lesson or to proceed to another step in our existence... to try and gain understanding... there really is no right answer to this question, lol.

And if you don't, read the book.[/i]

Religiously would be to worship god.
tristia
December 28th, 2003, 12:14 AM
well, i would think that would depend on the religion and a persons own view of that religion... not all religions worship "god" or one god, or any god at all. some have a belief system, all sorts of things i cant even begin to venture into... might not always be to worship god, could be to better urself as a person for example, or to lead a good life in the eyes of your savior and such... not being religious myself, i dont know all that much about what religions do what so i cant get specific.

I made a philosophy essay (not for school, but because I like philosophy) about purpose. My idea was that our purpose IS purpose. We fulfil one purpose, then go around looking for another. You buy a toy you've always wanted. Then you're done.
Buy a movie, watch it. Then you're done. The only factor in life that defies all these 'purpose' rules is the idea of love. You're supposed find that purpose, fulfil it, and keep it. If someone's being shallow and always dumps girls a week later, he's not being a jerk. Philosophically speaking, he's being human.
Just my two pesos.

to live our life as fully as we can then go to heaven.
To some people, living your life as fully as you can could also take away the priveledge of going to heaven afterwards. Take this for example, your father dies from murder but the killer was never caught. You then set out to try to the find the killer, and get your revenge. When you finally find him, you kill him. Let me go back for 2 seconds, going to heaven is part of well...the 'rules' of the bible I guess. Killing is against that, wether it be for revenge or not. So therefor, if heaven really existed *meaning that hell did too* the man would probably end up in hell instead. But of course he doesn't know that because he THINKS he's doing the right thing. So after he gets his revenge, he thinks he's gotten what he's wanted most out of life, and thinks he's lived it to the 'fullest'

the thing drummerboy said
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
The answer to the question of life, the universe, and everything is 42.
It's actually a series of books, which are all good for the most part, but a few of them aren't so great.
If you like dry, British wit, I suggest you read them.

The purpose or meaning of life is to figure out what the purpose or meaning of life is. And since it is an endless cycle of questions....it will be never answered. So dont worry about it and breed.

No you should read 'The Hitchhiker's Guide' anyway. Such...great...books. Honestly. Betcha can't guess what the ultimate question is:
What is six times seven?
Also, a quote from the book (semi-quote, I don't have the book with me):
There is a theory that states that if we ever figured out what the Universe is and what exactly it is there for, it would immediately disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
There is another theory that states that this has already happened.

No, it wasn't really "what do you get when you mulitply six by seven" (which I believe was the exact question, but I could be wrong), because Arthur didn't really have the answer in his subconcious, because he wasn't really from earth.
I believe, I may have forgotten specifics.
But anyways, has anyone read the Kurt Vonnegut Jr. book called Cat's Cradle?
In that book, the main character's religion states that people are separated into different groups in order to fulfill God's purpose, but you don't find out what the actual purpose is until you die.
That's the religion, but from a non-religious standpoint, I think the meaning of life could be something similar.
Everybody might have a different purpose of fulfilling, in order to further the universe, or help some deity, or any number of things.

Religion has nothing to do with **** all about this. The only thing that counts if your own opinion. You either do,don't or your not sure whether you should believe it or not. You shouldn't be forced to believe or not to believe something just because your religion does or doesn't. Like im Catholic and I don't really believe in God or anything like that.

The only thing that counts if your own opinion.
From some, their opinion is that God has a meaning for all of us. So therefore religion has everything to do with the meaning of life.
