Default Does death scare anybody else?

I get the feeling that I'm the only person that is as scared as death as much as I am. Well, not so much death as what comes afterwards. Basically, 2 things could happen. Either we go on living forever (heaven, hell, reincarnation, whatever) or we die and are dead and there's nothing. The problem for me is not the uncertainty of whether it will be eternity or completely nothing, but the fact that both of those outcomes scare me ****less.

Why? Probably because I can't imagine either of them. I mean, when I try to imagine nothing I just close my eyes and see black and somewhere in my head I think "k, that's nothing, just black." But nothing wouldn't even be that. It'd be...NOTHING. I can't imagine just not even existing anymore. It scares me the most.

Eternity though, that still scares me. Most people hear eternity and think "oh gee that'd be nice" but who actually sits and tries to think about it? Maybe I'm just weird but the thought of living forever and never stopping scares me. I mean, it seems like the thing to do, but there never being an end to my life is just weird. It seems like it should end but I don't want it to.

Mostly, I just wanna know if there's anybody else who thinks like I do. Is anybody else scared of eternity and nothingness?

I used to have these thoughts alot. Heck, every so often when I'm trying to get to sleep at night I get those thoughts and it scares me to hell too. But here's how I see it: if we aren't existing, we won't be able to fear the thought of living for eternity because, well, we'll be dead. Sure it's scary when we're alive, but when we're dead it won't matter cause we won't be able to think or feel.

I don't exactly see how you can just cease to exist. That's why i'm gonna live forever because if i don't belive in death, then i won't die. It's p-r-o-b-a-b-l-y not going to work, but it's worth a try.

I'm more scared of the idea of those I love dying.

It's common to fear death, though. It's the second-biggest fear among adults. I think that, especially if you are afraid to die, you should live a good, full life. One that, once it's over, your impact still lingers in the living world (in a positive way).

Hm... I seem to have lost my train of thought.

I totally get what EB is saying. I mean, i saw this movie once (an old movie, like maybe late 80's early 90's, but i dont remember what movie it is) where this one guy died and they showed him in the afterlife and all it was was like a spirit with no defined shape with his head that was just floating around with a bunch of other spirits in one big room of some type, and yeah idk i just remember seeing that a long time ago. Anyway, i think the same things. I mean, if all of this heaven and after-life stuff is true, then dying should be a great experience since we will supposedly be 100% healthy all the time and never have to worry about anything else in the world. The only thing about that is you can't see all your loved ones anymore, unless they're dead with you. A friend of mine died about a year ago with a skateboard/carcrash accident. I always want to ask him what it's like to be dead, cause i'm curious. I mean, what if we die and then its just pitch black forever? Like, in our mind we still exist, but we can't see, feel, or touch anything, we can just think to ourselves and be like "where the hell am i?" forever. I don't know i just want to know what it's like, but be able to tell everyone else about it at the same time lol. They should do an experiment where these scientists/doctors could safely kill someone and revive them just as easily as they killed them. It sounds stupid, but if it works, they could possibly try to explain what it's like to be dead, if they can remember. It'd be interesting.

Yeah, its 8 in the morning, leave me alone.

Can't say I'm actually afraid of it, no. More confused, like anyone else would be. The way I figure, if it happens, it happens...

But then you have to wonder what's after it. The most common human reaction to uncertainty is fear of it. We, as humans, fear what we don't understand.

Personally I'm just more curious than anything. Not saying that I'm going to rush into death or anything, but I just wanna know. Get what I'm saying, kind of?

I seriously do not like the idea of dying. It's the ultimate end, but just for a single person - a few people may remember you for a while, but after that, the world leaves you behind forever. My thoughts are so avid and hard to grasp on this topic that it's hard to put them into words, but to put it simply, I consider how I will never play another game again, never get to do everything I wanted, and suddenly I've freaked myself out.

But then, you've got to consider - wouldn't it suck if we didn't die? We'd get overcrowded, fast. Everyone would get bored; there's only so much you can do in a lifetime before everything gets repetitive. And what motivation would there be to do anything? Would you be jumping to get everything you want to do done as soon as possible? No, because you have infinite time to do it.

It's a scary prospect, but 80 years is plenty for me. If I get that much, I'll be content to eat dirt as is the way of nature.

I'm not scared of death. I mean, I obviously don't want to die lol, but it's not something I am scared of or worry about.

Since I don't believe in life after death, I believe there is nothing. The neat thing about your brain shutting off though is that when what controls your conciousness passes from this world, you are not going to know it. You will never ever have to worry about what nothing and death is like because you cannot possibly experience it! XD (that's right, you cannot experience death! XD)

In the case of there actually being an afterlife...well, woot!?! XD

Anyways death doesn't really scare me because when you die you have no more stress. No more bills to worry about, no more term papers to write or tests to take hehe...Secondly I believe in God and heaven, and am pretty sure I'll be going there. Heaven is supposed to be eternal happiness, so if you have to die to get there, then the sooner the better lol.

The thing that scares me is how you die and suffering while dying. For example, being buried alive or drowning or even dying of lung cancer would suck. No suffering, make it quick and painless please.

