Boris, is it that huge section in Leviticus that has been beaten to death already? Because if it has, stop beating it.

I've read the Leviticus, but I know that a lot of people don't do the offerings explained in the Leviticus. Or the cleanslyness (if that's a word) of man and woman. God instructed the Isrealites to wash their garments and bathe in fresh water. Then you would be clean by evening. I don't quite get it. If you get dirty you were supposed to do that.

Oh, by the way I'm new

Leveticus is OLD TESTAMENT! Why isn't anyone listening to me? This is just getting absurd.

Hey... I just posted a decent sized thing up there about false happiness, integrity, truth to one's self, a dystopia and tied it into the criticism of religion and religious action... and actually put thought into it which is more than what I can say about most of your posts.

There's stuff there you can criticize or uphold... rather than just post some unrelated dumb comment.

Oh, and this was found hanging off the bottom of my post:

"Yesterday, I went to see the Exorcism of Emily Rose, and it was more than I thought it was going to be.
And for those who don't know, it was about a case( in court) over a spiritual matter. If you don't know, just see the movie."

there's no battle, people who try to pit these two against each other are the real losers

no offense to anyone, but I think its really lame to kick out science the way Almish people do
Religion can stay, but there's no point pitting it against science, because science is based on evidence (whoa I can see the light bulb lighting up because of electricity, why dont I use it)

I mean, having a religion that says, dont use any of the stuff invented in the last 150 years or so because its too luxurious, is pretty lame. Thats why I dont think religion should try to fight science.

buut they can coexist, you just can't really compare them, because they are different on their base levels (faith vs evidence)

OK... I haven't checked CT in over a month.

Just read this whole thread...

To Guido, from page 1: Inquisition was 500 years ago (513, if you take 1492 as the sole year). What about other large Judeo-genocide based around Christian principles... Hitler comes to mind as a recent example (60-65 years ago). I wouldn't include Stalin and Mussolini in the group, as they pretty much killed their own people who disagreed with them, regardless of religion.

To Chromer: The reason people can't stand you is because you ALWAYS go and throw some bonehead racist comment into every post you make. The one you made on page 2 is no different. There is ZERO reason to say what you said.

To Ramonesfan: As a person who lives an hour from Lancaster, PA (where the majority of Amish live)... and have a brother who lives in Lancaster... while the Amish don't use electricity or cars or other fun gadgets like computers, they have NO problem whatsoever with hitching rides from non-Amish. That seems hypocritical to me. But, it could just be me.

To the rest of the thread: I feel that 95% of the world's problems stem from religion. Internal strife, external rifts, disagreements, beliefs, morals... all stem from religion, and different religions or interpretations lead to conflicts between people. Take Bush... his extreme Christian beliefs are getting TV/Radio censored (which goes against the 1st ammendment), and is working towards outlawing abortions. If this happens, how many rape victims will die from botched alleyway abortions? How many extra inner-city women will be on wellfare because they can't abort a child they don't want. How many abused children will America have, for the same reason. Etc, etc, etc.

Look at Conflicts between the Middle East and Israel, or Terrorism against the US and England. It is 100% based upon religion.

I could continue, but frankly... religion debates piss me off, and I don't enjoy being pissed off.

I'd like to point out that women almost never get pregnant from rape and that people who use that argument generally don't know what they're talking about. As for not being able to afford a child... it'd be your own fault. You have 99.9% control over that until you have unprotected sex.

Do you honestly believe that without religion we'll all get along?
And sure you can just say the problem is religion, but it really comes down to individual people making decisions.

I'm also assuming that you don't believe that religion is corrupt.

Because if religion was really corrupt, then it's just an excuse for greed/whatever. So even if religion was eliminated, that greed/whatever that was driving the corrupt religion would still exist and continue causing problems for others.

Layla... I don't really care that you specifically didn't reply to my post... and I'm not mad.

