I'm glad this thread came up because death has been in my mind lately. I have been thinking about what will happen after death. Will there be an eternal state of nothingness? Will I be sent to Heaven or Hell?
For me, death has surrounded me. A cousin and two Grandparents died in one month. It made me really notice how close death can take your life away. I don't like to think about death, but I think about it all the time. If at any time, one of these religions (Christianity, Islam, Judism) is proven correct after death, that means many people are bound to be proven wrong (If there is indeed an Afterlife) Scenarios: Christianity was proven correct. 66% of the people are proven wrong. Islam is proven correct. 80% of the people would be wrong. Judism is proven correct. I don't know the exact percent wrong, but it is above 90%. I like to think that if there is an afterlife, all people have a place in it, and people don't have to burn in hell just because they made the wrong choice. |

Shopowner, that's one of my primary concerns with 'religion'. And also the reason I give props to Mormons, because they're very good at giving (as much as they can) empirical evidence.

I think about death alot. And I would rather re-incarnation for several reasons:
1. An eternal afterlife would get boring (pointless) after just a million years. Let alone an eternity. 2. Nothingness after death just doesn't make sense to me. 3. I like to think that what we do in our life, will affect the next-life. (Karma) 4. I don't like the idea of hell. Quote:

Actually, current theory says the universe will last and expand forever.
![]() But not the life within it XD Extreme acceleration and expansion of the space within the universe will cause all life to cease existance. Then again, I have a feeling within the next century or so with breakthroughs in theoretical physics this will change slightly. General relativity to explain dark energy simply isn't adaquate. There's something missing (string theory?). We'll see. The universe only started accelerating within the last few billion years. The universe, if we look at it as a self manefesting organism, could be preparing itself for something far greater than a simple death.

hmm, this is a very interesting discussion.
well, i can say that i am not afraid of death because death doesn't exist. and death doesn't exist because life doesn't exist. and life doesn't exist because we are simply made of material components, and also chemical-electrical reactions that give us the impression of being different from a piece of steel. all our thoughts, senses, emotions are in my opinion only mterial. so "death" is only the lost of an integrity like a human being. but thinking about, you will understand that atoms that compose you will never vanish. or better, they might become energy following the famous Einsten's reaction E=mc^2. so i live my life in tranquillity and without doubts because i have all the answers in me. i don't believe also in any type of spirituality of religion. they are only for phsicologically weak people (most of the world population unfortunately). and i also don't care about people around me because they are only made by atoms. i don't care tuppence if one of my parents or my friends die. most of you will think i am a fool, but i think this is an high level of esistential thought. sorry for the poor language used but you can see i'm not from a commonwealth country. please tell me what do you think of my theory. U know what,( and don't you DARE make fun of me, or u'll get ur ass slapped) i don't beleve in heaven or hell. I think there is just one ultamit underworld, were you just sit there doin nothing special. and, I'm only afraid of death if it's dying from being slashed by some ax-murderer or somthing painful like that. I'm also afraid of slow, painful deaths, like being eaten by rats LOL!

Didn't have time to read more than half posts, but I believe that once you die. You cease to exist, then at any time, you(not you, you but an awareness of self being comes to existence which will define the new you which isn't really old you). You might as well be born in a galaxy about 50 trillion light years from here as some tree or animal. Basically "you" can be "reborn" anywhere and into anything. That's what I think.

@Reach: If the universe expands forever, won't everything eventually just freeze (or decay?)?
For that matter, what ever happened to The Big Crunch? |

As the universe approaches an infinite expansion acceleration and velocity, that just means everything, all matter and energy will continue to dispurse more thinly. The universe will continue to expand indefinitely. Big cruch was disproved because of wmap. You can figure out if something is going to collapse back in on itself based on acceleration relative to how much mass the universe contains. You can also predicts relative shape of the universe (flat on a small scale, but the newest wmap data suggests 1 of 2 things: the universe actually folds back onto itself as a dodecahdral type space o_O! http://www.valdostamuseum.org/hamsmith/PDtoco.gif or it looks like this http://www.newscientist.com/data/ima...4879-1_596.jpg . All other models are considered outdated at the moment anyway, the flat infinite universe model failed about 3 years ago when it was proven inaccurate with our data) based on this and using measurements of old light and it's dispursion. What they indeed saw, was that the universe is pushing out with a far greater force than what is pulling it in (though we still don't understand the details of why it's accelerating other than 'dark energy' is causing it.). It shouldn't collapse back in on itself, or even slow down, but it could slow down. It would have to break a hell of a lot of our theories to do so, but then again general relativity isn't really right XD Think about it, 8 dimensional tensor calculus is used...that right there tells you it isn't right XD It makes wonderful predictions, but isn't accurate. PS I still don't believe in afterlife.

when you think about it we're all like pencils! *i love pencils hahahaha* But no really, they all come in different shapes and sizes *the cheap colored type, colored pencils, the rediculiously big ones swith no sharpener ect.*. And it's like whenever you sharpen them they get shorter and shorter *ok a pencil sharpener sort of represents time becuase you only live for a certain amount of time*. And when the pencil is all gone you die! Lovely aint it? now this is the philosophy of a Jr. High student . Very simple minded, be amazed by my stupidness!!

I find it funny when people fail at being random and think they're funny.

Of course we are. No matter if you deny it or not. People are just people, we're animals. And we have fear, it's natural. Everyone is scared of death once in their lifetime. And as for the life after death, try not to think about it too much, i've spent alot of time on that. I never could accept the heaven/hell thing. Because why would be born into existance at a single point in time, and then just continue to 'be" forever. As for oblivion after death, just think of it before you were born. You don't remember, and you never were.

Well, I do see your side of the conversation EB, but I share a different view. I don't fear death, because I accept it as fact. I want to think that the only reason we die is "because we accept it as an inevitability." I do choose to accept it as the inevitable, but I don't fear it, partially because I don't think about it. I often wonder if there is a Heaven or a Hell. Maybe there is an eternal silence. I don't know.
Thanks for this topic EB, it's a good one. -Link

I thought the theory was that the universe will continue to expand until it reaches its maximum volume, then it'll collapse on itself. |

My fear is purely in non-existence. As long as I have my perception... I will be fine.
