The top three recreational drugs in the U.S. are Alcohol, Tobacco, and Marijuana. Every year Alcohol kills about 110,640 people. Every year Tobacco kills about 430,700 people. Every year Marijuana kills 0 people. Not one person has ever died do to the toxins in marijuana. In fact, Marijuana actually helps those in pain. Now, I am not saying marijuana is good, in fact, I hate it. But why is it that Marijuana is illegal and Alcohol and Tobacco are not? Why is that you never hear of the good things Marijuana has done for people battling with Cancer or Leukemia, how it eases the pain of the treatments? Why is it that no one ever compares the current "Drug War" with the Prohibition of the 1920s? How similar the gang warfare and blackmarket of the 1920s is almost exactly the same as it is now only more deadly these days? |

Alcohol and Tobacco have been around for a really long time, have become widespread, are gigantic industries, and are parts of big cultures. Marijuana and other drugs came about only recently (and those around for longer were more foreign or part of a small, underground culture) and we saw the immediately negative effects of it rather quickly. Thus, we tried to keep it out of our culture due to its bad influences. I'm sure that if we just now discovered alcohol and its intoxicating effects, we'd do the same for it, but for the reasons I listed above, we didn't. Pretty much the same would go for tobacco, though its deadly effects would take longer to notice.
We don't really compare the current drug war to prohibition because (besides the fact that we want to forget prohibition =) ) because of how widespread bootlegging and organized crime was back then, while it's still small now with marijuana. That goes back to alcohol being part of our culture. Too many people wanted alcohol; not nearly as many want marijuana. --Guido http://andy.mikee385.com/ |

Jewpin has a good point. Marijuana has killed people though, it changes how u thinks, makes u act differently. It effects some peopel differently than others, and it can kill.
If jane wasnt illegal then everyone would use it all the time and it would just crazy. It would be currency. If it truly doesn't harm the body like cigs and alcohol do then people would have no real reason to refrain from using it. Your state of mind during the use of jane is unstable and illogical. The world wouldn't function if everyone used it.

"it changes how u thinks, makes u act differently. It effects some peopel differently than others, and it can kill."
So can alcohol. But Marijuana by itself has never killed anyone, it is always the result of irresponsiblity. "...illegal then everyone would use it all the time" Well, same goes for Alcohol, but people dont usually. And besides, those who smoking do it all the time. I know. "Your state of mind during the use of jane is unstable and illogical" Same with alcohol. "The world wouldn't function if everyone used it." Same with alcohol. "because of how widespread bootlegging and organized crime was back then, while it's still small now with marijuana." Marijuana is not small (nor are other drugs). I know atleast 45 different people I could buy some weed off of. |

First, Jewpin is off a bit. People do die from marijuana. It has been blamed as a factor in car accidents (I think this is bull though) and some drug dealers get killed over it. I've also heard stories of allergic reactions and the old heroin laced joints stories.
I think Jam930 is pushing it a little bit. I smoked pot every day for 2 1/2 years, and now I refuse to touch it. People get stoned if they want, there is nothing stopping them. A guy at work today was high. When I was in high school, it was easier to get weed than it was to get alcohol, a legal substance. Think of it this way. Make it legal, and every joint that is sold is taxed. This money can go into drug treatment and education programs which have been proven to reduce drug abuse. This takes the money out of the hands of organized crime and makes it harder for kids to get. Instead of having to go to a seedy crack dealers house to score a 20 bag when your guy is out of town, you go to the store and pick up a hygenically sealed baggy made in a factory where there are health codes, not cut and dried in somebody's basement. Drugs are never going to go away. So we might as well embrace them and do everything we can to make the drugs safe for the people stupid enough to use them. Thank you, and good night. *applause, walks off stage* |

I think all three are complete wastes of life... and all have problems... and all should be banned... At least in public. Do whatever you want in your own home... but dont smoke in front of me, dont drink around me, and sure as hell dont even show me weed... cause i will take a crap in it.
Its all crap, its all drugs, and its all for people who are too retarded to find entertainment on their own. |

I agree with SUSUGAM. Drugs are stupid. I have lost many friendships over it. But I do think weed should be legal and taxed. I would much rather see someone smoking a joint than a cig or drinking.
"First, Jewpin is off a bit. People do die from marijuana. It has been blamed as a factor in car accidents (I think this is bull though) and some drug dealers get killed over it. I've also heard stories of allergic reactions and the old heroin laced joints stories." Once again, marijuana by itself has never caused a death. And it doesnt even make the top 3 causes of car accidents. |

