HOW TO GET SONGS ON TO STEPMANIA

I hope this will clear up all the topics saying that people need help on getting songs onto their StepMania. I have made step by step photos in attachments at the bottom.

[Step 1: Accessing the Folders] *corresponds to picture #1 + 2* - First, go to the StepMania General Folder, or :

C:\Program Files\StepMania CVS

Look down the list of folders. You should see one called "Songs". Open it.

Now you should be at :

C:\Program Files\StepMania CVS\Songs

[Step 2 : Opening the ZIP's] *corresponds to picture #3* - First, create a new folder for a category. I usually name it for the stepfile makers. (I put Arch's songs in a folder called "Arch0wl Songs") Or, to clear up confusion, you can simply name the folder "All Songs" to put every single one of your songs in. Now you should be at :

C:\Program Files\StepMania CVS\Songs\All Songs

Now, go find the ZIP to which contains all the neccessities. Every song MUST have : A .DWI file, (or a .SM file) and a .MP3 file. (or a .WAV file) To open the ZIP, just click 'Open' and it will start downloading. Now you should be in the ZIP Archive and you will see the DWI, MP3, and most of the time, several other images.

NOTE: If the .ZIP is linked from GeoCities, RIGHT CLICK the link and select 'Copy Shortcut' and paste that into the URL area.

[Step 3 : Extracting the Files] *corresponds to picture #4*

You should now be at :

C:\Program Files\StepMania CVS\Songs\All Songs

Create a folder for the name of the song you wish download and play on SM. (Ex. Afronova Primeval) You should now be at :

C:\Program Files\StepMania CVS\Songs\All Songs\Afronova Primeval

Now, extract each file into the Song Folder. (.MP3, .DWI, etc.)

Did you unzip the files into a folder under thes ongs folder?

When you can change where it unzips to, type:

c:\program files\stepmania\songs\etc

Still not working for me -.-
I have Stepmania 3.9 for the right version of computer. I downloaded the songs I want and unzipped them. I made sure all the right files were in the folders for the songs, and put the song's folders under the "Songs" category in the Stepmania file.
They still won't work for me.
So I went into options and selected "reload songs". Still nothing
(And don't say something like "shoot yourself if you can't get it to work" We're not all computer geniuses, and that's trolling. Have nothing useful and productive to say, shuddap.)
(I'm not sure if WinAmp will let me change where it unzips to, but I'll check up on that and see if it works then)

I figured out how to do it. Go into My Computer, click on the C drive, then program files, then StepMania, then songs. Make a mix (Your name Mix) as a folder. Take a song folder you want and insert it into that mix. So it should be like this... ex. Butterfly and blah mix

C:/Program Files/StepMania/Songs/blah mix/Butterfly/dwi, sm, bg banner, etc. for Butterfly

The folder 'Songs/MaxX Eternally Unlimited' contains music files.

This means that you have a music outside of a song folder.
All song folders must reside in a group folder. For example, 'Songs/DDR 4th Mix/B4U'.
See the StepMania readme for more info.

This means that you have MaxX Eternally Unlimited in C:/Program Files/StepMania/Songs/MaxX Eternally Unlimited/music stuff

You may also have it inside your mix, but it is also out there. Delete it out of Songs (not your mix), then it should work.

Song = Music that you listen to.

Simfile = Songs FOR StepMania that have steps.

Song =/= Simfile.

However, Simfile INCLUDES a Song.

My problem lies in something else.

I often try to download simfiles that aren't off stepmania.com and they end up transferring to Bittorent or Winrar. With both, I have trouble getting it into Stepmania. I've tried extracting, didn't work.

And I use 3.9, if that has anything to do with it. I do have CVS but I can't get ANY songs onto that, so I ditched the idea entirely.

WinACE makes things a hell of a lot easier so google winACE and it will archive all of your files once you download it and you only have to go thru all of the finding stepmania in your program files folder and all of that once and then it automatically stores the folder in its memory so you just have to find everything once :) hope that helped... oh and by the way winACE is free

I learned how to put them once when I first played StepMania.
Here's my story:

First, go to Bemanistyle or some other website, find the song that you want, download it, after it finishes, drag the folder out of the window and put it on your desktop, then, open the StepMania program folder, and click on songs, then make a new folder and put the song that you downloaded thats on your desktop and drag it into your song folder. You just learned how to put songs onto S.M.!

Im trying to grab step files off of the FFR simfile database, but they are compressed zip files (i think). Those cant be used in Stepmania. How do I convert them or otherwise make them playable in Stepmania? I dont care if it changes it to .sm (which i think has to be done) or it some other random method. It just has to be free and not too time consuming.

I can actually play No Life mode on Guitar (5-starred EVERY song on the first rockband on the ps2), Bass, and Mic. But on drums I can play ANY song on hard lol and i can beat half the songs on expert. to me, I find Everlong just like another Run To The Hills... One of the songs that give me trouble on drums is A Jagged Gorgeous Winter. Much less PainKiller lol. To me the hardest song on guitar is Peace Sells. I beat PainKiller on the first try and Peace Sells on like the fifth? o.O I've gotten all the flawless acheivements lol. (guitar and bass, That's what you get. Mic, What'cha want. Drums, Charlene (I'm right behind you)) Anyone with rockband 2 or guitar hero 3 that would like to play with me over Xbox live, add me. My GamerTag is R34P312. I try to.
But whenever I tried that, it didn't work.
So I opened Stepmania (I have 4.0 alpha),
and it said,
Fatal Error:
The folder "Songs/My Creations"appears to be a song folder. All song folders must reside in a group folder. For example, "Songs/Originals/My Song".

And I'm just confused as to what to do. :/

You need another folder inside that directory in order for the program to work. For example: Songs/My Creations/(Song).

The folder hierarchy is as such:

- "Songs" folder: all song-related stuff is added here
- "Group" folder: within the "Songs" folder you'll make a number of folders that designate as groups for individual songs. An example of such a folder: "DDR 5th Mix". In your case: "My Creations"
- individual songs folder: within each group folder are folders designated for each particular song you want to add. Each of these folders will typically include an audio file (e.g. .mp3), along with a .dwi and/or .sm file.

I think you may have simply forgotten that you needed to create group folders first before adding songs. See Dossar's example of a path. Hopefully you'll understand the organization a bit better.
