If the human brain does indeed have boundaries (referring to possibilities, not structure), I believe that they will never be reached. This thread has an interesting sub-category: Is mind over matter possible? A simple form of mind over matter, which I think to be highly possible, is ignoring pain. I don't mean pretending that something doesn't hurt, I mean completely manually shutting down the part of your brain that detects feeling, temporarily. |

The funny part is that nobody pounced on that Zamiax guy who actually bumped the thread, for asking if we know what makes the mind tick (he does). He does?! Surely he should educate all of us morons then, he can start with the global neurology and psychology communities I guess.

Mind over matter-specifically, pain tolerance.
I forget the specifics about this, and I've since sold my textbook, but with pain specifically, you can loosely divide it into 2 pathways, one of which ends up first going to cerebral cortex, the outer layers of the brain which is basically involved in all higher functioning things we do, and then goes through the periaquiductal gray to amygdala. The other just goes to the PAG and then amygdala. We can hypothesize that people who have control over the pain they feel are using this secondary, cortical pathway to over-ride the lower-functioning one. This particular power of mind-over-matter is likely directly linked to (a) physiological pathway(s), and does not indicate whatsoever that the mind can do telekinesis or do ESP. The physiological aspect of pain is far from being understood fully though. Also, the sensation of pain versus tactile sensation are physiologically distinct, from where in the brain the final perception takes place, right down to the neuronal level where the signal originates. Well, the human mind is capable of many great tasks for we are highly evolved life forms. I read this somewhere that we only use 4% of our brain for thinking, and that genius' use 5-6%. The rest is used to help our body function - i'm pretty sure a fair chunk of that is un-used. Just imagine what we're capable of if we could tap into that other 20%?

Don't confuse "At a time" for "Total" Not all of our brain is actively doing things at any given moment, but it all has uses. |

Try reading other posts before responding Flesh Field.
Also, that only 5% or something of a brain is ever used it completely and utterly perposterous. During development, there's a whole lotta trimming of extra and unused neurons and connections. It would make no sense to have sections of brain exist which have no function, unless they're vestigial parts. Also, 4% plus 20% = 24%. |

i mostly agree with guido.
the human brain is a powerful tool, and used effectively can bring people to their knees. now on a different track i believe things like telekinesis and pyrokinesis are complete works of fiction and if they actually had proof of it, it false. people like horse whisperers and dog whisperers are completely false too. they simply stroke the animal to make it calm down and use any background stuff given to fabricate a story. the brain is a powerful organ indeed, but something people say about it are just plain wrong. (also i believe we do use only 10% of our brains becuz look at the Egyptians. They built the pyramids so well not even a sheet of paper can fit between the stones. With the technology back then, I think that is pretty good proof. If they can be that precise, how come we cannot figure out how they were so precise.) |

All you need to 'live' technically is your brainstem actually, although what you're getting at is very true. You'd lose most functions and anything that'd make you more than a vegetable.
