View Full Version : How many of you are musicians?

I tend to note that musicians seem to be better at keeping the beat than people who aren't, normally. I ask - how many of you are musicians? Garage band, high school or college band, drums for the fun of it, even some sort of DJ - it doesn't matter, do you have musical experience?

I played the piano for 8 years, trumpet for 4, and I am working on the Banjo. And seeing as I have a song on FFR I guess I could be considered musically talented. Although it takes no musically talent to make Electronic music.

Just kidding.

electronic takes much talent... keyboard playing alone is hard

oh yeas, by that i meant actuall recording and synth work, not just using Ejay and calling urself a musicial (i dunno which of the two categories you fall into, though.)

Just so you know Mega, most electronic producers spend weeks on their tracks. A huge amount of time is devoted to creating them.

technical skill shouldn't be compared to composing, since they are completely different. Composing is applying technical skills you've learned. Anyone can play an instrument, but not everyone can write good music.

And uh.. while we're listing.. Bass guitar for 9 years, guitar for about 5, drums for 6, banjo (rules!) , piano, harmonica, accordian, and whatever else i can get ahold of.

Hmmm... I've played the piano for 6 years, violin for 2 and I'm going to learn to play the guitar. :P

Just kidding.

I SO hope you are kidding.

Anyway, I played the trumpet for about 10 years and have been writing music (mostly electronic ;)) for a few years. I think being a musician gives you more experience with rhythm in general and therefore gives you a little of an edge when it comes to learning how to play rhythm-based games such as FFR and DDR well. But, FFR and DDR can also help you out musically. You can subdivide rhythms better when playing and are just in general more familiar with similar rhythms when they are used in the music you are performing.

BTW- Arch, Hyro

You can't really get better just by giving advice.. I used to think I could, but I only got better by practice

does singing count? ive been singing for six years and yes that does require SOME talent, maybe not as much as some of u guys that play more difficult instruments but yeah it takes a little. but i can definitely keep a beat *sounds of that stupid dinking rythym machine echo thru her head* hehehe

heh.. SUper is right.. I have a mute button in my mind that can make melodies vanish except what I want to hear, or hear a song and then add in my own parts on top of it, taking away those i don't want. etc. I don't think normal people can do this, too. it comes probably from writing so much music.

Arch0wl's right, You just gotta play. The only advice I can give you is to play different kinds of songs. Like train your hand to do every single kind of arrowbeat situation....It's hard to explain. Just play wide varieties of songs, you're never going to get as good as us if you just place FFR, there's not enough songs.

I'm on my fourth year of piano, fifth year of sax/bari sax/tenor sax, and my second year working on electronic music. I don't have the best programs for electronic but all well.

Oh, and I also DJ at some parties around my area.

dude, i said i did, but time to brag :D :D

I have my 1982 musicman stringray bass in a sweet sunburst. His name is Rufius. Then I have a custom jazz bass with EMG pick ups and a gotoh bridge with a P bass neck. That's Phil. Then there's Noto, which is a 30 year old P bass from japan made by a company called Tokai, which wanted to rival fender but went under. I blew the electronics on it long ago and had to rewire it, so there's volume but no tone. Hence, NoTo. Get it?

And and...there's Michelle, my acoustic Martin DM. There's also the Kingston, which is just an kingston acoustic, like 30 years old too. It has nice bass pick up, Michelle is rather bright but full in tone. And uh.. there's shithead, which is a kramer electric with rose locks.. And then there is Wolfe, which is an 1974 american stratocaster.

Har... This is why I am broke. I buy expensive guitars.

Did you write Michelle's Song about your Guitar? Wait...nevermind...Michelle must be a special person then...

And I'm pretty sure they've found enough musicians.

In band, I play the Baritone. As far as other music goes, I primarily write it as a hobby, but I'm trying to get some material to my high school band.

edit: Well, someone bumped the thread. I knew something was up when I saw Arch0wl's name.

I dunno about that first statement, but I play violin which is a very difficult instrument to play at my level (an advanced high school player..), but it seems to help that I've played that and piano before.

We had a music class in elementary school that probably helped when I picked up the instrument in sixth grade.

Can't wait until the marching season = D.
