Why do I not fear death?
I don't believe in an afterlife.

I have kind of wondered,
What would you do if you found out somehow that you had only 24 hours (or a week, or any other short defined amount of time) left to live? Assume you are healthy; not on your deathbed. Just if you could somehow know that you would inevitably be struck by lightning or something on that date with no chance of survival, what would you do in the meantime? It's interesting to think about.

Personally I am not afraid of death. I want to avoid it, but I don't want the idea of death to hinder my life.
If I had the opportunity to choose an afterlife, I would definitely choose to be a ghost. Don't lol and skip my post plz. I love the human race and I've always wished that when I die that I could just sit back and observe us as we move forward as a race. Not having the ability to actively participate but always observing. Somewhat like how I would imagine a god would work. If we really are ants in god's sandbox, when I die I want to sit and watch the rest of the ants' lives play out. And maybe it would go even further than us. All life forms have to have an end somewhere and I want to figure out how the Universe plays out by observing it. Life is passing through time like a movie. I just want to see how it ends.

Lots of ideas here, and I'll try to adress as many as I can remember.
Religion... my biggest problem is it's too contradictory. You believe in the Bible, and therefore go to Heaven. Somebody else believes in the Kuran (sp?), and therefore I go to Hell for believing in the Bibel. Simple logic denotes that one of us should be right, but that's impossible. Fallacy FTW. Of course, if I did decide to ever choose a faith, it would be Mormonism. It's pretty damn hard to go to Hell in their religion... I mean REALLY hard. Pretty much everybody goes to Heaven... even murderers (however, they go to Heaven level 1, which is still infinetly better than what we have here on Earth). If you be a really good morning, you can reach the highest level of Heaven (level 3, zomg), where you get to be a God of your own universe. Ok, so perhaps I've trivialized it, but I thought that was pretty awesome. Fate... save a long string of logic, let me say this- if you believe in 'fate' (be it pre-determined outcomes, or a complete lack of choice), KILL YOURSELF. Now to the person who mentioned clones... all I can say is quantam mechanics. The spins of atoms, Shrodinger's (sp?) cat, and all that great stuff. That's what decides. Super-Smashman, oddly enough, I feel the same way... I've already found myself exhibiting this a lot in my own life already... simply put, I'm an observer (and not a Dark Templar, oh snap). Then again, I'm well articulated, and seem to have a subtle manipulative nature in conversation... heh... now I'm just feeding my own ego, but at this point, most people seem not to be worth my time anymore... modesty, hah. btw, you go to any of the TGs? As far as what I believe in terms of life, I've come to the conclusion that life is a matter of perception. We each live in our own perception, and my favorite part is when the differences of eachother's own realities collide. A fun scenario to consider, is for you to explain to myself who you are, and how you KNOW you aren't somebody else. Convince me that you (or, from my PoV, myself) is not actually a 35 year old nutcase in an insane asylum who's created this own perception for himself in place of his old identity. That every fabric of this idea has manifested itself into it's own illusion of life. What if I, in typing this, am simply a voice trying to escape from your subconcsious, trying to warn you of what is in fact true- that I, and everthing else you know, does NOT exist, and you are, in fact, a 35 year old nutcase in an insanse asylum. Fun to ponder. But it's your own reality, so you might as well embrace it. Of course, this could branch off into a discussion of the sanity of one's own mind... lest we say, the fact that I to this extent consider things make me realize I'm not quite normal, but knowing that I have this awareness reminds me that I'm not TOO far gone. But I digress. I can't say I'm all that afraid of death... whether that's because I've been surrounded by it, or I, for awhile, had a strong consideration for suicide, I'm not sure. I can't control how long I live, but I can certainly control when I die... and yet, I'm no longer in a hurry. Luckily I've always been a rational person. If there's not afterlife, than I consider that I suitable solace. If there is, I have enough faith to know that my choices in life are compassionate enough to deserve a 'good' afterlife, even if the empathy is rather apathetic. I was gonna write something about awareness, but I'm starting to get too tired to hold coherent thoughts... I've been awake for... 36 hours now? I'm unsure, but I probably should get a good two hours of sleep before I go to school. Despite my best attempts, I remain defeated in weaning myself entirely off of sleep... but I'm getting as close as a reasonably healthy person can be. Off to bed... Oh, one more thing, @ Reach. It's nice to see other people who understand space-time. Always aggravates me though, how so many people have these terrible habits of how they percieve time, space, and how they are attributed as 'dimensions'. W/e. Ahh, ONE last thing. I made note of one post on here, which is probably the most... inspiring post in this topic. Read Flashstinger's post, #52... good stuff there. Night... err, morning guys. |

I feel that some religions mostly Christianity can be very contradicting and hypocritical of itself.
For the cloning, if it saves lives or helps mankind in some way, I wouldn't mind it being practiced. Many would argue that it would be like playing God, but God gave us freedom of thought, why not use that gift to our advantage?

Well, I think that death is the opposite of life. Therefore, death is everything that life isn't.
Life has possibilities, new days, all of that. But death has no options, no days.. I guess it's just zero, nothing.. Just the opposite of whatever life is. On the other hand, if death is the opposite of birth.. I don't know. We would probably go to the place where you were before you were born, which I doubt we will ever know. What do you think? EDIT: Wait, if we went to the place where we were before we were born, that means we would be born again. But that's impossible because there are WAY more people now than there ever were, so how did we all come to be?

whats is there to be afraid of? not going to heaven? not going anywhere? when it's your time to go you gotta go. no ands, ifs or buts what ever happens to us after we die will happen can't change it...so just live your live to the best of your abilities we may be reencarnated (cannot spell) into the life of a new born and the cycle just continues over and over again just everytime we get a different out look on life the only thing we take with us to the new born is our smarts (what we learned in our previous life) and to answer the question no i do not fear death

"we may be reencarnated (cannot spell) into the life of a new born"
heh...one of my more well liked theories Here's my theory on life/death: We are all simply the dreams of supernatural beings, and whenever those beings awaken, it's our time. Thoughts? (I forgot how to do quotes...anyone refresh my memory? >.>) |

Full metal alchemist
Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth." ― Alphonse Elric when we are born something is made when we die something is given, when we die these is more than we started with so something somewhere has to balance this equation for u visual people 4 + 4 = 8 its totally obvious 1 + 4 = 8 it just cant happen so where does that other 5 come from or go??? |

I'm very curious about it, but obviously still scared. I would bet almost everybody is at least somewhat afraid of it.
My biggest fear is that my consciousness will cease to exist, and my second biggest is that I'll just continue existing without gaining any new knowledge or insight. What I hope for most is to somehow gain a complete understanding of the universe. That would pwn. But I can't answer the question of what happens after death, because I can't answer the question of what consciousness is. Does it somehow arise from the complex arrangement of mere matter? Is that possible? If not, it must be something more, but what? Call it a soul, or "energy", or whatever, that doesn't explain what the hell it is. And so I can't tell what happens to it when I die. Sadly for me, I find the nonexistence theory to make the most sense, and be the most probable. But ultimately, I have no way of knowing (and that's my stance on just about every philosophical/metaphysical issue). Last edited by jlapointe; 05-10-2006 at 03:25 AM.. |

For all you religious people out there: NOTHING lasts forever -- not even the universe.
This will all end someday.
