Default The Key to Artistic Success: STRUCTURE!!!

OK, I decided that I would explain a very simple and almost self-explanatory concept which I think every artist should learn. You need to know this stuff before you are able to draw anything properly. THEY'RE VERY USEFUL!!!

Here is a complicated-looking picture of Lucia, Hannon, and Rina from Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch that I grabbed from some website. A novice trying to copy-draw this might only draw the final contour lines, only to result in a crappy, disproportional mess.

MOST EXPERIENCED ARTISTS DO NOT START BY DRAWING THE LINES YOU SEE IN A FINISHED WORK.

Here are the basic structure shapes that make up each girl's body. The artist of this picture most likely drew something like this BEFORE she started on the details.

Zack: Shut up. It's funny.

The key to one's artistic success is one's own creativity: Something that can only be taught by oneself and no other

That's not just artistic success: creativity is present in writing, movies, music, nearly everything.

You don't think one can be artistic through their scripts, music, and writings as well as actual concrete Art?

Thats not what I meant.

When I say art, I usually mean visual art.

Music, writing and scripts are other forms of art. You can be artistic through them, of course, but in this case, I am referring to visual art.

Creativity is not necessarily coming up with entirely new concepts.

Personally, I think creativity is taking your ideas, thoughts, experiences, other's inspiring ideas, and other crap and balloon-animal-twist them into something you can call yours.

~*~

For example, that boy in my avatar with the cute little nipple is my character Jaku from Meiloyn's Saga (my account is named afer the main character). He is supposed to be cute and appear younger than he really does. By itself, this isn't that original of an idea. But if I combine all the other unoriginal ideas that make Jaku, such as having grown up in a country based off of Japan, been raised by an abusive family, having blonde hair and blue eyes, sucking at physical fighting, and having hidden talents in magic, the unoriginality of the idea is overlooked. You aren't going to meet many characters with this combination.

In other words, the first thing that comes to your head.

Not necessarily, though most of my ideas do start that way.

Ideas are very prone to changing and developing over time, whether you want it to or not. That's why I like letting a story sit out in the sun for a long while before I start to write it.

For example, Jaku started out much taller, and appeared just as most kids his age were to appear. He was also older. He wasn't bad in physical activity, though he wsn't very good at using weapons properly. He was also very strong and wielded a heavyblade.

I later realised that he had to contrast with Meiloyn, so I made him smaller and weaker, and replaced his blade with a staff. He also became more skilled with magic. Small, frail, human Jaku now contrasts well with strong, protective, devil Meiloyn.

The thread should have ended right there.

Creativity is not giving a rip about what others say and simply enjoy making art and doing what you're doing. Have you ever seen a stressed successful artist? No, because they know for a fact that if they put what they enjoy into making the actual art itself, there's easily more who will enjoy it.

A key to an artists success is to be happy with his or her own work. I learned that one the hard way.

Structure is good while you are learning. After that, what is commonly seen as acceptable should not hinder you in your art. After all, doing something already mainstream is no big deal, it's doing something no one has ever done before that's going to get you noticed.

Why are people nitpicking over the wording of the title? The point of the thread is that drawing in basic form shapes before starting a drawing supposedly gives you a more believable and realistic final product.

And I would disagree. Many people who draw can create the illusion of form without doing rough work first. I'm not one, personally, but many of my friends who are in a completely separate league from me are able to skip that step.

As far as looking realistic, with the anime style in paticular, shading is much more key to the "success" you're alluding to than rough shapes are.

Hmm... I don't mean to knock or anything, but based on the first post and what the title of the topic, I think that the key to a successful artist works goes back to the basics (principles of design, elements of design, etc.). Without the basics there is no success because it is not effective. This topic is FAR too deep to go into. An artbook might help.
