You're all being silly.
The US hates the French because of Rene Dupree.

nuff said, also , i dont think any of us here have history majors, and most of you by looking at your posts are just regurgitating what little preconceptions you have about what really happened anyways. so i say we let this thread die a natural death. its the honorable thing to do.

I stopped reading once the ignorant comments started half way down the second page, so I'm sorry if I rehash any arguments.
The French-US relationship dates back to the Revolutionary war. The French navy fought with the Americans, and were influential in the victory. George Washington on the other hand, won only a single battle (Gore Vidal is my source on Washington, I'm not 100% sure if it's true). Lets skip ahead to the war of 1812. The United States battled both french, english and native forces and lost. Again, the french had been influential in the decision of an american war. During WW1, millions of people died from over a dozen countries. The Americans were also involved in the conflict. It began in and America joined April 2, 1917 after a supply ships sent to britain were attacked by german u-boats. The war began in 1914. Millions had died on both sides by that time, and the United States military was at full strength. They lost 126,000 soldiers, and no civilians. The French lost 1,375,800 soldiers, and 690,000 of their wounded were permanently disabled. 16.36% of French soldiers died, and over 50% were injured. 2.89% of American soldiers died, and 5.38% were injured. The French fought a long war and surrendered when half of their military had been defeated. (Source: www.worldwar1.com) The American's backed out of the Treaty of Versailles and refused to join the League of Nations. This treaty was meant to ensure Germany remained disarmed, and without the backing of a strong military power (Europes militaries were decimated after the war), Hitler was able to amass one of the greatest armies in modern history. (Of course, Hitler may have never risen to power were it not for the treaty of Versailles in the first place). In 1936, Facist Gen. Francisco Franco overthrows the democratically elected Spainish government, and the Spainish civil war begins. The world does nothing to protect democracy. Also in 1936, Mussolini invades Ethiopia, nothing is done. In 1938, Hitler began to murder Austria's jewish population, the world does nothing again. In 1939, the German army invades Czechoslovakia. The world finally responds to the threat of facism. Almost 3 years later, the US joins the Allies after Pearl Harbour is attacked by the Japanese. The French, already officially defeated at this point, have a resistance that numbers around 100,000, not including non-government forces in Africa fighting the axis. 30th April, 1945, hitler commits suicide. 5 months later, WW2 ends, and the US and the USSR are established as the world's superpowers. France and Britain, the worlds strongest imperial powers before the war are crushed and beaten. The USSR expands without opposition from democratic nations, and the cold war begins. And americans get treated like crap in europe because europeans think they are arrogant and obnxious. To all canadians, wear a canadian flag on you at all times to save yourself hatred reserved for americans. |

My point that there is no real reason for the US and French to hate each other. Losing half of your military in a war would knock anybody down. Even the nazis didn't lose that many and they lost the war. The didn't retreat while helping to create America. You should have a little more respect instead of being a judgemental bigot is all I'm saying. That, and the US didn't save everybodys asses in world war 1. |

Honestly, I don't care either way about the French. They don't bother me a bit. Letting...public opinion, as it is, nudge you into disliking an entire nation is ignorance of the highest order. I don't blame them for not helping us in Iraq, hell we had no business over there anyway, aside from Daddy Bush's unfinished business. So, French, be happy; at least one American doesn't give a shit either way.
Edit, I need to check more often to see if there's more than one page for these things. |

I once asked why we hate them so much...
I kid you not, my dear buddy told me it was because of the South Park movie. In retrospect, after watching the movie with him... I agreed. That movie is funny and makes fun of the canadians A LOT. I myself harbor no hate against them. I have taken french in school for 11 years and counting. |

The French are elitists.
Americans are elitists too. They clash. But who can stay mad at the french after they hear "Around the World" by Daft Punk? No one. And if you stay mad, it isnt france's fault, it is your own fault for questioning your sexuality too much because you are listening to Daft Punk. |

People say America because when we refer to the citizens of The United States of America, it's easier to say "americans" than the citizens of the United States of America. And you'd think americans would be living in a country called America, wouldn't you? Don't have a tantrum.

We Americans use the exuse of the fact that the French government refused to help us in the war to hate the French people.
Then, we go and boycott all products that sound French, including American ones. Do you know how many American products use French words to make them sound more fancy? We hurt our own economy, and hurt the American dollar. We target the people with French heritage, discriminating against them for what another country did across a whole ocean. These people, and even the vast majority of the French did not have anything to do with the decision. We then miss out on their culture. And otherwise, we have thousands upon thousands of Americans who are not French, hollering "PEACE!!" and refusing to support the decision this country has made, therefore dividing the nation, lowering the morale of our troops, and making this whole deal last so much longer. hmm... |

Some people have no respect for the culture of others.
And you know, just as the U.S. was only partly justified for the war in Iraq, France was only partially justified for refusing. France can hide behind the whole "peace" deal, but Iraq and had itself deeply entrenched in the French economy. And perhaps there were some under-the-table deals as well. |