Jam, religion has been the backer for all of the greed and problems. Would they still be around if religion changed or went away? Sure, there would be something else that would drive those forces. It is just that in our society, and throughout history, religion has been that catalyst.

So yes, you can theorize that it would still be around without religion, and I'd agree with you, but religion is here and most of the large conflicts are religiously based.

About abortion, I'll let Whorli handle that... she is the pro-choice champ, not I. Also, it is someone's own fault that they can't afford a child, but their culture has raised them in a certain manner that alot of the time leads to being poor. They are at a cultural disadvantage that won't nor can't change overnight.

Tassel, I never made a racist remark. I gave my opinions in an open and honest way. The whole beating thing? You must have not remembered a while ago, when a church down south was reported to police for actually teaching parents that it is ok to beat children because the Bible says to. Is that uncalled for? No, its just adding to what I was saying. You must be the racist if you think everything I say is race related. Yes, I point out the fact that I'm Black (not as often as before) but I still do to present the fact that there are other cultures that are invovled in this discussion.

I'm not talking about money. I'm talking about how people already have their "choice" without the use of abortion. If you don't want a child, use protection or don't have sex. If you screw up with Step One. Don't worry! You can always put the child up for adoption once you have it if you don't want it/can't afford it.

So now that we've established that... what is there to argue? Life wins.

I think philosophy and religion in general would be missed once being completely eliminated.

What hope would be left? However false, I think it gives people a brightness in something greater that is really valuable. If suddenly we were to say: "Alright, we just proved it. There is no God or anything and all your religions were false." What would people do? I'm not saying whether God is real or not, but I think humanity needs their 'Santa Claus'.

Religiously based? But if religion is false/corrupt, then it's based on greed/whatever... which will get around through vehicles like propaganda, marketing, deception, consumerism, or just types of views and lifestyle presented through entertainment that would work very similar to religion but with less positive overtones.

I kinda wanna jump into this topic, but I don't feel like reading everything. I'd just like to say:

I agree with what that kid said. Christians do a lot of good. Christians also do a lot of bad/annoying things. Somebody mentioned the Crusades and such. Hmmmmm, a Holy War? Like, a Jihad or something? Not like any other religion has ever done that. Riiiiight.

The thing I hate about Christianity is that so many of the people at the forefront of it are pushy idiots. I'm Christian and have been for quite some time, but seriously. Dinosaurs don't exist because they're not in the Bible? I've heard idiots say that, and they're just stupid. Things like dinos are mentioned in the Bible (IIRC), they're just not called that, because that name was made up THOUSANDS OF YEARS AFTER IT WAS WRITTEN. And like, the story of Jonah and the whale; I'm fairly sure the "whale" was called a big fish in the Bible, but we refer to it as a whale.

But anywho, my point is, the people at the forefront of the Christian world give all Christians a bad name. There is a preacher who stands out in the Brickyard (hangout place in NC State, big open courtyard thing) and yells at people. Every Arabic person he sees, or anybody with one of those headdress things (I keep forgetting what they're called >_< ), he yells at them about how they hate Jesus and that they're gonna burn in hell. Every girl who walks by in shorts (aka: 99% of the girls here) gets called a whore or a slut, and any guy walking with them is a sinful person, according to the preacher. I've seen a televised preacher say that Allah wasn't God, despite those being 2 words that mean EXACTLY THE SAME THING. Soooo many Christians are just so dumb about everything.

You see, I'm Christian, but when I talk to other (hardcore and annoying) Christians, they think I'm athiest or something. They don't understand how I can believe in evolution (which is proven fact, to some extent at least) and refuse to even think about how may be evolution IS the intelligent design of things. One girl (a SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL) was like "well if we came from apes, how come you don't like, go to the zoo and see an ape have a baby that is hairless and becomes a human!?" A lot of people are completely ignorant about other things.

