Default To debate religion or not, that is the question

On the vast majority of boards I go to, religious debates, even ones meant in good nature, are locked immediately because they inevitably result in a flame war every time.

From what I've seen here on FFR, I agree.

I vote we make a new rule that bans the discussing of religious topics. I think a friendly environment is more conductive to better thinking than one where every topic is completely open for discussion. All I ever see anymore are people going "UR STUPID" the moment someone professes, even if just to state their opinion, that they believe in a higher power, and then the inevitable "NO UR STUPID" response from the other person. Frankly, it's pointless and needless bickering that breeds ill-will between people who would otherwise be amiable toward one another.

I think religion needs to stop being such an impossible to discuss topic. People need to stop being immature, grow up a little and discuss and bring up points rather than bicker and fight and take every ounce of things said personally.

Obviously this isn't going to happen, so banning all religious topics is a quick fix.

I just think it's kind of sad when you have to result to this kind of thing.

They're practically banned here so long as Tass has an eye on this forum.

Really, we just watch them extra closely and the first slip-up gets them locked.

True dat.

You can't really debate religion anyway. You can try, but it will always end up something like this:

Atheist brings up points why religion can't be true. Religious person says "oh well I have faith."

There is no debating to it. It's just one side bringing things up in attempt to disprove and the other side saying that it doesn't matter because they have faith.

An even more laughable outcome is when the religious person actually tries to use science to prove things from the bible. I'm sure that we all remember the "smart squad [assemble]" thread, so I won't even bother bringing up specific details.

I recall such a rule being enforced when I first joined FFR. It seems to not be enforced anymore, or it was removed at some time.

Religion CAN be debated without problem, it's just nigh impossible here on FFR, especially with some people like Izzy, who actually IS incapable of debating it rationally.

As for the rule "not being enforced", we just haven't had many religion threads lately, and those that did exist bore the warnings of the moderation.

Welcome to a website where the average poster is 14 and has no fucking clue what he's talking about when it comes to any well-known and/or important issue.

Look at the community we're in. Are you really that surprised?

I am against the arguing about religion. Though, I am pro-religious debate. Of course, many members of the FFR community don't know the difference.

I don't think an all out ban on religious debate is possible. Religion affects all aspects of life, even the secular aspects.

Depends on what kind of religious debate you want.

You want to debate the existance of a god? Not gonna happen.

Want to prove some written history in the Bible? Go ahead.

There's a reason I don't lock religion threads, and there's a reason I don't say what I really want to say.

Although I am Christian myself, I voted for no debating of religion.

Although there is the occasional person who brings up valid points, what generally happens is that some kid says "God exists because the Bible says so." A dozen others then proceed to mock him and trash religion in general.

So I guess in this case, to advance God's purposes, I have to vote for not discussing it on this forum.

You're actually proving the mindset I'm talking about.

Without attacking it, you're attacking religion. Go look at what I put in bold in the quote. What you said, basically, suggest a superiority of atheists over those that believe in God.

The "arguments" that occur here are so one-sided that there isn't much of a point at all. I can't think of the last time someone even made a passing comment INVOKING the name of Jesus or God without someone else bashing that person. It's like the gang mentality kicks in. You're either right because you're in the majority, or you're wrong because the majority obviously posesses better logic. A guy can't even say, for example, "I pray to God the people of New Orleans will be able to reforge their lives," without someone like Rai popping in and going "thar is no god lol religion."

At the very least, perhaps we should start a TGB type banning system for CT. Flames get you banned. A critical analysis of why you disagree (not think the other person is wrong, but disagree; there is quite a difference) with someone else's point of view is all good.

That's my veiw, too. I mean I am so Christian that I dont even do Christmas anymore ( the reason why I dont is that it's no longer about God, so why do it? I could explain but if you wanna know then you'll ask me). But even though it hurts, I'm voting for a ban.

Wait.

So.

Don't celebrate the birth of your savior, but celebrate his death.

That totally sounds like a logical decision to make.

You can have Christmas leaving out santa and that crap. I knew several Christians who took this view on the holiday before I quit being one.

Laharl, on what grounds would the line be drawn? I mean, it's not easy sometimes to discern the bias. Personally, I am biased. It's an odd kind of bias since I've been in your shoes and then stepped out of them having been in a Catholic school for 5 years and a Confirmed Catholic of 16 years before I quit, but I never would have noticed the hidden bias in Afro's post without you pointing it out.

Then again, there is an subtle bias every time you capitalize 'god', since you assume your god is the supreme god to rule all other gods of all other religions in doing so.

I'm not sure the majority of people on this board are atheist.
And I honestly mean no offense, but I've not heard any good logical reason that says that religions are, uh, for lack of a better word, 'true'. Religion to me is essentially entirely based on faith, so I don't understand why you're upset about a view that all religious arguments end in 'I have/don't have faith'. I'm sure my opinion about religion is known, but I've never called anyone stupid for being religious. You can probably tell that I think religion is something we should still be allowed to talk about.
Just because a few people have problems discussing an issue, doesn't mean that everyone else should not be allowed to discuss it. We just have to work on getting the good sense to not enter into a flame war with someone.

Its also kinda weird that people keep bringing up 'it's the 14 year olds who are making stupid-ass comments in CT' because I'm pretty sure the majority of us who post and comment here aren't 14 anymore, and also that many burns aren't from 14 year olds.

I think he's kidding.

As much as I like seeing spirited debate, there are people on here (14-18) that just won't have it because they HAVE to be right and there can be no middle ground. I love reading the openings of locked religious topic threads, because they're good reads, but then after the second page, they degenerate into definition tossing.

But I would really like to see religious topics again. It's good to see something unite people... And then make them huddle around a fire as wolves circle. Great team building exercise.

As it stands, I'm voting FOR religious debates, but ban people from them that can't grasp the fact that debate doesn't mean ANGRY YELLING NO GOD SO THERE IS A GOD NO THERE ISNT YOURE NIAVE

the religious issues you guys bring up tend to be the ones that aren't debatable because there isn't a common basis for evaluating religious arguments

I just didn't notice because i just automatically capitalize the word "God".

its okay to have faith and to talk about what you believe in, but too many people start flaming others for writing comments about what they believe. For that specific reason, I said no.
