CISPA just got passed
You remember this post from 3 years ago? It drummed up a lot of attention on the internet, and even caused a blackout in protest for a couple of days.

Practically your only hope now is that President Obama veto's it, or some other miracle happens. I'm not too well versed on American Politics, so I haven't a clue what 'other miracles' could count for. Last edited by gold stinger; 10-27-2015 at 10:20 PM.. |

Now we're gonna have to paytoplay their game.
This is seriously depressing, at least if you do remember the controversy. Plus I think we can all agree the government has it's fingers in too much already. |

Re: CISPA just got passed
Correct me if I'm wrong with American Politics, but it has to be sent to a conference committee for last minute changes/adjustments, as well as writing it out, and from there, it gets sent to the President's desk, where he can choose to veto it, or sign it.
Not sure what type of underlying power of authority in the law system this 'conference committee' sits at, but if it can be sent back to senate that would be great but I highly doubt it. Many news sources are saying that the last chance of anything happening to it, is whether or not the president you elected will sign it or not. Last edited by gold stinger; 10-27-2015 at 10:32 PM.. |

I believe it still has to pass the House before it gets sent to the President, but that's not a great hope either.

It hurts just as much to move to Canada because if information passes into the United States for any reason, the government can collect it in the same fashion, and the information on the internet has to travel in that direction a lot because of powerhouses like google (youtube, unless getting it from their offices in Toronto/Kitchener, but the closest data centre is in USA), amazon (twitch), facebook, reddit, and imgur.

Re: CISPA just got passed
Bill still needs to pass in the House (assuming it hasn't already), then a conference committee irons out any differences between the bills accepted, as a bill has to pass identically in both houses. Any idea what the vote was (for and against numbers)? If president vetoes it then the bill needs 2/3 of the house and 2/3 of senate to vote for it.

Re: CISPA just got passed
even so that's nearly 75% voting for, it looks pretty bad. too bad the majority of the people in the senate don't actually represent their people's interests

Re: CISPA just got passed
What about the HoR? If it's like the senate then it won't even matter if Obama vetoes it. The senate already has 2/3 majority

Re: CISPA just got passed
The House hasn't voted for the current version of the bill, but the previous two versions both passed in the House (and they were the ones who reintroduced a similar version of this one) so it likely will pass there also.
Though this was kinda expected since the far right has majority control in both the Senate and the House for the time being. Last edited by tosh; 10-28-2015 at 10:05 AM.. |

Don't worry boys, Donald Trump 2016 will repeal this unjust law!
This is the classic privacy vs. protection trade off. Looks like protection is winning. -o24

Re: CISPA just got passed
Anyone ever read the book 1984 by George Orwell?
It was a good book, if only I wasn't forced to read it in English class. In all honesty though, Ayase is correct. If you actually read the fine lines of CISA, CISA is granted exceptions and immunity against both the Electronic Communication Privacy Act of 1986 and the Privacy Act of 1974, and creates a possible grey area within the 4th amendment that allows it to be exploited for government purposes. It's not like it won't increase protection at all though, ditching your 4th amendment for bulk collection from government agencies will most likely do something, such as catching people who torrent without a vpn, or find sources to threatening content easier, but it will do nothing against foreign entities that plan out actual cyberterrorism attacks, whom can just adjust how they do it on a moment's notice. This doesn't stop people from leaking info from big name government corporations like NSA & homeland security, and it doesn't stop foreign hackers from attacking companies & leaking password lists. This is really, really sad, when I know more about United States government & law than Canadian government & law. Last edited by gold stinger; 10-28-2015 at 12:44 PM.. |

Re: CISPA just got passed
If I am correct, I believe all this started because the music industry was breathing down the necks of the govt for profit loss. They used to make their bulk of income off album sales, now they're lucky to get 99cents a song.
So they pushed for these anti-piracy acts, which like AA said are only going to limit us. Look at gun control, they don't find safer ways to operate or sell them, they simply limit them. Look at education, the national standard fails and instead of breaking it down they dumb it down, water it down, and they simplified it with Common Core. It's kinda the base for bipartisanhip too. |

But honestly that's how it's been in America since 9/11. People have been forced to lose more and more of their freedoms in the name of "protecting the people". Honestly all politicians are like this. The Senate is 54-44-2 (Republicans/Democrats/Independents) so it's not like this issue is limited to one party, especially considering that the vote had 74 backers in senate alone. |
