i don't know what I did, but I accidentally pressed something, or did something to my laptop. It's brand new, and it's supposed to do that thing where when you hold the cursor over the window, it shows a smaller version of it, and it's not. Also, the bottom and top of my Windows Media Player is white, and the shortcut next to the Start button, the "Switch between windows" one, instead of doing the 3D models of all open browsers, this little box pops up instead. Anybody have a solution? It's nothing major, but I liked it how it was.

I think you turned off your aero visual style and switched to basic.
EDIT: Or theirs a program that doesn't support it.

try using this to force aero theme

http://thevistaforums.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=1407

also make sure you have the color set to 32bit and not 16 bit. since aero requires 32bit you might have accidentally switched to 16bit and thats why it isnt showing

You don't download anything to install Aero, especially not from some site that isn't Microsoft...it comes with Home Premium and above...

Did you do the little performance index thingy Vista has? The Windows Experience Index? I think if you score low enough on that it disables Aero.

Try updating your video card's drivers.

but how does his rating go down if he's had it
anyway 'aero' should go here x:\Windows\Resources\Themes
http://www.mediafire.com/file/njmgvhjjmtv/Aero.rar

NFD
04-9-2009, 11:29 PM
How do I get to the x drive?

Pyroshock
04-9-2009, 11:33 PM
His rating wouldn't have gone down, it was just be the first time he's run it if that is indeed the problem.

NFD
04-9-2009, 11:34 PM
Look, I may have pressed something on my keyboard, it's an Asus.

Pyroshock
04-9-2009, 11:36 PM
Idk if any key combination could have disabled Aero

X drive is whatever your OS is installed on, probably C:

Just go to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes and see if Aero stuff is still there

NFD
04-9-2009, 11:40 PM
Still can't find it. Aero is sitting on my desktop. I clicked one of the icons, the Windows Visual Style one, and it took me to the Appearance Settings screen, with Aero still not on the list.

Pyroshock
04-9-2009, 11:42 PM
I'm pretty sure it has to be in the C:\Windows\Resources\Themes folder to show up in the list

NFD
04-9-2009, 11:43 PM
........I went to that file, and Aero was there.

Pyroshock
04-9-2009, 11:44 PM
Can you right click on Computer on the Start Menu and choose Properties, and tell me if it says anything under System next to Rating

Also while you're there click on Device Manager, go to the Display Adapter, and look for the latest drivers for your graphics card.

NFD
04-9-2009, 11:45 PM
It says I'm unrated.

Under Display Adapters it says:

NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS
This device is working properly.

Pyroshock
04-9-2009, 11:49 PM
Ok well go to http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_notebook_winvista_179.48_beta.html and download and install the driver, then try running the rating thing

If that doesn't work I'm out of ideas

NFD
04-9-2009, 11:51 PM
But, what did I do? I had Aero since Tuesday, and it just disappeared?

Also how do I install the driver.

Pyroshock
04-9-2009, 11:52 PM
No clue haha

Nothing like that's ever happened to me

Oh and open start and type Services into the search bar and press enter, then look to see if the services Desktop Windows Manager and Themes are started

Just install the driver by running the application that you download from that site

NFD

Damn I remember when this happened to me.

...

Try setting the theme to windows vista?

*forgot

the theme is already on windows vista but the appearance isn't on aero

Professor Raine
04-10-2009, 02:01 AM
Well I remember it being a rather trivial and minute thing that I stumbled upon. So yeah, maybe if you just ignore it for a while, it'll end up getting fixed by accident.

what i posted was something that forces the computer to use aero regardless of the setting

It seriously sounds like you are running Vista Basic. It doesn't come with Aero and it disables any way to select it. If you want it you're going to have to upgrade to home premium.

install windows 7 on it. its so much better. or reinstall vista.

Some programs disable Aero.

One of the video players I use does it whenever you play a video. It's an unnecessary performance thing.
