Default Fast Food

I watched a documentary called Super Size Me the other day and it got me wondering about things.

This man went a McDonald's diet for 31 days. Which means McDonalds for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. After he was done he had gained about 27 pounds, his cholesteral and blood pressure had risen about 60 points, and he was suffering from depression (at least from what I gathered). Whenever he didn't have McDonalds in his hands he was sad and didn't want to do anything. Also his liver was deteriorating, in other words he was having a lot of the same effects as alcoholism.

What I was wondering was do you think over time if you eat fast food like once a week, do you think the same could happen. Also without knowing the outcome of the experiment, would any of you guys do this?

Just a little add on they showed kids pictures of people that are "famous," and it kind of got me laughing to know that 3rd graders knew who Ronald McDonald and Wendy were, yet they didn't know who George Washington or Abraham Lincoln were.

Discuss.

oh yeah i watched that, and there was a family who didnt remember the whole pledge of alegiance (however you spell it :P) but one of them could recite the burger anthem or whatever it was....strange. and yeah the wendy/rondald washington/lincoln thing was funny but back to why you made this...after i saw it i never wanted to SEE another mcdonalds, let alone eat at one. it sort of disgusted me, i think if i tried to eat it for most of my meals id literally and metaphorically die within a few weeks, im in bad enough condition already...

i guess i missed that....dont remember it. oh yeah and i remember when they showed the surgery when they were taking out the guys stomach, it was right before lunch (it was in school). im just glad it wasnt right AFTER lunch :P well thats all i have to say.....wow i wasnt very helpful, was i? sorry

oh yeah and when he puked out of the car window after ONE meal, i think one of his first...cause it was supersized. yeah that was cool

George Washington or Abraham Lincold aren't on happy meal bags. Kids are into toys and junk food, not politics.

Also that documentary is propoganda, taken too seriously, and over rated.

Also everything is relative to motabolism. No, most fat middle aged men can't handle macdonalds three times a day.

I think everyone has the ability to be healthy, even if as you stated before, they ate fast food as much as once a week. It all depends on your EVERYDAY eating habit .... if there's no health in there and no excercise, it doesn't matter what you eat... the same thing is going to happen, because you're body isn't getting its proper nourishment.

On top of that, the thing about the kids..."Ronald McDonald" and "Wendy" are things that kids DESIRE. They want to know of them, they enjoy them. I don't recall or can't name any kids that enjoy George Washington, or Abe L. ...When they come out with Fries and Burgers I'm sure they'll be all over it, until then, the popular, is going to outweigh the intelligent.

While that film explained a lot about why fast food is bad for us, it is everyones individual choice on how they choose to live, and how they are happy with themselves, and their health. No one can control it but that person alone. Who are we to say it's wrong, or even bad?

I say that biography was made under very false assumption, while it had it's good points, and it's good values, no one eats like that everyday, the American income alone, doesn't allow it. It was a fake setup...to demonstrate what could occur, but let's be realistic, that'll never happen. Eat fast food occasionally, but eat healthy around it, and stay active...you'll be fine.

I mainly mentioned the Washington, Lincoln thing because I thought most kids knew who they were. It just really shocked me.

I thought it was really crappy how all of it ultimately got blamed on the fast food resturants, if your child knows RM and Wendy...but not GW and AL...then that to me is simply bad parenting, don't shove it on MickeyD's because your kid is a fat ass with little education.

Maybe it was just a rumor...but I heard something about Morgan Spurlok(sp?) dying a few months after the filming of Super Size Me.

If it's true, that shows how bad fast food really is.

i don't think this documentary was quite as convincing as it could have been, because it throws realism out the window. When I first read The Jungle in middle school, it made me realize just exactly what was going into my meals. This book, to me, had a much bigger impact than a movie about a guy who binge eats fast food for a month. Although it did get across the point that fast food is bad, I don't feel it did much more than that. The recent story about Wendy's, the finger in the chili, repels me away from fast food much more than this documentary.

And on the topic of recognizing historical figures: the same result would have occured with a picture of Mickey Mouse or even a Pikachu. I find it funny that no one seems to care that 50+ year old seniors would not recognize Charizard or Mario. Does anyone ever see the flip side of things?

No, he didnt die. He has just been producing a new TV series that is coming out soon called "30 days."

No, eating fast food once a week wont kill you...unless your food happens to be poisoned. The reason Morgan Spurlock became so sick was because he was eating only McDonald's.

I would not do this experiment, even without knowing the outcome, because I dont like McDonald's food (except for their fries and McNuggets). In fact, I dont even like hamburgers all that much either.

All Morgan Spurlock did was point out the obvious while at the same time becoming very rich and famous. I'm more shocked at the fact that such information actually surprises people.

It isnt like America is the only country with fast food. So why is America fat? Because America is the only country where they serve such huge portions (as pointed out in the movie). Also, America is the only country where you dont even have to leave your car to get food. You wont find drive-thrus in Europe, or anywhere else.

I also think the concept of refills is American only.

That dumb lady who supposedly found the finger in her chili is known for sueing schools and other restraunts for money...
What a pathetic woman... and what a wonderful role model she is for her kids...
Yup, this all happened about 5 miles from where I live...
Back on topic, Supersize Me was a dumb movie that was only made to point out the obvious and to get rich...

Yes. I visited three places in the US last summer. Las Vegas, San Jose, and LA. I was extremely shocked to find out that not only are the cup sizes ridiculously HUGE. But when you order a drink, they give you the cup and you fill it up yourself, not only that but you get unlimited refills. I live in a slightly smaller than average Canadian-size city. Like all other cities, streets are filled with Burger Kings, McDonalds, KFC, Wendy's etc... Guess what, out of all of the ones I've ever been to in my LIFE, only one of them has the whole 'unlimited refills' concept. (It was KFC if anyone was wondering..)

Jewpin, remember, we still have people sueing McDonalds because they got fat. Of course, that type of person should be released into the wild, so that they can learn how good they really had it. And of course, since in the wild it would be "survival of the fittest", they would most likely die within a month, if not faster. Of course, who wants those genes in the gene pool?

It's funny. My friends and I were hosting Japanese foreign exchange students , and it was our duty to show them what america was all about...so we took them to Super Wal-Mart. To start, they were in awe of the size of the building (which, I do have to admit, is freaking gigantic). After they got over the size of the store, they went to go check out the snacks were they compared the "average" size bags to chips as being "bigger than their heads." After that, we kind of lost site of them....10 minutes of searching, we found them in the fresh Deli section of Wal-Mart where they bought popcorn chicken. As a joke, I handed them a 3 foot long sub sandwich and asked them if they were hungry. All four of them (Mari, Yukari, Nozomi, and Chie) then proceeded to scream in terror at the sheer size of the sandwich. I even think Chie started to cry.

Towards the end of their homestay, Yukari kept saying how fat she felt.

Man...I miss them so much.

Pssh. I have 3-5 "Fast Food" meals a week and I'm fine.

You just have to have a balance between that food and actually moving around afterwards. I walk about a mile and a half every day, so it balances out.

Though, I can lose weight just by sitting in my room somehow. Go me.

We had to do speeches for french class a while back. One girl did a speech about the fast food industry. Apparently up to what she researched, it would take 6 hours of constant running to burn off the calories you take in when eating a Big Mac.

I doubt that is exactly true, but you have to remember that you are already burning calories, and then there are the extra calories you burn from running, and so you have to look at which calories you are counting.
