Well, I was officially registered and accepted like 8 months ago for our local college (not techincally a community college anymore since they do 4 year degrees as well now). First semester is virtually over for me, just have two more finals this Tuesday and then yaychristmas

Already? Lol, I'm almost 22.
But I've thought about a few places so far. The easiest thing to do would be to continue at the university I'm already at, Cal Poly - SLO. I have a feeling that's what I'll end up doing. I've been looking at maybe the University of Michigan, which has an incredible aerospace program or Virginia Tech. Both are great schools. The hardest part isn't deciding where to go...it's what the **** to study. |

I decided not to go for grad school though because I simply don't think I need to. I did have the option to submatriculate for an additional MS or MBA, but I didn't see the point (my undergrad business degree is literally derived from the same classes our MBA students take anyway, only harder).
I paid/worked my way through undergrad, and so I can attest to how stressful it can be to not have that financial cushion from parents. Taking on grad school is just another cluster**** I don't want to deal with, haha. |

Is it possible to just start working right out of a 4 year degree and then work your way up over 4 years to the same point that you would get to by paying for 4 more years of grad school?
It seems like to me the only difference is you will be way more in debt by going to grad school instead of already making a salary and learning from on the job training.

I only intend to go to grad school for two years to get my Masters. I don't want a PhD.
Not having to go through admissions, knowing all of the faculty that are on campus and already having a place to live are really big reasons why I'm thinking about just staying where I am. The benefit of two more years of university for me are worth it, imo. A Bachelors of Science in aerospace engineering pays anywhere from $50,000-$60,000 a year out of college if you get a job. Having a Masters is another $10,000 tacked on to your salary amount guarantee, could result in more, who knows. I've been thinking about it for awhile and I'd rather continue school than stop school, work for a bit, and then go back to school. I don't want to disrupt my rhythm. And no, my parents do not pay for any part of my education whatsoever. Don't want to hear that from anyone. |

My Masters will cost me roughly $40,000 in associated costs for a return of $10,000+ a year once I get a job. It will shortly pay for itself.

Yeah, I'm really thankful to be going to a state school in this case. Undergrad aerospace engineering here is just about second to none, as far as I know. Maybe bested by Embry-Riddle or some place like that that completely specializes in aero, but for the price, it's a great deal.
Were I going to a school that was twice as expensive like you did, then I'd definitely be having second thoughts about grad school too. Failure rates in this program are above 50% too (I think my class of 2006 started with 130 kids and we have about 55 left), so if you can make it, you're one of few. I don't know anyone with an aero degree who doesn't have a job, haha. If they don't, it's out of shear laziness. Last edited by foilman8805; 12-11-2009 at 07:30 PM.. |

Yeah, definitely. Again, it all depends on your situation and career goal. For some, grad school is a great option. For others like me, it may just be a needless additional cost with limited upside.

I'm actually lovin the hell out of my first year of college. It's so much less restrictive than prep school holy **** I can finally go outside past ten. ~_~ Admittedly, my parents/grandparents are funding all of it, so I'm currently in kind of a guilt trip over being really lazy and wasting money. One way I've managed to improve is calculating the average cost of each class you skip. I haven't missed one since I did. It's pretty scary. |

And yeah, each class is quite expensive. But you're really paying for a lot more than just class, which is why it's priced so high. |

I got rejected by four colleges and accepted by another four.
Went to one of them and now I'm paying $55,000 a year without getting a single dime as scholarship. |
