If you happen to enjoy this genre, here are a list of excellent authors:

Lee Child - Jack Reacher is the man. Up there with other kick-ass Jacks... Jack Bauer and Jack Bristow.

Dennis Lehane (the Patrick Kenzie novels, pre-Mystic River) - Kenzie is a PI with a sense of humor. Excellently written.

Jan Burke - Irene Kelly is a reporter who just can't stop getting into trouble. Luckily for her, husband Frank Harriman is a Homicide detective.

Greg Iles - Nanchez, Miss is a rough town to grow up in... plenty of things go wrong there. (Only about 50% of his novels are set there. The rest are just as good, if not better).

Stephen Hunter - Earl Swagger is a southern 50s man who gets mixed up fighting against gangsters, cuban lords, or the wrong side of the law. His son Bob Lee is a sharp-shooting ace with a long history in Vietnam and a knack for people trying to frame him.

James Swain - Tony Valentine used to work as an AC cop. Now that he's retired, he does freelance work for casinos around the world.

Robert Crais - Elvis Cole is another PI with a sense of humor. The only author who I haven't read every single book he(she) has written. Excellent mystery and lots of ass-kicking.

Anyone else have suggestions for excellent authors in this genre?

As starters, I'd recommend Killing Floor by Lee Child, Bones by Jan Burke, 24 Hours by Greg Iles, Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter.

The movie Hostage is based on the Robert Crais book... in case anyone has seen it.

No offense DJ... but I'm not taking reading advice from you.

What's that supposed to mean? I can read just fine. Since when did it become a stereotype that I'm a not bright? Sure...my Genre skills are a little messed up but that's because I'm 13. I've yet to learn diffrences of genres since I only learned the word last year. I learn more here than I do in school.

Edit* Just wait Tass until jtwg finally starts.

You and I have nothing in common... therefore I find it difficult to believe that we'd enjoy similar novels.

Besides the fact that you're 13. I was reading Goosebumps and Dragonlance and Star Wars when I was 13. Not award-winning mystery/suspense authors.

You and I have nothing in common...

Sure you do, you. You can both clutter up a decent suggestion thread with meaningless chatter.

I hadn't known you were looking for actual suggestions. That's why I asked if Luis Sachar counted for Holes. Star Wars isn't a book either. I didn't blurt out READ HOLES! HOLES! HOLES! I just asked if Luis Sachar's Holes counted.

Star Wars isn't a book? Just goes to show you how much you know. In addition to all three movies being made into books (which is not what I was referring to anyway), there is an entire series of books based around the characters from the Star Wars saga. Most of them take place after Episode 6. I'm fairly sure the most recent novels have been all about the children of Hans/Laia and Luke, when they are grown up. I read plenty of those novels when I was your age or a year or two older. In addition to the other 2 series that I mentioned.

Interjection:

Tass, you're being rude.

On topic:

I've never been very interested in the genre. I'm more of a fantasy/sci-fi guy.

I'm always rude... but much moreso to DJ than to most.

If you want to discuss fantasy/sci-fi, talk to Whorli. She sucks down a novel every day or two. While I have read some, mostly in HS, she has read 100x more in that genre than me.

Now Sci fi is a genre I'm into. I could go on for days

Mystery- I've read some Hercule Poirot(sp?) novels. Good stuff.

Suspense? I don't know if From a Buick 8(King) and Sphere(Crichton) count as suspense(it's more like sci-fi), but those two books are the creepiest I've read.

I'm not big on Mr. J-Park, and King doesn't do it for me either.

*shrugs*