I'm with Panda here. The thought of those I love dying scares the crap out of me... but when it comes to my own death, whatever happens happens.

If anything bothers me about thinking about my death, it's thinking that it could happen prematurely, before I get the chance to do certain things that I would not want to leave hanging. That would upset me, but it's not all that likely, so I don't really worry about it.

I think there was a thread like this a while ago... but I'm glad it came up again.

Right now, the thought of dying really scares me. There's so much that I have not yet done yet, and really want to do. I'm also with Jamuko/Panda when it comes to my family members and friends dying. I've dealt with some death in the family, but when it comes to my parents or siblings I'm not sure how I will react.

Also, this may sound really weird, but I almost would rather know that I am dying as opposed dying in my sleep. Maybe it's because I'm just really not sure if there is an afterlife. The thought of just going to sleep forever and having no idea that you will be in that state forever, is not a pleasant feeling.

I don't want to die. There's so much to learn and so much I know, and dying before I can use any of that in the slightest way would be such a shame. Most people like to live life by just enjoying it. I enjoy it by learning how it works and the logic behind it. If it weren't for my love of learning, I wouldn't be scared of death. It'd be like "oh, wow, I had fun. Time to get off the ride and keep the good memories." But when you actually have a goal in life, you really don't want to die.

When you sleep through the night, no dreams, no interruption, this is nothingness. I think this is what it will be like when we die.

No emotion, no nothing, no thinking about it. You... don't even know you're dead.

Ok, first of all, I'm personally not scared of death:

1. Everyone dies in their physical state.
2. No one knows what's beyond death and we'll never know if we never die.
3. If there is no heaven, hell, or eternity, we will stop existing. You wont think,
hear, see, anything. It's an impossible situation to describe but with
nothingness. And black is something. A certainly boring something. But
it is still something.

Life After Death:

1. I believe in it personally:

a. My house. There are no children under 10 in my house. Yet, you can hear
a rocking chair sqeaking, which there is no rocking chair, and a baby
crying. Only happens at night. Annoying as ****. But, when my house
was moved, (We have the pictures of it across the street), a child was
killed, in my brother room when the roof collapsed on the rocking chair.
We found this in the old newspapers. They fixed the roof, and every
once in a while you'll hear it at like 2AM. I was in my room when I didn't
have a door and their room is right across from mine. I heard it and went
to sleep. Scariest thing ever happened to me.

2. Ouiji board story.

Ok, I am at my friends house. Down in his basement. Hey! We find an Ouiji
board. We start messing with it. His cousins come down. They start playing with it and we go upstairs. They are down there for a while. Talking. To what we dont quite know. They come up later looking freaked. We lock them in their room for a joke. We go into our room and sleep. The door was still locked when we got up, and we let them out. We got breakfast and then went down to the basement. Ouiji board gone. WTF? Then we ask the cousins, "WTF?, What did you do with it." They said they left it on the coffee table. But they said that something told them to take it to the cemetary about a mile down the road. They also said that it said that "Specters fill the sky or some stuff." We thought it was BS. So to get to my house you go through to cemetary. We're going. We get the idea to check the tombstone.
Had some dates and the thingy scratched into it. And there sits the ouiji board on his grave.

1. We got tricked and they jumped out a 2nd story window
2. Life exists after death.

The thing about me is that I can't think in a nonlogical way. Everything has to be logical to me, or it doesn't exist. I've thought about life after death numerous times, and each time I've reasoned that there are many reasons which it can't exist. I'm not going to explain them, since my skill with words would just once again make me end up looking like an idiot, but they're good reasons.

Just so I don't sound biased toward science, I also think most of that is bull****. I think most of the formulae are lousy half-assed shortcuts to explain the real way things work. I believe the way things actually work is a lot less complicated, but it works in ways we haven't thought to test yet. I think about gravity, for example, not as "the natural force of attraction exerted by a celestial body, such as Earth, upon objects at or near its surface, tending to draw them toward the center of the body" with its corresponding numbers and formulae, but as a simple concept we have yet to discover.

But I'm sort of offtopic, and starting to sound stupid. My point is, from my point of view, life after death is illogical, and therefore impossible.

And if you knew that there was a kid that got killed in a rocking chair, and you heard a squeaking noise at night, that's what you associate it with. It's probably just the woodwork or something. Best way to find out is to investigate it.

Well life after death is illogical. It is unlikely, as it relies on the foundation of the supernatural. Everything we know about how the brain works tells us the end is really the end, but that doesn't mean people can't believe. I mean, the thought of our reality being erased is kind of scary.

You think most of science is bull****? How so? I mean, reality is only what we construct it around. The foundation of science and knowledge is built upon everything we are able to understand.

And actually, gravity is fairly complex. It's just as simple as that XD The universe itself is complex to us. It's not just an attraction, it's a consequnce of the pliable region which we are contained in; space time. Energy or mass within space bends it. Gravity exists because of objects bending space time. The bending of space time is not exactly a simple concept.

I suppose you can mention the theory of everything, but that theory would be so complex in it's simplicity it'll be a miracle if we ever actually figure it out XD

If it wasn't for the complexity of science we would not be at where we stand now as a civilization!
