Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway. I understand that theoretically you could park on a parkway, and dive on your driveway, but why are they opposite. Also why is matterial in a ship called cargo, and in a car called shipment

We drive on parkways because some random guy wanted to name it that.
We park on driveways because some random guy wanted to name it that. 'Cargo' is not a term used only for boats. It's for planes, trains, and cars. Irrelevant. 'Shipment' is anything being taken from one place to another. It doesn't have to be in a car. Sorry, not a critical thinking caliber thread. ~Squeek |

Actually, although it doesn't really belong here, it is a valid question that I intend to answer.
Assuming I know the answer. I remember that driveways were initially "drive aways", which is what you would use to "drive away" on. But then again, you also return on a driveway, so that name is awkward too. Q |

Ok, sorry my question was too dumb for you guys, i didn't mean to insult your intelligence, it was just a question i was wondering, and still i have no answer other then i was made up by some random guy, which is no help to me, and the cargo thing was just another example of what i was asking. Just trying to figure out some origins og words we use today.

Look it up in an etymology book. There's another book I love called A Bird in the Hand that does lots of this.
Please, don't post anything other than critical thinking in this forum. It's just a policy that was made by some random guy( sorry Synth and staff). I follow it, though, because it has made this place enjoyable. |