And this goes for more than just Christians. The terrorists who are being led around by the leaders over there are being convinced on religious reasons. They're being told that if they kill us then they'll go to Heaven. For a project, I looked at parts of the Koran(sp? I'm terrible with spelling things >_< ) and there were some really interesting things. For instance, one part said that in the afterlife, Christians will be treated better than athiests and people who don't accept God at all. The book also says that Muslims should be non-violent unless provoked, in which case they should defend themselves IN THE NAME OF GOD! So really, all the terrorist leaders have to do is be like "dude, the US attacked us, check it out! WE MUST DEFEAT THEM FOR GOD!" and they have sufficient reasoning. Hell, the guys could stage an attack that looks like the US just to provoke people. But in the end, there's about as much reasoning for them to be anti-US as there is reasoning in the Bible for people to hate blacks and have slaves.

Honestly, I think we should all learn religions. It should be a mandatory thing in like, middle school, before people get too stuck in one thing but after they're able to think for themselves a bit. We should learn all the basic principles of every religion and be able to pick. Even if it didn't change us from the religion that we were already, it would at least show us the other religions and help us all be less ignorant. That's where a lot of the religious problems stem from. People get so stuck in their religion that they don't bother to learn about other people's religions, so they don't understand. I'm Christian, yeah, but I LOVE knowing about other people's religions. After all, if I know enough to find flaws in their religion, it makes it easier to convert them than if I'm just telling them that they'll go to hell.

Okay, I think I'm done ranting. Sorry if I've repeated anything. >_>

Not to be funny or anything--but dear lord. Life does not "win"! What "choice" are you giving people? People will ALWAYS have sex. And a lot of them will not use protection. When they use abortion as another method of birth control--not even TRYING to get Plan B Emergency Contraception, or use BC to begin with, or a condom, or even just taking a shot in the mouth--that IS indeed a problem. But your solution is ridiculous. Don't have sex? I refuse to give up one of my favorite pastimes just because there's a lot of idiots out there who try to screw it up for me.

I take my birth control religiously (more so than I do my religion) and yet, there is a slight chance that it will at some point fail. And then, if I do get pregnant, I will NOT have a baby and then give it up for adoption. I have no desire to BE pregnant, nor do I have the time, energy, or commitment to have a baby in the first place. This is WHY I am on BC to begin with. Having a baby is not just 9 months of normal life and then out pops a baby. It's a lot of work before the spawn ever drops out of the crotch. There's vitamins and all sorts of nutritious stuff that preggos need. There's stuff they can't eat or drink (I am not giving up my already-rare alcohol imbibing moments, or my uber-caffeinated sodas) and stuff they MUST eat or drink. There's the stretch marks and the destruction of a body image that I've worked way too hard to accept for myself to just let it all go because of some parasite. Then there's the health issues and problems, nausea and vomiting and having to pee ALL THE TIME (I already pee more than anyone I know, and I don't need ANY MORE THANK YOU) and the fact that I don't want to take time off work or school (nor can I afford to) in order to have a baby and recuperate from that enormous burden, even if I don't have to care for it afterwards. Plus the fact that I wouldn't be able to have sex for a while, and that would make me very upset.

In short, life does not "win" because you say so. Having a baby is not alway an option, even if you can give it up for adoption afterwards. Not everyone can do what your religion says is right, and not everyone wants to. Stop trying to force your beliefs on others.

EB, learning a diff religion was a requirement in Global History. Everyone had to do a project on a different religion, and 2 months was dedicated to learning 7 or 8 religions. It's interesting to see everyone's view. Most of the religions have a lot of similarities.

We could do it into the 3rd trimester... you'd just have to be on top.

And Jamie... did you completely ignore every reason Whorli gave you? She posts a very long response to you about issues pre-birth for the mother that are valid, especially for those still in school, or working without the aid of a rich male in their life... and you post a 1 sentence response that ignores everything. Awesome.

Besides the fact that I would likely go crazy with preggo Whorli. I barely can stand her now.
