They aren't as offensive anymore BECAUSE people use them so much now. They were supposed to be offensive, but people abused them so much because it was 'cool' to be offensive. Now people are trying to find new ways to offend. Some of us just don't care to jump down the drain with the rest of society.

Maybe so, but even if you look at it from a statistical standpoint, you will get more members, and keep more members with the censoring.

******. <-Nope, it's censored, *****. <-That one's not though.

I think the swear filter is kind of pointless. We can get around it. Plus this site is 13 and up. I agree with how Synth wants the site, but the filter is just annoying. It reinforces the negative uses of swearing because it's filtered.

My view on cursing is in the cursing topic, so I'll refrain from repeating myself.

I would imagine that Synthlight, being a parent and all, is very much for offering a sort of protection from foul language for the younger generation.

If anything, the swear filter should force us to come up with more creative ways to express ourselves. I'd be lying if I said I didn't swear, but I'm also aware of how unintelligent using such language makes me sound. Not swearing just makes a person much more respectable or credible. On my rowing team, if a rower swears, her entire boat is supposed to do fifty pushups for each dirty word. If a coxswain swears, her boat must do one hundred pushups for each dirty word (this is because the coxswain has a microphone and can be heard much more easily by others outside of the boat). I wish this rule was enforced more, because the stroke-lady in my boats has a terribly foul mouth, and I only recently realized how embarrassed she can make me. When we stayed at a Methodist Boys Ranch for spring training, we constantly had to remind her to watch her mouth in the presence of our hosts, and this weekend at our regatta, I was sad that in front of all those famous crews, she could not think of anything better to say.

Anything else I could say about this has already been said. Forgive me for being traditional.

You're not being traditional per se. It's just there are certain times and/or places where swearing is inappropiate, meaning you'll offend people, embarrass yourself, or embarrass the people around or associated with you (like your example).

I know I look stupid sometimes for swearing in table tennis. But I also make my friends laugh at it by doing it in silly ways, and I'm not serious/angry about it. I get frustrated and if I do end up get really frustrated, I kind of shut my mouth and keep quiet.

I might throw my paddle too. XD Yes, that does look stupid. At least I'm not like these one 'tards who were whipping the paddles from the front desk all over the place, smacking the table with them, and nearly hitting many people throughout the hour or so they were playing whenever they threw their paddle. It was rediculous.

So like that paddle example, swearing can vary a lot in degree and form.

Heck is the pussy version of hell
Sorry, I meant to say something better, but I didn't
Isn't that how it always works out?
Anyway, I promise not to offend the 13-18 year olds on this site, so help me GOD.
And I'll try not to use God and Jesus so much in my posts as well, as I obviously don't believe in either of them in a religious way (so the most that will happen is I'll stop capitalizing "god")
I'm not in this game of life to piss people off, though it helps sometimes.

I don't really understand why you would think of people not coming to this site as a bad thing, necessarily.
I mean, I'd rather have quality, over quantity. But it's not my forum. But then again, Synthlight wouldn't have as much fun if it weren't for rambunctious juveniles like me, and....the other idiots.

Just one more thing to say.

Honestly, I don't know why you're so desperate to curse. First of all you can get around it, and second, if you really need to curse you convey that you aren't comfortable enough with the english language to use actual words, which I know none of you are...

umm....

right?

Nah, I was talking about maybe...10 months ago? I think. Back then, it was not, though now it clearly is.

Not all of the words should be blocked. Words like "gay" and "******" are not and should not be consitered swear words.

Except they are not used in context, and instead are used a profane.

Well, yeah.
You can't just say swear words aren't swear words.
I know what I'm saying, but I don't mean it to be obscene.
Just different. I don't euphemisms for words, unless they have a value al of their own.
Like, I'd say, what the "heck", if I were trying to use it after being fake upset about something.
Ex:"Oh, this new mode in FFR is bullpoo. Gee wilikers everyone, I mean, what the heck?"
Other than cases like that I'm going for hell all the way.

and in no way do I ever use words that shouldn't be used out of context as insults. I'm against racial, and other kinds of slurs as much as anyone should be.

Seriously, learn that this isn't about just you. This is about everyone.
Just cause YOU don't care what is said, doesn't mean others don't care.
We are here to satisfy as many people as possible. People don't stop going to a forum because there are filters. Some DO stop going to forums because there AREN'T filters though.

ok ok your right. Plus I was beating hypocritical anyway. I don't like it when people cuss in person. I just don't mind as much in text for some reason. My dad always says cursing is just the sign of a weak mind desprately trying to express itself. I tend to agree.

Well, that's just their opinion Moogy. I believe that the people that leave forums because there aren't enough filters, should probably find another forum or not even use forums, as people do have different opinions, and will express them differently. I mean, they are just words. I know I don't have to use them, and sometimes it's really inappropriate and I don't. Simple, but it's what I choose to do.