I have a question: can you become high off of marijuana smoke? (secondhand highness)
If so, I don't want anyone anywhere near me smoking something like that. |

Okay, I did some research and I have a list of sideffects from marijuana.
Short term effects: - Sleepiness - Difficulty keeping track of time, impaired or reduced short-term memory - Reduced ability to perform tasks requiring concentration and coordination, such as driving a car - Increased heart rate - Potential cardiac dangers for those with preexisting heart disease - Bloodshot eyes - Dry mouth and throat - Decreased social inhibitions - Paranoia, hallucinations - Impaired or reduced short-term memory - Impaired or reduced comprehension - Altered motivation and cognition, making the acquisition of new information difficult - Paranoia - Psychological dependence - Impairments in learning, memory, perception, and judgment - difficulty speaking, listening effectively, thinking, retaining knowledge, problem solving, and forming concepts - Intense anxiety or panic attacks - Fetal Marijuana Syndrome in babies I got all this from http://www.marijuanaaddiction.info/e...-marijuana.htm. There is a lot more there, and you should read it. |

good stuff drac. Jewpin, i think cigs are the worst. then alcohol. then jane. you're right about how if they're going to keep cigs and alcohol legal, they should at least make jane legal or make them all illegal.

Cigs are the worst, because they have no redeeming qualities.
Alcohol - can be decent in moderation, even though I don't drink. If you don't know when to say when though, it will be unpleasant. Marijuana - Bad idea to get started on it, IMHO. Whenever you rely on something for pleasure you build a tolerance for it, so that it's harder to be happy without it. Note for example that people who are/have been sexually active become depressed without sex. Thus, marijuana is psychologically addictive, even if it may not be physically addictive. And it does kill brain cells. The "short term" effects Drac listed become long-term affects as the user uses it more. |

Aye, and guns by themselves have never killed anyone, it is always the result of irresponsibility [with the gun]. |

drac, if people used weed carefully, there would be no deaths from it. your completely wrong about the gun thing. it takes a person to want to kill someone with a gun to do it. when ur smoking weed, you dont get in a car and drive and say "hm, i wanna kill myself!" then get into a car accident. weed is fine if you smoke while just chillin somewhere like on the beach or some shit like that, and its not exceptable to drive when ur high. but i think it would be ok to have marijuana legal if it was only sold in moderation, i duno how they would do it but whatever i think it should be legal,.

Jewpin really raises a good point. I think that the only reason why Tobacco is legal in itself is that we were using it for hundreds of years before we figured out that it kills you. And by this time the tobacco industry is too powerful to be touched, so we have to rely on people to stop them. As for Alcohol...well, people will always abuse things. I mean hell, people take a simple thing like glue and abuse it, use it to get high. But alcohol isn't quite as bad. You don't get addicted to alcohol as fast as you do drugs or tobacco, and it won't necessarily kill you if you are. Now, neither will tobacco, but the risk is much greater.
The biggest reason I think we should stop the drug war is the fact that we're failing. We lose dozens of valuable officers fighting it, and we're losing. It's just like Prohibition all over again, except this time we're more stubborn and refuse to accept the fact that we cannot stop Americans from doing what we want to do. We in America tend to have a certain...ignorance, for rules. We fought the British when we didn't like their rule. We fought each other when we didn't like the current rules. We fought Vietnam when they threatened to change the rules that we like. We fought Saddam when he wouldn't conform to our rules. Pattern? And yes, I realized I digressed up there...it was a good point, though. |

yeah, as that article says Marijuana doesn't have a much bad influence on the human body
compared to other drugs, cigs, or alcohol. and according to some reports Marijuana doesn't have both physical and psychic dependence. It's conditionally legal in the Netherlands. But some people think Marijuana would cause more crimes because of its pharmacologic actions like what Drac wrote and it would do harm to the society, so it's illegal in most countries. |

Emccky, you don't have to want to kill someone to kill them with a gun. If your little kid kills himself by accident because you made the bad judgement to leave your gun on the floor, it is the same as killing your kid with the car by accident because you made the bad judgement of driving while high. The only difference could be that Marijuana screws with your judgement and makes it easier to make bad judgements, guns don't. Which is more dangerous?
