We have absolutely no way of knowing what comes after life... so people will choose to believe whatever works best for them.
For many it means this is it, and after this there is nothing. This works because it's plausible and makes sense within our current perception of reality. For others it means believing in heaven or hell, because they need a reason to motivate them to be good people in life, find it comforting to know that there are things to look forward to after life, etc. Here is a notable quote from House! House: "I choose to believe that the white light people sometimes see, visions this patient saw, they're all just chemical reactions that take place when the brain shuts down." Foreman: "You choose to believe that?" House: "There's no conclusive science. My choice has no practical relevance to my life, so I choose the outcome I find more comforting." Cameron: "You find it more comforting to believe that this is it?" House: "I find it more comforting to believe that all this isn't simply a test." There you have it.

The brain, starved for oxygen (assuming other vital systems are what resulted in death and not brain damaged) slowly stresses out and progressively shuts down, converting to anaerobic processes until it runs out of fuel. The neurons fire rapidly and what we call consciousness experiences rapid shifts into things we probably never experienced, and then we die and depending on where our body is left or how it is treated its elements return to the world in some way.

I guess I take a more logical, scientific stance on the matter rather than simply believing what I want to happen in the afterlife. As a general rule of thumb, things that sound too good to be true usually are.
So when you die, your brain no longer functions, and your consciousness ceases to exist, unaware of your existance or that you ever did exist. You have been erased as far as you are concerned. The reality you percieve comes into existance as you know it primarily because your cortex is working through electrical systems to make sense of the things around you. Why is it you think, for example, a person that has had brain damage seems to become someone else? Because they are someone else, as your brain defines your existance and makes you what you are. Saying that you somehow still exist once those connections no longer work relys too heavily on magic for me to take seriously. It is also too human of an approach to the problem; of course we don't want to die, as self actualizing, meaning-creating animals. We want so badly to be permanent that we ignore that our impermanence makes us human.

I have already done some reading on the topic. I havn't read that book specifically but it doesn't matter.
I don't see how it's relevant. I realize the body can be restarted. What point are you trying to make in relation to my views? >_> There's nothing magical involved in coming back to live from 'clinical death' or seeing things while being clinically dead. Why? Because you might not actually be dead. Clinical death does not equal death. Really, clinical death is a human term to describe vital signs whereas death itself is a process.

Repost from old thread.
We are but strangers in this world, once you die. You cease to exist and self awareness of being self aware will come anew it wont be you but self awareness of your new self. Chances are very low that new consciousness will be born on earth. Expect to sort of wander around the whole universe every time you die. |

I'm going to Marioville when I die.
But seriously, I don't care. I probably should, but you just can't tell where you're going to go. I'm almost positive that you'll just be a body decomposing somewhere -if you weren't cremated.

I beleive that all life is a test... When someone dies, they are judged based on the decisions they made during their life...

Since this is critical thinking, please explain the concept of one's mental self existing outside of their physical embodiment and the purpose of the brain, if it is not the same as what is considered a soul.

Well, There's no way im going to be able to explain why I beleive this, but Im beleive once you die your soul comes out of your body and wonders untill Christ comes back. after judgment, your either placed in Heaven, or placed in Hell. This idea is conceived after one considers the thoery of Evolution. I, for one, beleive in a supreme Being, so believing what this Being said in the Bible makes sense to me. (KJV1611 Bible, I dont settle for less)
There's muched more to the process then that, though, if you really want to know then PM me. Otherwise, count me for the Heaven vs Hell group Im really concered for you guys who say "hell sounds great". Im praying for yall. |

That brings me to another question. If the universe exists because a supreme being created it, then how did this supreme being come to exist?

Of course we dont know how the Being become. (but then we only use 10% of are brains so that makes sense
) The way I look at it, we didnt know how babies were made or how sex works untill we're told by our perents, This Being simply doesnt think it's time to explain. Same way our perenting system works (unless your moms a whore or somthing, THEN you probably know from a young age...) |
