Computer help
I found a computer in my garage with no hard drive and I was wondering if I could just put my hard drive into that one with no problems

Re: Computer help
The short answer is yes. The long answer is no, not if you didn't know that you could.

Re: Computer help
Probably not. If you "just found it" in your garage, it's probably very old and incompatible with the computer you have now.

Re: Computer help
Then you can probably do it without any issues. Just back stuff up just in case?

Re: Computer help
There is probably a pretty high chance that both computers are using eide harddrives. Depending on how new his current computer is it could possibly be SATA, but I'm guessing for EIDE.
Motherboards with SATA connections always have an EIDE connection too. But, an older motherboard with EIDE won't have SATa. |

Re: Computer help
Do newer laptops carry the same compatibility between SATA and IDE drives? I know if you have XP, you sometimes have to install (or slipstream) third party drivers. The reason I ask is because I have an older hard drive that still works well, but it's from an older Dell Inspiron and my Compaq Presario CQ60 has a dead HD. That was my FFR computer, too -- trashed the hell out of this game with that laptop keyboard and I'd do a lot to get it working without having to pay money for a brand new HD.
Slipstreaming drivers onto a CD with a new HD looks like my best bet, though. |

Re: Computer help
Pull on the vinyl loop that's attached to the cable, it's what it's there for.
There shouldn't be any clips on pata drives, just pull harder. |

Also if your computer is hooked up with one of these it's SATA: If your computer is PATA (IDE) It'll be connected with one of these: PATA is the older one, that all computers are comparable with, and SATA only works with newerish computers. I'm going to assume because you have to pull hard it's PATA and will work on anything. |

Re: Computer help
This isn't true. The last (Intel) platforms to support IDE were P55 and X58, the new H67 and P67 (EDIT: H61, Z68, LGA 1155 in general I guess. Didn't realize there were so many chipsets for that platform) boards don't have IDE on them (Unless a third party chipset is put on the board). I'm willing to bet that we're done with IDE on motherboards now.
