Why the are some drugs illegal? Would it do better for prohibition to be abolished? Personally I see more arguments for prohibition outweighing the ones against it.
-What you do with your own body should be your own damn business, and not interfered with by the government. It is a victimless crime. -Prohibition does more harm than good. Stigmans attatched to convictions can prevent employment and education. -Making drugs illegal just romanticizes them. They are the forbidden fruit, which is temtacious. -The current drug war budget is somewhere around $30 billion dollars. This doesen't include the half million prisoners incarcerated for prohibition charges. It's estimated that taxes could be reduced by one-third if the government decriminalized JUST marijuana. -When has there been a death reported by cannabis?? There hasn't been one in the last 100 years. -Two other LEGAL drugs have have been the cause of half a million deaths in the u.s. alone: around 480,000 from tobacco and 80,000 from alcohol. Although these make up 20% of annual deaths in the U.S. and preventable by prohibition, it shows inconsistancy to reduce harm, and laws themselves. Why is these legal, and marijuana not? -Prohibiting drugs makes the market for them to inflate. This high cost is more likely to make the dealer to commit crimes to make money for more expensive drugs. -"Defendants convicted of selling crack cocaine receive equal sentences to those convicted of selling 100 times the same amount of powder cocaine." I smell racism. The majority selling crack are poor and black, while those selling cocaine are not. -Often times illegal drugs are purchased in the underground market. Drugs are cut with substances to increase supply, sale potential, ptrofit, or user addiction. "This can be dangerous as even though numerous illegal drugs have very low toxicity levels (low potential for overdose) and low addiction potential. Their safety status can be altered dramatically if they contain other chemicals the buyer is unaware of. This can increase the potential for unexpected effects, overdoses, and drug dependence. For instance, tablets sold as MDMA have commonly been found to contain methamphetamine as the primary active ingredient or include methamphetamine in addition to other drugs.[17]methamphetamine has much higher comparative addictive potential than MDMA, and a higher risk of overdose as demonstrated by its LD50s." Hmm -The prohibition of drugs have caused a major block to research. This can limit the amount of information on drugs, beneficial to the user. If you would like where i got my sources, just message me. : ) |

Believe me, I've heard all the arguments and I completely agree. Certain drugs should be legalized. It'd empty prisons, free up the judicial system, save us billions of dollars annually, and reduce crime rate.
It's a win/win/win/win/win/win/win situation. In case you didn't know, Marijuana is legal in Alaska and Oregon. |

The problem with legalizing it is that 75% of America's teens would jump all over the suddenly legal drugs. It would be like growing up in the 60s again. Everything would be about rebellion, and no one would get anywhere.

Last I checked, the figure was $26 billion that would be saved per year on law enforcement and opportunity cost on marijuana alone.
And, before anyone mentions it, there would be absolutely NO benefit from taxing it. Sure, taxes make revenue for the government but they are an equal cost to the people who pay them, which cancels everything out (if we don't count the costs of filing taxes etc.). Prohibition is simply a burden on the free-market. I believe you know how I feel about that. Q |

I think marijuana should be legalized but not any other drugs. Marijuana is no more harmful than alcohol, it was merely scapegoated as a reason for the increase in crime rates way back in the day. Other drugs like crack/cocaine, heroine, meth, should stay illegal because they are highly addictive and really do destroy your life fast. Trust me, a friend of my dads became addicted to crack and within 5 years his heart stopped working almost completely, and he died in his 40's. Marijuana however is better for you than cigarettes. It doesn't cause lung cancer though it does still destroy the lungs because of the smoke, but it is for the most part not addictive (i've never heard of anyone addicted to marijuana), yet cigarettes are highly addictive and cause cancer. Did you know marijuana actually supresses the gene we believe to cause cancer?

I can't find a source =/
I know it is but I don't know where I saw it. It's been years since I went to Alaska. But honestly, I know it when I see it, and the guy was rolling one in broad daylight on the side of a major street outside of a mall. I honestly cannot imagine anyone doing this if it were illegal. Ah, try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabi..._United_States Quote:

I agree with everyone in this thread with the decreased crime rate and money saving issues. But, that means that more kids will be have accessibility to drugs, and that means overdosing because they're idiots, thus more death. It would be a perfect plan if everyone had a little bit more common sense.

Marijuana should be legalized on the same terms as Alcohol or Tobacco so it will be treated by kids with the same amount of respect as either one of those.

I'm almost afraid to post this.... but I disagree. First of all if they DID legalize it, there'd have to be an age limit. Age limit or no age limit, legalizing it would make it that much easier to obtain. Take a school, sort out the kids that do drugs and those that don't. What type of mental image do you get? I would understand it being legalized if there was no way for kids to obtain it, but this would only make it way way easier. I can see a guy coming home from work and getting high instead of getting drunk, but for the sake of the teens, I say no.
Also, whoever said OD, yeah, that.

Well, if they do legalize it, they'll obviously treat it just like they treat alcohol or tobacco. 21 / 18 to buy / use. Get caught on the influence in places you shouldn't be, get arrested (this is more or less for alcohol with regards to drinking and driving).
If they legalize it, I say 18 to buy or use and only at home or in bars or places designed for it. They have such places in European countries and they have no problems with abuse. |

It's stupid people like you two that make me want MJ to still be illegal simply because it's impossible to persecute stupid people for just being stupid, and while there are some very, very stupid non-stoner/druggies/future AA members, at least they don't run around bragging about how ****ed up they are, how ****ed up they're going to get, or how ****ed up they were last weekend. Idiocy.

[quote=MalReynolds;1029893]Brilliant. You show that you're a responsible enough person to take charge by posting how ****ed up you are on drugs which are illegal and alcohol (which is still illegal) to you. Good show, chap.
So Mal, what exactly are you talking about "taking charge". And i wasnt exactly bragging, I was just having a good time, and posted the truth about my condition, and legalization. Now that I think about it, do you just float around these forums all day and night, looking for someone to criticize, because all of the post's I have seen you write do just that. Why dont you go out and try having some fun, instead of calling me irresponsible.... which i guess in your definition is posting the truth. Cmon CHAP, loosen up a bit. And what does it matter if it is illegal or not? Im not harming a damn thing, so it doesen't matter. Im done with this long post. |
